Type 0A 2D Black Hole Thermodynamics and the Deformed Matrix Model

Recently, it has been proposed that the deformed matrix model describes a two-dimensional type 0A extremal black hole. In this paper, the thermodynamics of 0A charged non-extremal black holes is investigated. We observe that the free energy of the deformed matrix model to leading order in 1/q can be seen to agree to that of the extremal black hole. We also speculate on how the deformed matrix model is able to describe the thermodynamics of non-extremal black holes.Comment: 12 page

This study investigated the composition of terrestrial OC exported to Arctic coastal waters to both obtain a natural integration of terrestrial permafrost OC release and to further understand the fate of released carbon in the extensive Siberian Shelf Seas. Application of a variety of elemental, molecular and isotopic (δ13C and Δ14C) analyses of both surface water suspended particulate matter and underlying surface sediments along a 500 km transect from Kolyma River mouth to the mid-shelf of the East Siberian Sea yielded information on the sources, degradation status and transport processes of thaw-mobilized soil OC. A three end-member dual-carbon-isotopic mixing model was applied to deduce the relative contributions from riverine, coastal erosion and marine sources. The mixing model was solved numerically using Monte Carlo simulations to obtain a fair representation of the uncertainties of both end-member composition and the end results. Riverine OC contributions to sediment OC decrease with increasing distance offshore (35±15 to 13±9%), whereas coastal erosion OC exhibits a constantly high contribution (51±11 to 60±12%) and marine OC increases offshore (9±7 to 36±10%). We attribute the remarkably strong imprint of OC from coastal erosion, extending up to ~500 km from the coast, to efficient offshoreward transport in these shallow waters presumably through both the benthic boundary layer and ice-rafting. There are also indications of simultaneous selective preservation of erosion OC compared to riverine OC. Molecular degradation proxies and radiocarbon contents indicated a degraded but young (Δ14C ca. −60‰ or ca. 500 14C years) terrestrial OC pool in surface water particulate matter, underlain by a less degraded but old (Δ14C ca. −500‰ or ca. 5500 14C years) terrestrial OC pool in bottom sediments. We suggest that the terrestrial OC fraction in surface water particulate matter is mainly derived from surface soil and recent vegetation fluvially released as buoyant organic-rich aggregates (e.g., humics), which are subjected to extensive processing during coastal transport. In contrast, terrestrial OC in the underlying sediments is postulated to originate predominantly from erosion of mineral-rich Pleistocene coasts (i.e., yedoma) and inland mineral soils. Sorptive association of this organic matter with mineral particles protects the OC from remineralization and also promotes rapid settling (ballasting) of the OC. Our findings corroborate recent studies by indicating that different Arctic surface soil OC pools exhibit distinguishing susceptibilities to degradation in coastal waters. Consequently, the general postulation of a positive feedback to global warming from degradation of permafrost carbon may be both attenuated (by reburial of one portion) and geographically displaced (degradation of released terrestrial permafrost OC far out over the Arctic shelf seas). The ISSS-08 program was supported by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, Headquarters of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Swedish Research Council (VR Contract No. 621-2004-4039 and 621-2007-4631), the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Siberian Shelf Study), the Russian Foundation of Basic Research (08-05-13572, 08-05-00191-a, and 07-05-00050a), the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat, the Arctic Co-Op Program of the Nordic Council of Ministers (331080-70219) and the National Science Foundation (OPP ARC 0909546). PURPOSE: There are indications that a history of allergy may offer some protection against cancer. We studied the relation of three objectively determined allergy markers with cancer mortality and hospitalization risk. METHODS: Associations between three allergy markers (number of peripheral blood eosinophil counts, skin test positivity, and serum total IgE) with mortality and hospitalization from any type and four common types of cancer (lung, colorectal, prostate, and breast cancer) were assessed in the Vlagtwedde-Vlaardingen cohort (1965-1990), with follow-up of mortality until 31 December 2008. Hospitalization data were available since 1 January 1995. RESULTS: There were no significant associations between objective allergy markers and cancer mortality or hospitalization. We found several associations in specific subgroups. A higher number of eosinophils was associated with a decreased risk of colorectal cancer mortality in ever smokers HR (95 % CI) = 0.61 (0.45-0.83) and in males 0.59 (0.42-0.83); however, no overall association was observed 0.84 (0.64-1.09). Skin test positivity was associated with a decreased risk of any cancer mortality only among females 0.59 (0.38-0.91) and showed no overall association 0.83 (0.67-1.04). Serum total IgE levels were associated with an increased risk of lung cancer mortality among females 4.64 (1.04-20.70), but with a decreased risk of cancer hospitalization in ever smokers 0.77 (0.61-0.97) and males 0.72 (0.55-0.93); however, no overall associations were observed [mortality 0.99 (0.79-1.25), and hospitalization 0.86 (0.71-1.04)]. CONCLUSIONS: We found no associations between objective allergy markers and cancer in the total population. However, skin test positivity and a high number of eosinophils were associated with a reduced risk to die of cancer in specific subgroups. Hence, it seems important to study specific subgroups defined by gender and smoking habits in order to identify allergy markers of predictive value for cancer mortality

