SchussenAktivplus: reduction of micropollutants and of potentially pathogenic bacteria for further water quality improvement of the river Schussen, a tributary of Lake Constance, Germany

    Get PDF
The project focuses on the efficiency of combined technologies to reduce the release of micropollutants and bacteria into surface waters via sewage treatment plants of different size and via stormwater overflow basins of different types. As a model river in a highly populated catchment area, the river Schussen and, as a control, the river Argen, two tributaries of Lake Constance, Southern Germany, are under investigation in this project. The efficiency of the different cleaning technologies is monitored by a wide range of exposure and effect analyses including chemical and microbiological techniques as well as effect studies ranging from molecules to communities

On the daily cycle of mesoscale cloud organization in the winter trades

    Get PDF
International audienceHow spatial organization of clouds at the mesoscale contributes to the daily cycle of shallow cumulus clouds and precipitation is here explored, for the first time, using three years of high-frequency satellite- and ground-based observations. We focus on the four prominent patterns of cloud organization – Sugar, Gravel, Flowers and Fish – which were found recently to characterize well the variability of the North Atlantic winter trades. Our analysis is based on a simple framework to disentangle the parts of the daily cycle of trade-wind cloudiness that are due to changes in (a) the occurrence frequency of patterns, and (b) cloud cover for a given pattern. Our investigation reveals that the contribution of mesoscale organization to the daily cycle in cloudiness is largely mediated by the frequency of pattern occurrence. All forms of mesoscale organization exhibit a pronounced daily cycle in their frequency of occurrence, with distinct 24-hr phasing. The patterns Fish and Sugar can be viewed as daytime patterns, with a frequency peak around noon for Fish and towards sunset for Sugar. The patterns Gravel and Flowers appear instead as night-time patterns, with a peak occurrence around midnight for Gravel and before sunrise for Flowers. The cloud cover for a given pattern, however, always maximizes at night-time (between 0000 and 0300 hr), regardless of the specific pattern. Analyses of the role of large-scale environmental conditions shows that the near-surface wind speed can explain a large part of the diurnal variability in pattern frequency and cloudiness

Estimating the Shallow Convective Mass Flux from the Subcloud-Layer Mass Budget

    No full text
International audienceThis paper develops a method to estimate the shallow-convective mass flux M at the top of the subcloud layer as a residual of the subcloud-layer mass budget. The ability of the mass-budget estimate to reproduce the mass flux diagnosed directly from the cloud-core area fraction and vertical velocity is tested using real-case large-eddy simulations over the tropical Atlantic. We find that M reproduces well the magnitude, diurnal cycle, and day-today variability of the core-sampled mass flux, with an average root-mean-square error of less than 30% of the mean. The average M across the four winter days analyzed is 12 mm s 21 , where the entrainment rate E contributes on average 14 mm s 21 and the large-scale vertical velocity W contributes 22 mm s 21. We find that day-today variations in M are mostly explained by variations in W, whereas E is very similar among the different days analyzed. Instead E exhibits a pronounced diurnal cycle, with a minimum of about 10 mm s 21 around sunset and a maximum of about 18 mm s 21 around sunrise. Application of the method to dropsonde data from an airborne field campaign in August 2016 yields the first measurements of the mass flux derived from the mass budget, and supports the result that the variability in M is mostly due to the variability in W. Our analyses thus suggest a strong coupling between the day-today variability in shallow convective mixing (as measured by M) and the large-scale circulation (as measured by W). Application of the method to the EUREC 4 A field campaign will help evaluate this coupling, and assess its implications for cloud-base cloudiness

Cold Pools Observed during EUREC4A: Detection and Characterization from Atmospheric Soundings

    No full text
International audienceA new method is developed to detect cold pools from atmospheric soundings over tropical oceans and applied to sounding data from the Elucidating the Role of Cloud-Circulation Coupling in Climate (EUREC4A) field campaign, which took place south and east of Barbados in January-February 2020. The proposed method uses soundings to discriminate cold pools from their surroundings: cold pools are defined as regions where the mixed-layer height is smaller than 400 m. The method is first tested against 2D surface temperature and precipitation fields in a realistic high-resolution simulation over the western tropical Atlantic Ocean. Then, the method is applied to a dataset of 1068 atmospheric profiles from dropsondes (launched from two aircraft) and 1105 from radiosondes (launched from an array of four ships and the Barbados Cloud Observatory). We show that 7% of the EUREC4A soundings fell into cold pools. Cold-pool soundings coincide with (i) mesoscale cloud arcs and (ii) temperature drops of ∌1 K relative to the environment, along with moisture increases of ∌1 g kg-1. Furthermore, cold-pool moisture profiles exhibit a “moist layer” close to the surface, topped by a “dry layer” until the cloud base level, and followed by another moist layer in the cloud layer. In the presence of wind shear, the spreading of cold pools is favored downshear, suggesting downward momentum transport by unsaturated downdrafts. The results support the robustness of our detection method in diverse environmental conditions and its simplicity makes the method a promising tool for the characterization of cold pools, including their vertical structure. The applicability of the method to other regions and convective regimes is discussed

Evaluation of European regional reanalyses and downscalings for precipitation in the Alpine region

    Get PDF
Datasets of the observed weather and climate on a regular grid are an important requisite for environmental and climate change research. In this paper we evaluate several European-scale regional reanalyses, developed in the EU project EURO4M, and compare them to existing datasets popularly used in applications today. The evaluation focuses on precipitation in the region of the European Alps, which, due to the marked topographic imprints, poses a challenging test bed. Utilizing a set of statistical indicators, we examine how the datasets represent the spatial pattern, annual cycle, frequency distribution and interannual variations. The evaluated datasets encompass new model-based regional reanalyses (UKMO and HIRLAM) and downscaling datasets (MESAN and MESCAN), one global reanalysis (ERA-Interim), and three station-based interpolation datasets (E-Obs, CRU, GPCC). The reference (APGD) is a gridded interpolation derived from very dense rain-gauge observations. The evaluation provides insight into the relative strengths and limitations of the various datasets and construction concepts. The new model-based regional reanalyses show richer spatial variations in the climatology of daily precipitation compared to the driving global reanalysis (ERA-Interim), and they correct for several unrealistic spatial features seen in global and continental interpolation datasets. But they also show biases, shifts in regional anomalies and inaccuracies in mountain-valley contrasts. Common to both regional reanalyses are overestimates of mean precipitation and wet day frequency, and an underestimate of the frequency of heavy precipitation. The 4DVar UKMO reanalysis shows a better space-time coherency with APGD compared to the 3DVar HIRLAM reanalysis. The accuracy of datasets that explicitly use rain-gauge observations (interpolation and downscaling) is found to be very heterogeneous, depending on the density of available station time series. In regions of high station density, downscaling procedures effectively correct for biases in the underlying reanalysis and reduce RMSE and SEEPS errors by a factor of 2 to 5. In areas where E-Obs and the downscaling datasets have similar input of station data the skill of the two methodologies is comparable. Interannual variations of monthly mean precipitation are highly correlated (>0.9>0.9>0.9) with those of the reference for all European-scale datasets and even for meso-beta scale subregions. Our evaluations illustrate that the new regional reanalyses provide a valuable data resource also in a region with complex topography, but many applications will have to involve bias correction and downscaling procedures based on direct observations, ideally at high spatial resolution
