Massive pericardial effusion caused by hypothyroidism.
Although mild pericardial effusion is a usual finding in patients with hypothyroidism, massive pericardial effusion or pericardial tamponade is rare and customarily related to severe hypothyroidism. Non-Fermi liquid signatures in the Hubbard Model due to van Hove singularities
When a van-Hove singularity is located in the vicinity of the Fermi level,
the electronic scattering rate acquires a non-analytic contribution. This
invalidates basic assumptions of Fermi liquid theory and within perturbative
treatments leads to a non-Fermi liquid self-energy and transport
properties.Such anomalies are shown to also occur in the strongly correlated
metallic state. We consider the Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square
lattice with nearest and next-nearest neighbor hopping within the single-site
dynamical mean-field theory. At temperatures on the order of the low-energy
scale an unusual maximum emerges in the imaginary part of the self-energy
which is renormalized towards the Fermi level for finite doping. At zero
temperature this double-well structure is suppressed, but an anomalous energy
dependence of the self-energy remains. For the frustrated Hubbard model on the
square lattice with next-nearest neighbor hopping, the presence of the van Hove
singularity changes the asymptotic low temperature behavior of the resistivity
from a Fermi liquid to non-Fermi liquid dependency as function of doping. The
results of this work are discussed regarding their relevance for

The initial temporal evolution of a feedback dynamo for Mercury
Various possibilities are currently under discussion to explain the observed
weakness of the intrinsic magnetic field of planet Mercury. One of the possible
dynamo scenarios is a dynamo with feedback from the magnetosphere. Due to its
weak magnetic field Mercury exhibits a small magnetosphere whose subsolar
magnetopause distance is only about 1.7 Hermean radii. We consider the magnetic
field due to magnetopause currents in the dynamo region. Since the external
field of magnetospheric origin is antiparallel to the dipole component of the
dynamo field, a negative feedback results. For an alpha-omega-dynamo two
stationary solutions of such a feedback dynamo emerge, one with a weak and the
other with a strong magnetic field. The question, however, is how these
solutions can be realized. To address this problem, we discuss various
scenarios for a simple dynamo model and the conditions under which a steady
weak magnetic field can be reached. We find that the feedback mechanism
quenches the overall field to a low value of about 100 to 150 nT if the dynamo
is not driven too strongly
Intensity Thresholds and the Statistics of the Temporal Occurrence of Solar Flares
Introducing thresholds to analyze time series of emission from the Sun
enables a new and simple definition of solar flare events, and their
interoccurrence times. Rescaling time by the rate of events, the waiting and
quiet time distributions both conform to scaling functions that are independent
of the intensity threshold over a wide range. The scaling functions are well
described by a two parameter function, with parameters that depend on the phase
of the solar cycle. For flares identified according to the current, standard

Bulk, rare earth and other trace elements in Apollo 14 and 15 and Luna 16 samples
The chemical abundances were measured by instrumental and radiochemical neutron activation analysis in a variety of lunar specimens. Apollo 14 soils are characterized by significant enrichments of Al2O3, Na2O and K2O and depletions of TiO2, FeO, MnO and Cr2O3 relative to Apollo 11 and to most of Apollo 12 soils. The uniform abundances in 14230 core tube soils and three other Apollo 14 soils indicate that the regolith is uniform to at least 22 cm depth and within approximately 200 m from the lunar module. Two Luna 16 breccias are similar in composition to Luna 16 soils. Four Apollo 15 soils (LM, STA 4, 9, and 9a) have variable compositions. Interelement correlations between MnO-FeO, Sc-FeO, V-Cr2O3 and K2O-Hf negate the hypothesis that howardite achondrites may be primitive lunar matter, argue against the fission hypothesis for the origin of the moon, and precludes any selective large scale volatilization of alkalies during lunar magmatic events
High-gain weakly nonlinear flux-modulated Josephson parametric amplifier using a SQUID-array
We have developed and measured a high-gain quantum-limited microwave
parametric amplifier based on a superconducting lumped LC resonator with the
inductor L including an array of 8 superconducting quantum interference devices
(SQUIDs). This amplifier is parametrically pumped by modulating the flux
threading the SQUIDs at twice the resonator frequency. Around 5 GHz, a maximum
gain of 31 dB, a product amplitude-gain x bandwidth above 60 MHz, and a 1 dB
compression point of -123 dBm at 20 dB gain are obtained in the non-degenerate
mode of operation. Phase sensitive amplification-deamplification is also
measured in the degenerate mode and yields a maximum gain of 37 dB. The
compression point obtained is 18 dB above what would be obtained with a single
SQUID of the same inductance, due to the smaller nonlinearity of the SQUID

Analysis of the spectral function of Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4, obtained by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy
Samples of Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4), an electron-doped high temperature
superconducting cuprate (HTSC), near optimal doping at x = 0.155 were measured
via angle resolved photoemission (ARPES). We report a renormalization feature
in the self energy ("kink") in the band dispersion at 50 - 60 meV present in
nodal and antinodal cuts across the Fermi surface. Specifically, while the kink
had previously only been seen in the antinodal region, it is now observed also
in the nodal region, reminiscent of what has been observed in hole-doped

Such observations must be globally
distributed and carried out over long
time periods. But a means of obtaining
those observations—particularly in
the ocean—is not in place today. There
is no global system of routinely funded,
long-term, high-quality measurements
to provide the necessary understanding
of climate in general and the ocean
in particular. The scientific literature
is full of examples of tantalizing short
records that do not illuminate the physical
problems. Long-term biological
measurements are in an even more limited
state of development. With society
demanding better forecasts, and the need
to quantify the human role in climate
change, it is more important than ever
that we find ways to establish the necessary
institutional basis for and achieve
the proper levels of funding for long-term
measurements
An algorithm for correcting CoRoT raw light curves
We introduce the CoRoT detrend algorithm (CDA) for detrending CoRoT stellar
light curves. The algorithm CDA has the capability to remove random jumps and
systematic trends encountered in typical CoRoT data in a fully automatic
fashion. Since enormous jumps in flux can destroy the information content of a
light curve, such an algorithm is essential. From a study of 1030 light curves
in the CoRoT IRa01 field, we developed three simple assumptions which upon CDA
is based. We describe the algorithm analytically and provide some examples of
how it works. We demonstrate the functionality of the algorithm in the cases of
CoRoT0102702789, CoRoT0102874481, CoRoT0102741994, and CoRoT0102729260. Using
CDA in the specific case of CoRoT0102729260, we detect a candidate exoplanet
around the host star of spectral type G5, which remains undetected in the raw
light curve, and estimate the planetary parameters to be Rp=6.27Re and P=1.6986

Topological energy barrier for skyrmion lattice formation in MnSi
We report the direct measurement of the topological skyrmion energy barrier
through a hysteresis of the skyrmion lattice in the chiral magnet MnSi.
Measurements were made using small-angle neutron scattering with a custom-built
resistive coil to allow for high-precision minor hysteresis loops. The
experimental data was analyzed using an adapted Preisach model to quantify the
energy barrier for skyrmion formation and corroborated by the minimum-energy
path analysis based on atomistic spin simulations. We reveal that the skyrmion
lattice in MnSi forms from the conical phase progressively in small domains,
each of which consisting of hundreds of skyrmions, and with an activation
