Making sense of the past trauma in narratives of the self: moral space of self-interpretation

This paper applies modern interdisciplinary methodologies to sociological data in order to enhance our understanding of the silences and distortions inherent in post-traumatic narratives of the self, and the mechanisms behind them, by placing these narratives in historical, as well as psychological, perspective. In particular, we use a narrative psycholo-gy approach. In addition, we use gender analysis, as the study is based on a corpus of oral data collected through a series of interviews with divorced men. Our research demonstrates that post-traumatic self-narratives are shaped not only by the attempts of the respondents to conceal their moral failures by creating an alternative version of self in personal terms, but also by their desire to adhere to the norms and standards including gender stereotypes of their historical time and social strata

Для анализа эмпирических данных был использован показатель уроженец/неуроженец для определения территориальной мобильности респондентов. Этническая принадлежность респондентов учитывалась, исходя из культурно–этнической среды, характерной для каждой обследованной территории. Bulk-sensitive Photoemission of Mn5Si3

We have carried out a bulk-sensitive high-resolution photoemission experiment on Mn5Si3. The measurements are performed for both core level and valence band states. The Mn core level spectra are deconvoluted into two components corresponding to different crystallographic sites. The asymmetry of each component is of noticeable magnitude. In contrast, the Si 2p spectrum shows a simple Lorentzian shape with low asymmetry. The peaks of the valence band spectrum correspond well to the peak positions predicted by the former band calculation.Comment: To be published in: Solid State Communication

На основе критического компаративного анализа, как классического теоретического наследия, так и современной научной литературы очерчены основные понятия, принципы и элементы гражданского общества, четко выделены его главные функции в правовом государстве. Доказано, что стратегические и тактические цели гражданского общества в правовом государстве реализуются на практике с помощью его функций. В своих функциях гражданское общество материализуется, раскрывается его сущность, социальное предназначение и служебная роль. Проанализированы закономерности этого процесса, подтвержденные общемировым опытом, которые проявляются через национальную специфику Украины. Основной особенностью и противоречием переходного общества, которым является современная Украина, есть то, что сложности переходных процессов, с одной стороны, обусловливают укрепление регулирующей роли государства, а, с другой – построение гражданского общества предусматривает разгосударствление общественных институтов, уменьшение государственного влияний на них. Electron spin resonance study on the 4f honeycomb quantum magnet YbCl3

The local magnetic properties of Yb$^{3+}$ in the layered honeycomb material YbCl$_{3}$ were investigated by electron spin resonance on single crystals. For in-plane and out-of-plane field orientations the $g$-factor shows a clear anisotropy ($g_\|=2.97(8)$ and $g_\bot =1.53(4)$), whereas the low temperature exchange coupling and the spin relaxation display a rather isotropic character. At elevated temperatures the contribution of the first excited crystal field level ($21\pm2$~meV) dominates the spin relaxation.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

Teaching with Learner Corpus Data

One type of resource that can facilitate teachers’ access to texts is the language corpus (plural corpora), which is defined as an electronically searchable collection of texts organized by text types and context representation, such as news articles, blog posts, dialogues, and others. While access to these texts provides teachers with an array of possible topics to inform both grammar and writing classes, it may be difficult to select texts that are appropriate to course content and students’ proficiency levels. In other words, texts from native-speaker corpora may lack examples of text types relevant to learners' proficiency levels as they are full of vocabulary and grammar that is unfamiliar to students, especially at the novice and intermediate levels. For this reason, we turn to learner corpora as an alternative. In this article, we discuss how to create corpus-informed activities using learner corpus data to teach language in context, facilitating analysis of grammar and writing in an integrated manner. First, we briefly discuss the basic elements of corpus search and their pedagogical applications. Then, we share a sample hands-off lesson created using the corpus Multilingual Academic Corpus of Assignments Writing and Speech (MACAWS), which contains written and oral assignments produced by students in the University of Arizona's Portuguese and Russian foreign language programs (Staples et al., 2019-, available at macaws.corporaproject.org). We hope that teachers use these examples as a springboard to expand this approach to other languages. To do so, we conclude by giving directions on where to find similar corpora resources and how to adapt these principles to their own contexts
