Phonon `notches' in a-b -plane optical conductivity of high-Tc superconductors
It is shown that a correlation between the positions of the -axis
longitudinal optic () phonons and ``notch''-like structures in the
- plane conductivity of high- superconductors results from
phonon-mediated interaction between electrons in different layers. It is found
that the relative size of the notches depends on
, where ,
and are the effective coupling strength, the frequency and the
width of the optical phonon which is responsible for the notch. Even for

Correlation-function spectroscopy of inelastic lifetime in heavily doped GaAs heterostructures
Measurements of resonant tunneling through a localized impurity state are
used to probe fluctuations in the local density of states of heavily doped
GaAs. The measured differential conductance is analyzed in terms of correlation
functions with respect to voltage. A qualitative picture based on the scaling
theory of Thouless is developed to relate the observed fluctuations to the
statistics of single particle wavefunctions. In a quantitative theory
correlation functions are calculated. By comparing the experimental and
theoretical correlation functions the effective dimensionality of the emitter
is analyzed and the dependence of the inelastic lifetime on energy is

Pseudo-time Schroedinger equation with absorbing potential for quantum scattering calculations
The Schroedinger equation with an energy-dependent complex absorbing
potential, associated with a scattering system, can be reduced for a special
choice of the energy-dependence to a harmonic inversion problem of a discrete
pseudo-time correlation function. An efficient formula for Green's function
matrix elements is also derived. Since the exact propagation up to time 2t can
be done with only t real matrix-vector products, this gives an unprecedently
efficient scheme for accurate calculations of quantum spectra for possibly very

Setting the agenda: Climate change adaptation and mitigation for food systems in the developing world
New agricultural development pathways are required to meet climate change adaptation and mitigation needs in the food systems of low-income countries. A research and policy agenda is provided to indicate where innovation and new knowledge are needed. Adaptation requires identifying suitable crop varieties and livestock breeds, as well as building resilient farming and natural resources systems, institutions for famine and crop failure relief, and mechanisms for rapid learning by farmers. Mitigation requires transitioning to ‘low climate impact’ agriculture that reduces emissions while achieving food security, economic well-being and sustainability. Efficient interventions, incentives for large-scale shifts in practices, and monitoring systems are required. Integrated assessments of adaptation and mitigation are needed to better understand the synergies and trade-offs among outcomes
Orbital effect of in-plane magnetic field on quantum transport in chaotic lateral dots
We show how the in-plane magnetic field, which breaks time-reversal and
rotational symmetries of the orbital motion of electrons in a heterostructure
due to the momentum-dependent inter-subband mixing, affects weak localisation
correction to conductance of a large-area chaotic lateral quantum dot and
parameteric dependences of universal conductance fluctuations in it.Comment: 4 pages with a figur
Cosmological solutions in multidimensional model with multiple exponential potential
A family of cosmological solutions with Ricci-flat spaces in the
theory with several scalar fields and multiple exponential potential is
obtained when coupling vectors in exponents obey certain relations. Two
subclasses of solutions with power-law and exponential behaviour of scale
factors are singled out. It is proved that power-law solutions may take place
only when coupling vectors are linearly independent and exponential dependence
occurs for linearly dependent set of coupling vectors. A subfamily of solutions
with accelerated expansion is singled out. A generalized isotropization
behaviours of certain classes of general solutions are found. In quantum case
exact solutions to Wheeler-DeWitt equation are obtained and special "ground

Multi-user video streaming using unequal error protection network coding in wireless networks
In this paper, we investigate a multi-user video streaming system applying unequal error protection (UEP) network coding (NC) for simultaneous real-time exchange of scalable video streams among multiple users. We focus on a simple wireless scenario where users exchange encoded data packets over a common central network node (e.g., a base station or an access point) that aims to capture the fundamental system behaviour. Our goal is to present analytical tools that provide both the decoding probability analysis and the expected delay guarantees for different importance layers of scalable video streams. Using the proposed tools, we offer a simple framework for design and analysis of UEP NC based multi-user video streaming systems and provide examples of system design for video conferencing scenario in broadband wireless cellular networks
