The Euclidean ideal of proof in The Elements and philological uncertainties of Heiberg's edition of the text

In this chapter, I study the history of the text of Euclid's Elements including the use of the indirect medieval tradition in arabic and latin. I discuss the positions of Heiberg and Knorr. I propose a typology of the volontary alterations of Euclid's text during its transmission. Some textual criterias can be used to choice between local variants but they do not converge at the global level of an Ancient or medieval Version. The choice depends on the type of change (addition/deletion; change the order of exposition or proofs' modifications) ; it depends too of the Book or the kind of textual units concerned (Definition;Proposition;Porism;Lemma)

Héron d'Alexandrie et le corpus métrologique : état des lieux

Il s'agit d'un document composé pour le Séminaire d'histoire des mathématiques de Lille (UMR 8163 « Savoirs, textes, langage » CNRS/Universités de Lille et UMR 8210 « ANHIMA », Paris) organisé par F. Acerbi et moi-même, texte revu et modifié pour les Journées d'études « Géométrie(s), pratiques d'arpentage et enseignement : quels liens et dans quel contexte ? » organisées par Alain Bernard et Christine Proust les 15-16 Mars 2010 à Paris.International audienceIn this survey of the heronian and pseudo heronian corpus, I examine the following points : • Works attributed to Heron of Alexandria • The metrological corpus : editions; manuscripts • Collections of problems reconstructed by J.L. Heiberg (Teubner edition) • A chronology of the metrological corpus from an historiographical point of view • Authenticity • Relationships between Metrica (authentic heronian treatise) and the other writings in the corpus. Nine appendices are added to the text which include some informations about the known manuscripts, the content of the most important manuscripts, the content and the structure of the collections reconstructed by J.L. Heiberg (Geometrica, Stereometrica I, Stereometrica II), titles, authors and works mentionned in the manuscripts.Dans cet état des lieux du corpus métrologique héronien et pseudo héronien, j'aborde les points suivants : • Oeuvres attribuées à Héron d'Alexandrie • Le corpus métrologique : éditions; traditions manuscrites • Les collections de problèmes reconstituées par J.L. The Uses of Argument in Mathematics

Stephen Toulmin once observed that `it has never been customary for philosophers to pay much attention to the rhetoric of mathematical debate'. Might the application of Toulmin's layout of arguments to mathematics remedy this oversight? Toulmin's critics fault the layout as requiring so much abstraction as to permit incompatible reconstructions. Mathematical proofs may indeed be represented by fundamentally distinct layouts. Propolis can potentialise the anti-adhesion activity of proanthocyanidins on uropathogenic Escherichia coli in the prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Escherichia coli</it>, the main bacteria found in recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI), is now frequently resistant to several currently used antibiotic treatments making new solutions essential. In this study, we evaluated the association propolis and proanthocyanidins type A to reduce bacterial anti-adhesion activity of <it>E. coli </it>on urothelial cells.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>This first double-blind, randomized, cross-over human trial included 5 volunteers that followed 6 different regimens with or without variable doses of cranberry and propolis with a washout period of at least 1 week between each regimen. Urine samples were collected at 0 h, 4-6 h, 12 h and 24 h after cranberry plus propolis or placebo capsule consumption. In vivo urinary bacterial anti-adhesion activity was assessed with a bioassay (a human T24 epithelial cell-line assay) and an in vivo <it>Caenorhabditis elegans </it>model. HPLC-PDA-MS was used to detect propolis and cranberry compounds in urine. Bioassays indicated significant bacterial anti-adhesion activity in urine collected from volunteers who had consumed cranberry plus propolis powder compared to placebo (<it>p </it>< 0.001). This inhibition was clearly dose-dependent, increasing with the amount of PACs and propolis equivalents consumed in each regimen. Results suggested that propolis had an additional effect with PACs and prevent a bacterial anti-adhesion effect over 1 day. An in vivo model showed that the <it>E. coli </it>strain presented a reduced ability to kill <it>C. elegans </it>after their growth in urine samples of patients who took cranberry plus propolis capsules. HPLC confirmed that propolis is excreted in urine.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study presents an alternative to prevent recurrent UTI. Administration of PACs plus propolis once daily offers some protection against bacterial adhesion, bacterial multiplication and virulence in the urinary tract, representing an interesting new strategy to prevent recurrent UTI.</p

