    Towards a module-based product platform for ship locks using DSM methods

    A significant number of ship locks in the Netherlands are due for renovation during the coming decades. To achieve this, Rijkswaterstaat (RWS), the executive branch of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, is investigating the options to meet the specific requirements, while allowing the necessary variety in the configuration of locks. This paper presents a method for the development of a module-based product platform for locks, based on component types and their combinations. By combining different design structure matrix (DSM) modeling methods, possible modules of lock components are defined and assessed. These modules consist of lock components that have a high level of commonality and thus influence each other. Together, these modules form the basis for a product platform for locks, supporting RWS with the renovation of their portfolio.</p

The renovation of ship locks allows RWS to reconsider current existing preferences for lock design and to investigate options to develop a product platform for locks. This paper presents a method for the development of such a platform, based on the functions of a lock and the component alternatives to provide that function. By applying design structure matrix (DSM) modeling and value analysis methods, a ranked set of feasible lock configurations can be obtained that meets the specific requirements for a particular lock location while trading against the desired commonality in the family of locks. Preferred configuration attributes are to be incorporated in a product platform for locks to support RWS with the planned lock renovations

    Comparative Genomics of Marine Bacteria from a Historically Defined Plastic Biodegradation Consortium with the Capacity to Biodegrade Polyhydroxyalkanoates

    Biodegradable and compostable plastics are getting more attention as the environmental impacts of fossil-fuel-based plastics are revealed. Microbes can consume these plastics and biodegrade them within weeks to months under the proper conditions. The biobased polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) polymer family is an attractive alternative due to its physicochemical properties and biodegradability in soil, aquatic, and composting environments. Standard test methods are available for biodegradation that employ either natural inocula or defined communities, the latter being preferred for standardization and comparability. The original marine biodegradation standard test method ASTM D6691 employed such a defined consortium for testing PHA biodegradation. However, the taxonomic composition and metabolic potential of this consortium have never been confirmed using DNA sequencing technologies. To this end, we revived available members of this consortium and determined their phylogenetic placement, genomic sequence content, and metabolic potential. The revived members belonged to the Bacillaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, and Vibrionaceae families. Using a comparative genomics approach, we found all the necessary enzymes for both PHA production and utilization in most of the members. In a clearing-zone assay, three isolates also showed extracellular depolymerase activity. However, we did not find classical PHA depolymerases, but identified two potentially new extracellular depolymerases that resemble triacylglycerol lipases

    Overcoming barriers to equality, diversity, inclusivity, and sense of belonging in healthcare education: the Underrepresented Groups’ Experiences in Osteopathic Training (UrGEnT) mixed methods study.

    Background: Individuals from minority groups have historically faced social injustices. Those from underrepresented groups have been less likely to access both healthcare services and higher education. Little is known about the experiences of underrepresented students during their undergraduate studies in osteopathy in the UK. The aim of this project was to explore awareness of cultural diversity and beliefs about patients from underrepresented groups in current osteopathic educational environments and evaluate students' preparedness to manage patients from diverse groups. The project also aimed to investigate the educational experiences of students from underrepresented backgrounds during their training and their opinions on changes that could support better levels of recruitment and achievement. The findings were discussed with stakeholders in interactive workshops with the aim to develop recommendations for action and change. Methods: A transformative action research paradigm informed this mixed methods project. It included: 1/ a survey of students from all seven osteopathic educational providers in the UK using the Multidimensional Cultural Humility Scale (MCHS); 2/ a series of focus groups with students from underrepresented groups (women, students with disabilities, students from minority ethnic backgrounds, and students identifying as LGBTQIA+); and 3/ a workshop forum to discuss findings. Results: A total of 202 participants completed the MCHS and demographic questionnaire and seven focus groups were conducted. A model was developed to describe participants' training experiences comprising two main themes: institutional contextual obstacles (with four sub-themes) and underrepresented students' conceptual understanding of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). Recommendations for change identified in the workshops were based on three topics: institutions, staff, and students. Conclusion: Our findings confirm conclusions from other institutions that staff education is urgently needed to create and maintain equitable, inclusive environments in osteopathic educational institutions in the UK to support all students, particularly those from underrepresented groups. Institutional EDI processes and policies also need to be clarified or modified to ensure their usefulness, accessibility, and implementation

    Neutrino magnetic moments and photo-disintegration of deuterium

    Neutrinos with non-zero magnetic moments can dissociate deuterium nuclei by a photon exchange, in addition to the weak neutral current process. We calculate the neutrino-magnetic moment induced photo-dissociation cross section of deuterium using the equivalent photon method. This process would contribute extra events to the neutral current reaction which is observed with high precision in the salt-phase of SNO experiment. Using the SNO data and the recent laboratory measurements of the 7Be(p,γ)8B^7 Be (p, \gamma) ^8 B reaction which give a more precise value of the solar 8B^8 B flux we find that the neutrino effective magnetic moment is μeff2=(−2.76±1.46)×10−16μB2\mu_{eff}^2 = (-2.76 \pm 1.46) \times 10^{-16} \mu_B^2 which can be interpreted as an upper bound ∣μeff∣<3.71×10−9μB|\mu_{eff}| < 3.71 \times 10^{-9} \mu_B (at 9595% CL) on the neutrino magnetic moments.Comment: 7 pages, new references and some comments adde

    Degeneracies when T=0 Two Body Matrix Elements are Set Equal to Zero and Regge's 6j Symmetry Relations

    The effects of setting all T=0 two body interaction matrix elements equal to a constant (or zero) in shell model calculations (designated as =0=0) are investigated. Despite the apparent severity of such a procedure, one gets fairly reasonable spectra. We find that using =0=0 in single j shell calculations degeneracies appear e.g. the I=1/2−I={1/2} ^{-} and 13/2−{13/2}^{-} states in 43^{43}Sc are at the same excitation energies; likewise the I=32+3_{2}^{+},72+7_{2}^{+},91+^{+}_{1} and 101+^{+}_{1} states in 44^{44}Ti. The above degeneracies involve the vanishing of certain 6j and 9j symbols. The symmetry relations of Regge are used to explain why these vanishings are not accidental. Thus for these states the actual deviation from degeneracy are good indicators of the effects of the T=0 matrix elements. A further indicator of the effects of the T=0 interaction in an even - even nucleus is to compare the energies of states with odd angular momentum with those that are even
