    Pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland: Report of a case with review of literature

    BACKGROUND: Pleomorphic adenomas are benign salivary gland tumors, which predominantly affect the superficial lobe of the parotid gland. The “pleomorphic” nature of the tumor can be explained on the basis of its epithelial and connective tissue origin. The tumor has a female predilection between 30-50 years of age. Slowly progressing asymptomatic swelling is the usual presentation of the tumor. Surgical excision of the tumor mass forms the mainstay of treatment, with utmost care taken to preserve the facial nerve.CASE DETAILS: This case report aims to throw light on an interesting case of pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland in a 50 years old female patient. The patient presented with a slowly progressing asymptomatic swelling on the left side of the face. There is also a special emphasis to a detailed review of literature.CONCLUSION: Salivary gland neoplasms can occur at any site where salivary tissue is present. Pleomorphic adenoma is the commonest salivary gland tumor characterized by diverse histomorphological features.     Synthesis and Characterisation of Diaryl Furoxans

    The paper discusses the synthesis, characterisation, and performance evaluation of diarylfuroxans namely, bis-phenyl-3,4-furoxan (5) and bis-(4’-nitrophenyl)-3,4-furoxan (6). Themolecules have been synthesised on the lines of reported method by cyclodimerisation of thenitrile oxides generated from benzaldoxime and p-nitro benzaldoxime, respectively. The synthesisedfuroxans (5 ) and (6) were characterised by the elemental analysis, UV, IR, and 1H NMRspectroscopy. The hazard characteristics (impact and friction sensitivity) confirm that thecompounds are safe to handle. The oxygen balance, velocity of detonation and detonationpressure have been computed. The detonation velocity and pressure along with oxygen balanceincreased with the substitution of nitro group in the benzene ring, as expected. Thethermogravimetric studies on promising compound (6) brings out that maximum weight lossoccurs at decomposition temperature of 259–260 °C

    Faster space-efficient algorithms for Subset Sum, k -Sum, and related problems

    We present randomized algorithms that solve subset sum and knapsack instances with n items in O∗ (20.86n) time, where the O∗ (∙ ) notation suppresses factors polynomial in the input size, and polynomial space, assuming random read-only access to exponentially many random bits. These results can be extended to solve binary integer programming on n variables with few constraints in a similar running time. We also show that for any constant k ≥ 2, random instances of k-Sum can be solved using O(nk -0.5polylog(n)) time and O(log n) space, without the assumption of random access to random bits.Underlying these results is an algorithm that determines whether two given lists of length n with integers bounded by a polynomial in n share a common value. Assuming random read-only access to random bits, we show that this problem can be solved using O(log n) space significantly faster than the trivial O(n2) time algorithm if no value occurs too often in the same list.</p

    Null-Space Minimization of Center of Gravity Displacementof a Redundant Aerial Manipulator

    Displacements of the base during trajectory tracking are a common issue in the control of aerial manipulators. These are caused by reaction torques transferred to the base due to the manipulator motion and, in particular, to the motion of its center of gravity. We present a novel approach to reduce base displacements of a kinematically redundant aerial manipulator by using null-space projection in the inverse kinematic control. A secondary objective function minimizes the horizontal displacement of the manipulator center of gravity. We test this algorithm on different trajectories for both three and four degrees of freedom (DOF) manipulators in a simulation environment. The results comparing our algorithm with inverse kinematic control without the null-space projection show up to an 80% reduction in the end-effector position error and an average of about 56% reduction in maximum base displacement. The simulation implementation also runs faster than in real-time in our code implementation. We provide a workspace analysis based on multiple stopping criteria such as excessive base displacement, joint velocities and end-effector position error for the 3 and 4 DOF manipulators. As expected, the 4 DOF manipulator has a larger workspace

    Random matrix ensemble with random two-body interactions in presence of a mean-field for spin one boson systems

    For mm number of bosons, carrying spin (SS=1) degree of freedom, in Ω\Omega number of single particle orbitals, each triply degenerate, we introduce and analyze embedded Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrices generated by random two-body interactions that are spin (S) scalar [BEGOE(2)-S1S1]. The embedding algebra is U(3)GG1SO(3)U(3) \supset G \supset G1 \otimes SO(3) with SO(3) generating spin SS. A method for constructing the ensembles in fixed-(mm, SS) space has been developed. Numerical calculations show that the form of the fixed-(mm, SS) density of states is close to Gaussian and level fluctuations follow GOE. Propagation formulas for the fixed-(mm, SS) space energy centroids and spectral variances are derived for a general one plus two-body Hamiltonian preserving spin. In addition to these, we also introduce two different pairing symmetry algebras in the space defined by BEGOE(2)-S1S1 and the structure of ground states is studied for each paring symmetry.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure

    Ayurvedic Management of Sthaulya (Obesity): A Case Report

    Obesity is burning health issue for society nowadays. In Sutrasthana of Charaka Samhita, in different Adhyaya (eg. Astauninditiya, Langhanabrumhaniya, Santarpaniya) causes, symptoms and treatment of Sthaulya are described. As an alternative approach, Ayurvedic treatment may serve as promising modality. A 17 years old male patient came in P.D. Patel Ayurveda Hospital on 22th May 2017. Patients weight was 114.8 kg and BMI was 37.51 which fairly included in obesity category according to NHI guidelines. He also had some associated complaints like exertional dyspnoea, increased appetite, excessive perspiration. He was treated with Snehana (Aabhyantara and Bahya), Swedana, Vamana, Virechana, Niruha Basti, Udvartana along with oral medicines like Varunaadi Kwatha, Arogyavardhini Vati, Triphala Guggulu, and Navayasa Lauha along with prescribed dietary regimes and life style modification. He lost about 9.7 kg of weight, which was 105.1 kgs and BMI was 34.34 only in 26 days without any complications

    Prevalence, pattern and perceptions of self-medication in medical students

    Background: The use of self-medication is highly prevalent in the community more so amongst the medical students. Self-medication can be defined as the use of drugs to treat self-diagnosed disorders or symptoms, or the intermittent or continued use of a prescribed drug for chronic or recurrent disease or symptoms.Aims and Objectives: To study the prevalence and pattern of use of self-medication among medical students from first year to internship.Methods: This cross sectional study was carried out among under graduate medical students including interns of Smt. NHL Municipal Medical College, Ahmedabad during the period of March 2010 to May 2010. Results: Out of 747 students and interns enrolled, 685 responded (91.7%). Out of 685 respondents 564 (82.3%) reported self-medication within one year of recall period. Most common conditions/symptoms for self-medication in students were fever (72.7%), headache (69.1%), upper respiratory tract infections (64.1%) followed by others like body-ache, abdominal pain, diarrhoea etc. Over the counter drugs (84.2%) was the most common category of drugs used by all the students except first year students who used prescription only drugs more frequently (48.5%). Herbal and Ayurvedic drugs were also used as self-medication (17.8%); most frequently by the first year students (22.7%).Conclusion: The pattern of self-medication practice changes with time and advancement of knowledge