A refined radio-telemetry technique to monitor right ventricle or pulmonary artery pressures in rats: a useful tool in pulmonary hypertension research

Implantable radio-telemetry methodology, allowing for continuous recording of pulmonary haemodynamics, has previously been used to assess effects of therapy on development and treatment of pulmonary hypertension. In the original procedure, rats were subjected to invasive thoracic surgery, which imposes significant stress that may disturb critical aspects of the cardiovascular system and delay recovery. In the present study, we describe and compare the original trans-thoracic approach with a new, simpler trans-diaphragm approach for catheter placement, which avoids the need for surgical invasion of the thorax. Satisfactory overall success rates up to 75% were achieved in both approaches, and right ventricular pressures and heart and respiratory rates normalised within 2 weeks. However, recovery was significantly faster in trans-diaphragm than in trans-thoracic operated animals (6.4 ± 0.5 vs 9.5 ± 1.1 days, respectively; p < 0.05). Stable right ventricular pressures were recorded for more than 4 months, and pressure changes, induced by monocrotaline or pulmonary embolisms, were readily detected. The data demonstrate that right ventricular telemetry is a practicable procedure and a useful tool in pulmonary hypertension research in rats, especially when used in combination with echocardiography. We conclude that the described trans-diaphragm approach should be considered as the method of choice, for it is less invasive and simpler to perform

Fractionation of Adipose Tissue Procedure With a Disposable One-Hole Fractionator

Background: Adipose tissue has been widely used in regenerative surgery for its therapeutic potential. This potential is often ascribed to the stromal vascular fraction (SVF), which can be mechanically isolated. Mechanical isolation results in an SVF that retains intact cell-cell communication including extracellular matrix and is therefore named tissue-SVF (tSVF). Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate a new disposable 1-hole fractionator for fractionation of adipose tissue (FAT), and compare this new device with the existing reusable 3-hole fractionator. Methods: The composition of tSVF obtained via the 1-hole fractionator was histologically and histochemically compared to unprocessed adipose tissue. The number of viable nuclear cells in tSVF obtained by the 1-hole and 3-hole fractionators as well as unprocessed adipose tissue were compared after enzymatic isolation and tested for colony-forming capacity. Flow cytometry was used to compare different cell compositions based on surface marker expression between tSVF isolated by the two types of fractionators. Results: Fractionation of adipose tissue with the 1-hole fractionator condenses vasculature and extracellular matrix by disrupting adipocytes. The number of viable nuclear cells in tSVF obtained with the two fractionators was comparable and significantly higher than unprocessed lipoaspirate. Furthermore, tSVF isolated by both fractionators showed similar cell compositions and comparable colony-forming capacities. Conclusions: FAT with a disposable 1-hole fractionator effectively isolates tSVF with a cell count and cell composition comparable to the fraction obtained with the 3-hole reusable fractionator. The disposable 1-hole fractionator, however, is safer and more user friendly

OBJECTIVES: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive and often fatal disease characterized by increased pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) and right ventricular (RV) failure. End-stage PAH is often an indication for a lung transplant (LTX). Our goal was to study ventricular recovery using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging late after LTX. METHODS: We studied 10 patients with PAH who underwent isolated bilateral LTX. RV and left ventricular (LV) volumes, function and mass were measured. In addition, the RV stroke volume/end-systolic ratio (SV/ESV), the LV eccentricity index, the RV/LV volume ratio, the area of the tricuspid valve annulus and the severity of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) were calculated. RESULTS: The median age was 44 [30-54] years and the mean PVR was 1020 ± 435 dynes·s·cm â ' 5. Six patients had ≥ moderate TR. After LTX, the RV ejection fraction increased from 32 to 64% (P < 0.001) and both RV volume (from 118 to 51 ml/m 2, P < 0.001) and RV mass (from 69 to 33 g/m 2, P < 0.001) decreased. The mean SV/ESV ratio increased from 0.5 to 1.9 (P < 0.001) and the LV mass increased from 55 to 61 g/m 2 (P = 0.005). There was a decrease in both the LV eccentricity index (from 2.8 to 1.1, P < 0.001) and the RV/LV volume ratio (from 2.3 to 0.8, P < 0.001). The area of the tricuspid valve annulus also decreased (from 9.8 to 4.6 cm 2 /m 2, P < 0.001); no patient had ≥ mild TR post-LTX. CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging confirms ventricular recovery after isolated bilateral LTX for end-stage PAH
