    Design Criteria and Optical Characteristics of One-Dimensional Photonic Crystals Based on Periodically Grooved Silicon

    Photonic bandgap (PBG) regions have been calculated for periodically grooved Si structures, acting as a one-dimensional photonic crystal. The wavelength range of the PBG as a function of the ratio (DSi/A) is presented, where DSi is the width of the Si walls and A is the grooved silicon lattice constant. The influence of the parameter DSi, the refractive index of the space between the Si walls and the number of structure periods, m, on the forming of PBG regions is discussed. A good correlation between the calculated and the experimentally observed PBG regions is obtained

    H2O MegaMasers: a RadioAstron success story

    The RadioAstron space-VLBI mission has successfully detected extragalactic H2O MegaMaser emission regions at very long Earth to space baselines ranging between 1.4 and 26.7 Earth Diameters (ED). The preliminary results for two galaxies, NGC3079 and NGC4258, at baselines longer than one ED indicate masering environments and excitation conditions in these galaxies that are distinctly different.     Background: Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem and particularly of concern in nosocomial infections. Nosocomial pneumonia occurs in 0.4—1.1% of hospitalized patients. It is the most common infection in intensive care units. Bacterial colonization of the upper airway followed by micro aspiration or macro inspiration into the lungs is considered the primary mechanism for development of nosocomial pneumonia. More than 90% of cases of nosocomial pneumonia are caused by bacteria, 15—30% represented with staphylococcus aureus. Following the data of a 4-year long period the resistance to methicillin was identified in ≈32% with a tendency of increasing percentage of MRSA isolates up to 35%, originated from samples taken among patients from ICU in the Clinical Center of Skopje
