A significant increase in grain yield was observed following soil fertilization with nitrogen up to the level of 90 kg·ha-1, independently of foliar fertilization. Among the examined variants of foliar fertilization on average, the significantly highest grain yield was obtained in the objects in which nitrogen and magnesium were administered in parallel. Within the entire range of nitrogen doses administered to soil, a moderately significant increase was noted in total protein content, to the level of 90 kg N·ha-1 a moderately increased content of wet gluten, sedimentation ratio and bread volume were recorded and following application of 60 kg N·ha-1 an increase in water absorbability of flour was observed. Independently of the soil fertilization with nitrogen, the most favourable of the studied variants of foliar fertilization for principal parameters of baking value proved to be a parallel application of nitrogen and magnesium or administration of nitrogen only.Istotny wzrost plonu ziarna stwierdzono po zastosowaniu doglebowo dawki azotu do poziomu 90 kg·ha-1, niezależnie od nawożenia dolistnego. Spośród badanych wariantów nawożenia dolistnego średnio istotnie najwyższy plon ziarna uzyskano na obiektach, gdzie zastosowano łącznie azot i magnez. Stwierdzono, w całym zakresie zastosowanych doglebowo dawek azotu, średnio istotny wzrost zawartości białka ogólnego, do poziomu 90 kg N·ha-1 średnio istotny wzrost zawartości mokrego glutenu, wskaźnika sedymentacji i objętości pieczywa, a po zastosowaniu 60 kg N·ha- 1 wodochłonności mąki.

Study of Convective Heat Transfer in Grinding Applied to Tool Carbide

The grinding temperature is of great importance for the quality and integrity of machined cemented carbide tool. Tool edge surfaces may be damaged by softening or being stressed, hardened, burned, or cracked. Former research on grinding temperature prediction often made assumptions to simplify heat convection due to the grinding fluid. However, these simplifying assumptions can sometimes undermine the mathematical relationships between grinding conditions and surface temperature, particularly in low-temperature grinding where fluid convection is most important. This paper is an attempt to provide an improved comprehensive thermal model for the prediction of contact temperatures and for monitoring and control of thermal damage. Based on previous thermal model research, this paper tackles a key element of the thermal model for temperature prediction. It proposes a convective heat transfer model based on the classic theory of turbulent flow passing a plate. Theoretical predictions from the thermal model of turbulent flow developed in this paper are compared with experimental values. Predictions are further compared with values from a previously published laminar flow model. And it is shown that the new model leads to a significant reduction in predicted temperatures. The results suggest that the thermal model for the turbulent flow provides a reasonable estimate of predicted temperature values within the region of the fluid boiling temperature. The estimates appear to be an improvement compared with the laminar flow thermal model. The turbulent flow thermal model is considered to improve estimates of background contact temperatures in grinding cemented carbide

Abscisic Acid Insensitive 4 transcription factor is an important player in the response of Arabidopsis thaliana to two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) feeding.

Plants growing in constantly changeable environmental conditions are compelled to evolve regulatory mechanisms to cope with biotic and abiotic stresses. Effective defence to invaders is largely connected with phytohormone regulation, resulting in the production of numerous defensive proteins and specialized metabolites. In our work, we elucidated the role of the Abscisic Acid Insensitive 4 (ABI4) transcription factor in the plant response to the two-spotted spider mite (TSSM). This polyphagous mite is one of the most destructive herbivores, which sucks mesophyll cells of numerous crop and wild plants. Compared to the wild-type (Col-0) Arabidopsis thaliana plants, the abi4 mutant demonstrated increased susceptibility to TSSM, reflected as enhanced female fecundity and greater frequency of mite leaf damage after trypan blue staining. Because ABI4 is regarded as an important player in the plastid-to-nucleus retrograde signalling process, we investigated the plastid envelope membrane dynamics using stroma-associated fluorescent marker. Our results indicated a clear increase in the number of stroma-filled tubular structures deriving from the plastid membrane (stromules) in the close proximity of the site of mite leaf damage, highlighting the importance of chloroplast-derived signals in the response to TSSM feeding activity

Exploring the key drivers behind the adoption of mobile banking services

This research examines the main drivers behind the adoption of mobile banking, a concept that has revolutionized the day-to-day activities of humans. A review of relevant literature on the topic, leads us toward testing the following key hypotheses: consumers are adopting mobile banking due to the perceived usefulness and benefits associated with the concept; and consumers are adopting mobile banking due to technological advances meaning increased access to the mobile phone devices. We published an online questionnaire on Amazon Mechanical Turk to obtain responses from Internet users. A dominating proportion of participants highlighted how mobile banking is a concept that they adopted between three and 5 years ago, showing just how recently mobile banking took off. The results also showed a number of links between the study’s research hypotheses and the adoption of mobile banking. The overall result of the study shows online banking as a concept that is influenced by a number of both internal and external factors. No single factor plays a dominating force in pushing retail bankers to adopt mobile banking, with it instead being a culmination of numerous different factors. The recent introduction of mobile banking is made seemingly apparent, as is the increasing susceptibility to change in the near future. Subsequently, countless opportunities for further academic research are likely to arise

