A new information system for tracing geolocations of bovine cattle

National audienceThe present paper describes the main idea of a new information system architecture dedicated to the animal geolocation acquisitions. It is applied to traceability of beefs in Brazil. In case of sanitary alerts, the system should be able to determine the animals which have been in contact with a diseased animal. This proposal is issued from studies undertaken in the project OTAG supported by the European Union. OTAG focuses on improving methods and geotechnologies for recording reliable and accurate data on beef production. OTAG develops an operational geo-decisional system to track and trace the mobility, provenance, and state of beef cattle. The presented method enables the acquisition of animal geolocations at a large scale. It minimizes the quantity of devices equipped on animals, and consequently the global economical and energetic costs of the system

Implementação de estratégias de acesso aberto em uma instituição de pesquisa de grande porte na área de agricultura : a experiência da Embrapa

O trabalho apresenta a experiência da Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária, instituição de pesquisa de grande porte, líder mundial em agricultura tropical, no planejamento e implementação de iniciativas de acesso aberto à informação científica no contexto de um país em desenvolvimento. SWAMP:Smart Water Management Platform Overview and Security Challenges

The intensive use of technology in precision irrigation for agriculture is getting momentum in order to optimize the use of water, reduce the energy consumption and improve the quality of crops. Internet of Things (IoT) and other technologies are the natural choices for smart water management applications, and the SWAMP project is expected to prove the appropriateness of IoT in real settings with the deployment of on-site pilots. At the same time, the more intense the use of technology is, agriculture turns new security risks, which may affect both crop development and the commodities market. A security breach may irreversibly compromise a crop and data eavesdropping may compromise price and contracts exposing sensitive data such crop quality, development or management. This paper discusses security challenges and technologies for the application of IoT in agriculture and indicates that one of the most relevant challenges to be handled in SWAMP project is dealing with the multitude of behaviors from IoT application and what would be considered as normal and what would be considered as a threat

Building up an Open Data Plan for a public Research and Development organization and the challenge of an Open Agricultural Science

In keeping with the Open Data Policy of the Federal Executive Branch and the Law on Access to Information, the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) has initiated discussions on the construction of its Open Data Plan – a planning tool for implementation and rationalization of open data publishing processes in public organizations. This paper aims to report the general strategy that was established for this purpose and the challenges that have been encountered in the preliminary stages of its implementation. As the opening of data by research institutions in Brazil is still in its infancy, Embrapa’s experience is expected to contribute to similar initiatives from other organizations

Open Access at Embrapa: brief history, recent advances and challenges

The paper aims to report on the main initiatives developed by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) on open access to scientific and technological information, as well as initiating the organization and availability of research data. For this purpose, a history is made, starting in 2008, when the Company, through an internal project, consolidated several actions in the scope of information management, especially the publication of its open access repositories (Alice and Infoteca-e). Next, more recent initiatives are described, such as the Open Access scenario developed within the framework of a strategic institutional project on data, information and knowledge governance, initiated in 2015 and finalized in 2017, which presented a series of guidelines to be observed on the theme by the managers and the community of Embrapa with the purpose of aligning it with the international trends

Software livre para implementação de repositórios digitais e provedores de serviços: experiência da Embrapa Informática Agropecuária

The paper presents the technical expertise of Embrapa Information Technology (CNPTIA), research institution in information technology for agriculture in the context of free software for implementing digital repositories and service providers. More specifically, the studies will be reported and open source solutions chosen to enable the insertion of Embrapa in alternative Open Access model, which aims to promote free and unfettered access to scientific production by researchers and institutions, and has the deployment of digital repositories, institutional or subject, one of its main strategies
