    Assessment of an Adaptive Efficient Thermal/Electric Skipping Control Strategy for the Management of a Parallel Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle

    In the current scenario, where environmental concern determines the evolution of passenger cars, hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) represent a hub in the automotive sector to reach net-zero CO2 emissions. To fully exploit the energy conversion potential of advanced powertrains, proper energy management strategies are mandatory. In this work, a simulation study is presented, aiming at developing a new control strategy for a P3 parallel plug-in HEV (PHEV). The simulation model is built on MATLAB/Simulink. The proposed strategy is based on an alternative utilization of the thermal engine and electric motor to provide the vehicle power demand (efficient thermal/electric skipping strategy (ETESS)). An adaptive function is then introduced to develop a charge-blended control strategy. Fuel consumption along different driving cycles is evaluated by applying the novel adaptive-ETESS (A-ETESS). To have a proper comparison, the same adaptive function is built on the equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS). Processor-in-the-loop (PIL) simulations are performed to benchmark the A-ETESS. Simulation results highlighted that the proposed strategy provides for a fuel economy similar to ECMS (worse of about 2.5% on average) and a computational effort reduced by 99% on average, opening the possibility of real-time on-vehicle applications

    Evaluation of Different LiDAR Technologies for the Documentation of Forgotten Cultural Heritage under Forest Environments

    In the present work, three LiDAR technologies (Faro Focus 3D X130—Terrestrial Laser Scanner, TLS-, Kaarta Stencil 2–16—Mobile mapping system, MMS-, and DJI Zenmuse L1—Airborne LiDAR sensor, ALS-) have been tested and compared in order to assess the performances in surveying built heritage in vegetated areas. Each of the mentioned devices has their limits of usability, and different methods to capture and generate 3D point clouds need to be applied. In addition, it has been necessary to apply a methodology to be able to position all the point clouds in the same reference system. While the TLS scans and the MMS data have been geo-referenced using a set of vertical markers and sphere measured by a GNSS receiver in RTK mode, the ALS model has been geo-referenced by the GNSS receiver integrated in the unmanned aerial system (UAS), which presents different characteristics and accuracies. The resulting point clouds have been analyzed and compared, focusing attention on the number of points acquired by the different systems, the density, and the nearest neighbor distance

    LIBS analysis to define the alteration processes on the surface of ancient stones: the case study of Romanesque medieval monuments (Italy)

    Weathering and bio-deterioration processes frequently affect the chromatic aspect of the stones used in the monuments. The surface alteration involves both physical modifications (e.g., increase of porosity) and chemical-mineralogical transformations of the rock, with formation of new secondary phases and deposition of the organic substances and inorganic solid phases (amorphous or crystalline particles). This research aims to study the surface films of stones (i.e., basalts, pyroclastic rocks, limestone, marbles) used in some historical-cultural relevant Sardinian Romanesque churches (XI-XIV sec.) using LIBS and XRD analysis. These latter, together with petrographic analysis by polarized light microscopy in thin section, are useful to reconstruct the micro-stratigraphic aspects of different film levels. The results highlight three different cases: i) chromatic alteration of the stone surface, ii) chemical-mineralogical alteration of stone with formation of coatings similar to the stone substrate, iii) chemical-mineralogical processes with the formation on the surface of secondary phases not related to the substrate, with the presence of Ca-oxalate (i.e. weddelite, whevellite). The presence of the Ca-oxalates, as noted in literature, is a testimony of application of organic substances on the surfaces themselves, with aesthetic purposes, to standardize or improve the color of the stone, or conservative, to limit the negative effects of weathering

    The solute carrier family 11 member A1 (SLC11A1) gene is associated with resistance to infectious diseases. Genetic variability at the 3’ untranslated region (3’-UTR) of this gene is due to the presence of a polymorphic microsatellites that contain a (GT) n dinucleotide repeat. The microsatellite variability and relationships with milk yield and composition, somatic cell count (SCC) and total microbic count (TMC) were investigated in 260 goats of Sarda breed. Genotyping of the upstream guanine-thymine repeat (GT)n revealed twenty different genotypes and eight alleles (GT11, GT12, GT14, GT15, GT16, GT17, GT18 and GT19). The present study confirmed the high genetic variability of the Sarda goat and that the genotype of the microsatellite at 3’-UTR SLC11A1 affected many chemical and hygienic characteristics of milk as fat, protein and SCC

    Current Options for Visualization of Local Deformation in Modern Shape Analysis Applied to Paleobiological Case Studies

    In modern shape analysis, deformation is quantified in different ways depending on the algorithms used and on the scale at which it is evaluated. While global affine and non-affine deformation components can be decoupled and computed using a variety of methods, the very local deformation can be considered, infinitesimally, as an affine deformation. The deformation gradient tensor F can be computed locally using a direct calculation by exploiting triangulation or tetrahedralization structures or by locally evaluating the first derivative of an appropriate interpolation function mapping the global deformation from the undeformed to the deformed state. A suitable function is represented by the thin plate spline (TPS) that separates affine from non-affine deformation components. F, also known as Jacobian matrix, encodes both the locally affine deformation and local rotation. This implies that it should be used for visualizing primary strain directions (PSDs) and deformation ellipses and ellipsoids on the target configuration. Using C = FTF allows, instead, one to compute PSD and to visualize them on the source configuration. Moreover, C allows the computation of the strain energy that can be evaluated and mapped locally at any point of a body using an interpolation function. In addition, it is possible, by exploiting the second-order Jacobian, to calculate the amount of the non-affine deformation in the neighborhood of the evaluation point by computing the body bending energy density encoded in the deformation. In this contribution, we present (i) the main computational methods for evaluating local deformation metrics, (ii) a number of different strategies to visualize them on both undeformed and deformed configurations, and (iii) the potential pitfalls in ignoring the actual three-dimensional nature of F when it is evaluated along a surface identified by a triangulation in three dimensions

