    MW assisted synthesis of some heterocyclic compounds and their Mannich bases under solvent free conditions and their biological assay

    A highly efficient MW assisted synthesis of different nitrogen containing heterocyclic compounds under solvent free conditions was reported. Their aminomethylation was carried out on acidic alumina under microwave irradiation to give the corresponding Mannich bases. The method is clean, fast, facile, efficient, low cost and environmentally benign. The structure of synthesized compounds has been characterized on the basis of their elemental analysis and spectral data. These compounds were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi

    Neurodevelopmental disorders in children aged 2-9 years: Population-based burden estimates across five regions in India.

    BACKGROUND: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) compromise the development and attainment of full social and economic potential at individual, family, community, and country levels. Paucity of data on NDDs slows down policy and programmatic action in most developing countries despite perceived high burden. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We assessed 3,964 children (with almost equal number of boys and girls distributed in 2-<6 and 6-9 year age categories) identified from five geographically diverse populations in India using cluster sampling technique (probability proportionate to population size). These were from the North-Central, i.e., Palwal (N = 998; all rural, 16.4% non-Hindu, 25.3% from scheduled caste/tribe [SC-ST] [these are considered underserved communities who are eligible for affirmative action]); North, i.e., Kangra (N = 997; 91.6% rural, 3.7% non-Hindu, 25.3% SC-ST); East, i.e., Dhenkanal (N = 981; 89.8% rural, 1.2% non-Hindu, 38.0% SC-ST); South, i.e., Hyderabad (N = 495; all urban, 25.7% non-Hindu, 27.3% SC-ST) and West, i.e., North Goa (N = 493; 68.0% rural, 11.4% non-Hindu, 18.5% SC-ST). All children were assessed for vision impairment (VI), epilepsy (Epi), neuromotor impairments including cerebral palsy (NMI-CP), hearing impairment (HI), speech and language disorders, autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), and intellectual disability (ID). Furthermore, 6-9-year-old children were also assessed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning disorders (LDs). We standardized sample characteristics as per Census of India 2011 to arrive at district level and all-sites-pooled estimates. Site-specific prevalence of any of seven NDDs in 2-<6 year olds ranged from 2.9% (95% CI 1.6-5.5) to 18.7% (95% CI 14.7-23.6), and for any of nine NDDs in the 6-9-year-old children, from 6.5% (95% CI 4.6-9.1) to 18.5% (95% CI 15.3-22.3). Two or more NDDs were present in 0.4% (95% CI 0.1-1.7) to 4.3% (95% CI 2.2-8.2) in the younger age category and 0.7% (95% CI 0.2-2.0) to 5.3% (95% CI 3.3-8.2) in the older age category. All-site-pooled estimates for NDDs were 9.2% (95% CI 7.5-11.2) and 13.6% (95% CI 11.3-16.2) in children of 2-<6 and 6-9 year age categories, respectively, without significant difference according to gender, rural/urban residence, or religion; almost one-fifth of these children had more than one NDD. The pooled estimates for prevalence increased by up to three percentage points when these were adjusted for national rates of stunting or low birth weight (LBW). HI, ID, speech and language disorders, Epi, and LDs were the common NDDs across sites. Upon risk modelling, noninstitutional delivery, history of perinatal asphyxia, neonatal illness, postnatal neurological/brain infections, stunting, LBW/prematurity, and older age category (6-9 year) were significantly associated with NDDs. The study sample was underrepresentative of stunting and LBW and had a 15.6% refusal. These factors could be contributing to underestimation of the true NDD burden in our population. CONCLUSIONS: The study identifies NDDs in children aged 2-9 years as a significant public health burden for India. HI was higher than and ASD prevalence comparable to the published global literature. Most risk factors of NDDs were modifiable and amenable to public health interventions

    Amlapitta is a very common disease caused by Vidagdha Pitta with features such as Amlodgara, Hrid Kantha Daha, and Avipaka. This is a burning problem of the society. Irregular and improper food habits, and busy stressful lifestyle is one of the main culprit. Amlapitta is the GI disorder described in Ayurvedic texts that closely resembles with Gastritis in modern science. In chronic stage, it may lead to ulcerative conditions. In this study, total 41 patients were registered and were randomly divided into two groups. In group A, Shatapatrayadi churna tablet and in group B Patoladi Yoga tablet were given for 1 month. The Nidana, signs, and symptoms were observed carefully to get idea about the Samprapti of the disease. The effect of Patoladi Yoga on Roga Bala is 65.79%, 62.11% on Agni Bala, and 63.35% on Deha and Chetasa bala. The overall relief was 63.75%. The effect of Shatapatrayadi tablet on Roga Bala was 71.94%, 73.15% on Agni Bala, and 77.68% on Deha and Chetas Bala. The overall relief was 74.25%