Assessing the information desire of patients with advanced cancer by providing information with a decision aid, which is evaluated in a randomized trial: a study protocol

Contains fulltext : 95653.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)BACKGROUND: There is a continuing debate on the desirability of informing patients with cancer and thereby involving them in treatment decisions. On the one hand, information uptake may be hampered, and additional stress could be inflicted by involving these patients. On the other hand, even patients with advanced cancer desire information on risks and prognosis. To settle the debate, a decision aid will be developed and presented to patients with advanced disease at the point of decision making. The aid is used to assess the amount of information desired. Factors related to information desire are explored, as well as the ability of the medical oncologist to judge the patient's information desire. The effects of the information on patient well-being are assessed by comparing the decision aid group with a usual care group. METHODS/DESIGN: This study is a randomized controlled trial of patients with advanced colorectal, breast, or ovarian cancer who have started treatment with first-line palliative chemotherapy. The trial will consist of 100 patients in the decision aid group and 70 patients in the usual care group. To collect complete data of 170 patients, 246 patients will be approached for the study. Patients will complete a baseline questionnaire on sociodemographic data, well-being measures, and psychological measures, believed to predict information desire. The medical oncologist will judge the patient's information desire. After disease progression is diagnosed, the medical oncologist offers the choice between second-line palliative chemotherapy plus best supportive care (BSC) and BSC alone. Randomization will take place to determine whether patients will receive usual care (n = 70) or usual care and the decision aid (n = 100). The aid offers information about the potential risks and benefits of both treatment options, in terms of adverse events, tumour response, and survival. Patients decide for each item whether they desire the information or not. Two follow-up questionnaires will evaluate the effect of the decision aid. DISCUSSION: This study attempts to settle the debate on the desirability of informing patients with cancer. In contrast to several earlier studies, we will actually deliver information on treatment options to patients at the point of decision making

Cross-platform comparability of microarray technology: Intra-platform consistency and appropriate data analysis procedures are essential

BACKGROUND: The acceptance of microarray technology in regulatory decision-making is being challenged by the existence of various platforms and data analysis methods. A recent report (E. Marshall, Science, 306, 630–631, 2004), by extensively citing the study of Tan et al. (Nucleic Acids Res., 31, 5676–5684, 2003), portrays a disturbingly negative picture of the cross-platform comparability, and, hence, the reliability of microarray technology. RESULTS: We reanalyzed Tan's dataset and found that the intra-platform consistency was low, indicating a problem in experimental procedures from which the dataset was generated. Furthermore, by using three gene selection methods (i.e., p-value ranking, fold-change ranking, and Significance Analysis of Microarrays (SAM)) on the same dataset we found that p-value ranking (the method emphasized by Tan et al.) results in much lower cross-platform concordance compared to fold-change ranking or SAM. Therefore, the low cross-platform concordance reported in Tan's study appears to be mainly due to a combination of low intra-platform consistency and a poor choice of data analysis procedures, instead of inherent technical differences among different platforms, as suggested by Tan et al. and Marshall. CONCLUSION: Our results illustrate the importance of establishing calibrated RNA samples and reference datasets to objectively assess the performance of different microarray platforms and the proficiency of individual laboratories as well as the merits of various data analysis procedures. Thus, we are progressively coordinating the MAQC project, a community-wide effort for microarray quality control

Social media and sensemaking patterns in new product development: demystifying the customer sentiment

Artificial intelligence by principle is developed to assist but also support decision making processes. In our study, we explore how information retrieved from social media can assist decision-making processes for new product development (NPD). We focus on consumers’ emotions that are expressed through social media and analyse the variations of their sentiments in all the stages of NPD. We collect data from Twitter that reveal consumers’ appreciation of aspects of the design of a newly launched model of an innovative automotive company. We adopt the sensemaking approach coupled with the use of fuzzy logic for text mining. This combinatory methodological approach enables us to retrieve consensus from the data and to explore the variations of sentiments of the customers about the product and define the polarity of these emotions for each of the NPD stages. The analysis identifies sensemaking patterns in Twitter data and explains the NPD process and the associated steps where the social interactions from customers can have an iterative role. We conclude the paper by outlining an agenda for future research in the NPD process and the role of the customer opinion through sensemaking mechanisms