Hercynian late-post-tectonic granitic rocks from the Fornos de Algodres area (Northern Central Portugal)

The Fornos de Algodres Complex (FAC) comprises several intrusions of late-post-tectonic Hercynian granitic rocks ranging in composition from hornblende granodiorites and quartz monzodiorites, through coarse porphyritic biotite granites and two-mica granites (coarse-, medium- and fine-grained), to muscovite-rich leucogranites. Field and regional constraints show that the emplacement of this large, composite, batholithic complex post-dates the main Variscan regional deformation phases (D1 + D2 + D3) and associated metamorphic events. Field, petrographic and geochemical data suggest a strong genetic relationship between most of the members of the FAC. However, their Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd isotopic signatures appear to rule out any genetic process involving a single homogeneous source and/or closed-system fractional crystallization of the same parental magma. A model involving hybridization of mantle-derived basaltic liquids with crustal anatectic melts followed by further contamination and fractional crystallization is proposed to explain the isotopic and geochemical variation trends defined by the FAC granitic rocks

Collections et séries de problèmes métrologiques dans le corpus héronien et pseudo-héronien12

Dans cet article, nous délimitons un corpus de textes mathématiques grecs anciens selon plusieurs critères (thématique, codicologique, auctorial). La désignation n'est pas le fait des Anciens, mais la nôtre et l'un des objectifs de cet article est de justifier qu'il s'agit bien d'un corpus. Pour l'essentiel, il est composé de problèmes d'un genre particulier, les problèmes métrologiques, qui suivent un schéma formel et stylistique assez strict que nous dégageons et exemplifions. Deux autres niveaux d'analyse textuelle sont introduits : les collections – force est de constater l'écart qu'il y a parfois entre leur mode d'existence codicologique et la manière dont elles ont été éditées aux XIXe-XXe siècles – et les séries. Nous montrons que certaines de ces séries se laissent facilement identifier en tant qu'intersection de collections tandis que, pour d'autres, la cohérence est à chercher du côté d'un critère logique ou algorithmique qui correspond lui-même à un (ou plusieurs) des constituants du schéma de problème métrologique. Les particularités de ce corpus, assez différentes de celles reconnues aux compilations d'autres types de problèmes, tiennent certainement autant aux modalités de sa transmission qu'aux spécificités du domaine qu'il représente

Les scholies grecques aux Éléments d'Euclide / Greek scholia on Euclid's Elements

SUMMARY. — The margins of Byzantine Greek manuscripts, in particular those of Euclid's Elements, are copiously annotated. After briefly recalling the nature, sorts and functions of these scholia, this paper aims to justify an examination based on the history of the text and its use. The results obtained by J. L. Heiberg are summarized. If a number of scholia can be ascertained to be of ancient origin, some of Heiberg's claims concerning the so-called Vatican collection are not corroborated on the basis of comparison with Pappus' Commentary on book X.RÉSUMÉ. — Les marges des manuscrits grecs byzantins, en particulier ceux des Éléments d'Euclide, sont riches de multiples annotations. Après avoir brièvement rappelé la nature, les types et les fonctions de ces scholia, l'article tente de justifier leur étude du point de vue de l'histoire du texte et de celle de l'utilisation du traité euclidien. Les résultats obtenus par Heiberg sont résumés. S'il se confirme que nombre de scholies sont bien d'origine antique, certaines des affirmations de Heiberg, notamment à propos de la collection dite vaticane, ne sont guère corroborées par la confrontation avec le Commentaire de Pappus au livre X.Vitrac Bernard. Les articles qui constituent le présent dossier sont issus d’interventions présentées dans le cadre du Séminaire commun du Centre Louis Gernet, aux cours des années 2003-2004, 2004-2005, coordonné par Jean-Louis Labarrière, Jesper Svenbro et moi-même. Le thème en était « Valeurs et fonctions des arts (tekhnai, artes) » et au-delà de cette thématique générale et de l’origine commune de ces contributions, l’impression de simple juxtaposition, l’absence de cohérence seront probablement difficile..