    Benzimidazole and their derivatives are of interest due to their great therapeutic index. 2-Substituted benzimidazoles were synthesized using Philips condensation(1) by refluxing o-phenylendiamine with carboxylic acid (formic acid, acetic acid, propanoic acid and lactic acid) in presence of conc. HCl. Benzimidazoles 1a-d thus obtained were subjected to aminomethylation reaction with formaldehyde and secondary amines (morpholine/Nmethylpiperazine) to give target Mannich bases, that is 2- substituted [(morpholin-4-yl/4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)methyl]-1H-benzimidazoles 3a-h. Characterization of synthesized Mannich bases is based on analytical and spectral studies. Synthesized compounds have also been screened for their antimicrobial activities

    A sunlight induced simple green route has been developed for the synthesis of polyacrylate functionalized gold nanoparticles (PAA-AuNPs), in which poly­(acrylic acid) functions as a reducing as well as stabilizing agent. This material has been characterized on the basis of spectroscopic and microscopic studies; it exhibited selective colorimetric detection of Al<sup>3+</sup> in aqueous media, and the Al<sup>3+</sup> induced aggregated PAA-AuNPs exhibited detection of F<sup>–</sup> with sharp color change and high selectivity and sensitivity out of a large number of metal ions and anions tested. The mechanistic study revealed that, for Al<sup>3+</sup>, the color change is due to a shift of the SPR band because of the Al<sup>3+</sup> induced aggregation of PAA-AuNPs, whereas for F<sup>–</sup>, the reverse color change (blue to red) with return of the SPR band to its original position is due to dispersion of aggregated PAA-AuNPs, as F<sup>–</sup> removes Al<sup>3+</sup> from the aggregated species by complex formation. Only concentration-dependent fluoride ion can prevent Al<sup>3+</sup> from aggregating PAA-AuNPs. The method is successfully used for the detection of F<sup>–</sup> in water collected from various sources by the spiking method, in toothpastes of different brands by the direct method. The solid Al<sup>3+</sup>-PAA-AuNPs were isolated, adsorbed on ZIF@8 (zeolitic imidazolate framework) and on a cotton strip, and applied as solid sensing material for detection of F<sup>–</sup> in aqueous media

    Congenital rubella syndrome surveillance in India, 2016–21: Analysis of five years surveillance data

    Background: In India, facility-based surveillance for congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) was initiated in 2016 to estimate the burden and monitor the progress made in rubella control. We analyzed the surveillance data for 2016–2021 from 14 sentinel sites to describe the epidemiology of CRS. Method: We analyzed the surveillance data to describe the distribution of suspected and laboratory confirmed CRS patients by time, place and person characteristics. We compared clinical signs of laboratory confirmed CRS and discarded case-patients to find independent predictors of CRS using logistic regression analysis and developed a risk prediction model. Results: During 2016–21, surveillance sites enrolled 3940 suspected CRS case-patients (Age 3.5 months, SD: 3.5). About one-fifth (n = 813, 20.6%) were enrolled during newborn examination. Of the suspected CRS patients, 493 (12.5%) had laboratory evidence of rubella infection. The proportion of laboratory confirmed CRS cases declined from 26% in 2017 to 8.7% in 2021. Laboratory confirmed patients had higher odds of having hearing impairment (Odds ratio [OR] = 9.5, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.6–16.2), cataract (OR = 7.8, 95% CI: 5.4–11.2), pigmentary retinopathy (OR = 6.7, 95 CI: 3.3–13.6), structural heart defect with hearing impairment (OR = 3.8, 95% CI: 1.2–12.2) and glaucoma (OR = 3.1, 95% CI: 1.2–8.1). Nomogram, along with a web version, was developed. Conclusions: Rubella continues to be a significant public health issue in India. The declining trend of test positivity among suspected CRS case-patients needs to be monitored through continued surveillance in these sentinel sites