    A cascade of 24 histatins (histatin 3 fragments) in human saliva. Suggestions for a pre-secretory sequential cleavage pathway

    The systematic search by tandem mass spectrometry of human saliva from four different subjects, of 136 possible fragments originated from histatin 3, allowed the detection of 24 different peptides. They include, with the exception of histatin 4, all the known histatin 3 fragments, namely histatins 5-12 and the peptides corresponding to 15-24, 26-32, 29-32 residues, and 13 new fragments corresponding to 1-11, 1-12, 1-13, 5-13, 6-11, 6-13, 7-11, 7-12, 7-13, 14-24, 14-25, 15-25, and 28-32 residues of histatin 3. On the contrary, none of 119 possible fragments of histatin 1, including histatin 2, was detected. The results suggest that the genesis of histatin 3-related peptides, being under the principal action of trypsin-like activities, is probably not a random process but rather follows a sequential fragmentation pathway. Lack of detection of C-terminal fragments, with the exception of 26-32, 28-32, and 29-32 fragments, suggested that arginine 25 should be the first cleavage site, generating histatin 6 and 26-32 fragments. The genesis of 28-32 and 29-32 fragments and histatin 5 should implicate a subsequent exo-protease action. Similarly, lack of detection of fragments having Lys-5 and Arg-6 at the N terminus and Arg-25 at the C terminus strongly suggested that sequences KRKF (11-14 residues) and AKR (4-6 residues) should be the second and the third cleavage sites, respectively. Lys-17 and Arg-22 are not cleaved at all

    Participants with Normal Weight or with Obesity Show Different Relationships of 6-n-Propylthiouracil (PROP) Taster Status with BMI and Plasma Endocannabinoids

    Reduced taste sensitivity to 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP), a genetic trait regarded as a general index for oral chemosensory perception, has been associated with a calorie-rich food preference and lower circulating endocannabinoid levels in participants with normal weight (NW), which suggests an adaptive mechanism to maintain a lean phenotype. In this study, we assessed whether participants with obesity (OB) show different patterns of plasma endocannabinoids and lipid metabolism biomarkers from those of NW, with further categorization based on their PROP sensitivity. NW and OB were classified by their PROP taster status as non-tasters (NT), medium-tasters (MT) and supertasters (ST). The blood samples were analysed for plasma endocannabinoids, nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) and retinol, which have been associated to metabolic syndrome. In OB, we found a higher BMI and lower circulating endocannabinoids in ST vs. OB NT. However, OB ST showed lower circulating NEFA and retinol levels, which suggested a more favourable lipid metabolism and body fat distribution than those of OB NT. We confirmed lower plasma endocannabinoid levels in NW NT than in NW ST. These data suggest that PROP taste sensitivity determines metabolic changes and ultimately body mass composition differently in OB and NW

    Broad-range potential of Asphodelus microcarpus leaves extract for drug development

    Background: Many plants have been used in traditional medicine for their antibacterial, antifungal, antiprotozoal, antiviral, antidiarrhoeal, analgesic, antimalarial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities. In order to find novel antimicrobial and antiviral agents, the aim of the present study was the evaluation of the antibacterial and antibiofilm susceptibility of Asphodelus microcarpus leaves extract. Moreover, the antiviral activity and the phytochemical composition of the active extract were also determined. Methods: Antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of leaves ethanol extract of A. microcarpus were evaluated on 13 different microbial strains. We selected three different sets of microorganisms: (i) Gram-positive bacteria, (ii) Gramnegative bacteria and (iii) yeasts. The potential antiviral activity of A. microcarpus leaves ethanol extract was evaluated with a luciferase reporter gene assay in which the dsRNA-dependent RIG-I-mediated IFN-β activation was inducted or inhibited by the Ebola virus VP35 protein. HPLC-DAD-MS was used to identify phenolic profile of the active extract. Results: A. microcarpus leaves extract showed a potent inhibitory activity on Gram-positive bacteria while only a reduced inhibition was observed on Gram-negative bacteria. No activity was detected against Yeasts. The extract also showed an interesting antibiofilm motif on various bacterial strains (E. coli, S. aureus, S. haemolyticus and B. clausii). Moreover, this extract significantly affected the Ebola virus VP35 inhibition of the viral RNA (vRNA) induced IFN response. Conclusions: The overall results provide supportive data on the use of A. microcarpus as antimicrobial agent and a potential source of anti-viral natural products. Data collected set the bases for further studies for the identification of single active components and the development of new pharmaceuticals

    Two novel PRNP truncating mutations broaden the spectrum of prion amyloidosis

    Truncating mutations in PRNP have been associated with heterogeneous phenotypes ranging from chronic diarrhea and neuropathy to dementia, either rapidly or slowly progressive. We identified novel PRNP stop-codon mutations (p.Y163X, p.Y169X) in two Italian kindreds. Disease typically presented in the third or fourth decade with progressive autonomic failure and diarrhea. Moreover, one proband (p.Y163X) developed late cognitive decline, whereas some of his relatives presented with isolated cognitive and psychiatric symptoms. Our results strengthen the link between PRNP truncating mutations and systemic abnormal PrP deposition and support a wider application of PRNP screening to include unsolved cases of familial autonomic neuropathy
