Tactile Hallucinations: Presenting Symptom of Schizophrenia

    Get PDF
Although previous reports about tactile hallucinations of sexual content suggesting Schizophrenia are known2, this disorder has been characterized mostly by hallucinations of visual/auditory content. At Schizophrenia presentation these two types of hallucinations are the prominent features. This report describes a patient who had no previous psychiatric symptoms and for whom tactile hallucinations were the presenting symptom of Schizophrenia

Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Nuclear Science and Engineering, 2011.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 37).Using recently collected data which was measured with state-of-the-art techniques, models for nucleation site density, bubble departure diameter, and nucleation frequency were compared against the acquired data. The particular focus of this work is on the ebullition cycle and associated bubble nucleation frequency, looking at the models proposed by M.Z. Podowski. In my analysis, I took the average values for the growth and dwell times directly from the data, rather than from the models for those parameters. The results of those investigations showed that the basic principles approach for considering the parameters of the ebullition cycle held up pretty well with the experimental data, with Ti(t), the temperature curve during the ebullition cycle, corresponding remarkably well with the data curves. However, one parameter which was always overvalued was T(0*) - the predicted temperature of the start of the dwell phase. It was generally 1-2 degrees Celsius higher than the experimental value. For a fully rigorous analysis of the ebullition models in future works, it is recommended that all parameters be predicted rather than pulled from the data, particularly of the growth and dwell times.by Matthew Miguel Virgen.S.B

Development of a Cellular Model for Morquio A Syndrome

Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (MPS IVA; Morquio A), is a lysosomal storage disorder characterized by the deficiency of N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfatase (GALNS), resulting in the accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) such as keratan sulfate (KS) (Northover et al., 1996) and chondroitin-6-sulfate. There is no applicable animal model or appropriate cell lines currently available for the study of MPS IVA. Furthermore, patient-specific material is limited and difficult to obtain, rendering the study of MPSIVA pathogenesis challenging. Thus, the generation of an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line from patient-specific somatic cells shows potential for further examining the pathogenesis of MPS IVA. With this technology, differentiation protocols could be used to acquire desired cell types. In this study, an iPSC model was established for MPSIVA as well as an unaffected phenotype expressing pluripotency markers, rendering it capable for differentiations. A direct and a progressive approach were taken for the differentiation of iPSCs into a chondrogenic lineage. The direct differentiation of iPSCs into chondrocytes was unsuccessful due to inconsistent results. An alternate indirect route through the establishment of an intermediate mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) lineage before chondrogenesis was then investigated and reached. With the MSCs, it was shown that the severe disease clone not only has a decreased cell growth capacity, but also has larger lysosomes and altered cytoskeleton structure, suggesting a clear phenotype that could be altered upon treatment with rhGALNS. Furthermore, the MSCs can be loaded with KS to recapitulate accumulation within the cell and levels are corrected to the unaffected phenotype with rhGALNS. Thus a bioassay for measuring the intracellular activity of rhGALNS is introduced. Several attempts were made to further differentiate the MSCs into chondrocytes, a difficult endeavor with varying results. The established iPSC and MSC lines are a promising tool for the further development and understanding of MPSIVA as well of a functional bioassay for rhGALNS using the natural substrate, lumican, of the enzyme

Implementation of Cholesteric Liquid Crystals in Fibrous Based Membranes

The project consists of an investigation of optical sensors. On this project, the main focus was to implement materials that had properties such as thermochromism, piezochromism, and be able to detect volatile organic compounds with a color change response. The materials selected for this project were Cholesteric Liquid Crystals (CLCs) in different combinations and ratios. There were also four different methods using Forcespinning © technology to apply the CLCs into a polymer matrix; these were, In-Solution, Dip Coating, Coaxial Spinning, and Emulsion. The best results were given by Dip Coating, but the method with the best viable solution was Coaxial Spinning though it still needs further optimization

This study aims at determining students' perceptions of learning English using Londo Kampung vlog as a learning media to develop the speaking skill. The theoretical framework focuses on the concept of vlogs and English-speaking competence. It is a qualitative case study with statements as the data, and the data source is interviews with 14 of 11th grade students, SMA Sejahtera Surabaya, the data collection technique is structural interviews, and the data analysis technique is descriptive. The results showed that students have a positive perception of using Londo Kampung vlogs as learning media to improve speaking skills in English

This research contributes to answering one of the problems that currently affects the quality of the diagnostic process. Its objective is the development of a system of activities for the preparation of the teacher in the process of diagnosing behavioral alterations in schoolchildren at the primary school "Faustino Vega Santiesteban". In its development, theoretical methods were used such as: analytical - synthetic, inductive - deductive, and the system and empirical approach: interview, survey and documentary study. In addition, the percentage calculation was used as a mathematical procedure. The application of the activities allowed to favor the process of diagnosis of the alterations in the behavior in schoolchildren of the first cycle of primary school, to transform the modes of action of the schoolchildren and the social relationship in the different contexts of action.
