    Spectral energy dynamics in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence

    Spectral direct numerical simulations of incompressible MHD turbulence at a resolution of up to 102431024^3 collocation points are presented for a statistically isotropic system as well as for a setup with an imposed strong mean magnetic field. The spectra of residual energy, EkR=EkMEkKE_k^\mathrm{R}=|E_k^\mathrm{M}-E_k^\mathrm{K}|, and total energy, Ek=EkK+EkME_k=E^\mathrm{K}_k+E^\mathrm{M}_k, are observed to scale self-similarly in the inertial range as EkRk7/3E_k^\mathrm{R}\sim k^{-7/3}, Ekk5/3E_k\sim k^{-5/3} (isotropic case) and EkRk2E^\mathrm{R}_{k_\perp}\sim k_\perp^{-2}, Ekk3/2E_{k_\perp}\sim k_\perp^{-3/2} (anisotropic case, perpendicular to the mean field direction). A model of dynamic equilibrium between kinetic and magnetic energy, based on the corresponding evolution equations of the eddy-damped quasi-normal Markovian (EDQNM) closure approximation, explains the findings. The assumed interplay of turbulent dynamo and Alfv\'en effect yields EkRkEk2E_k^\mathrm{R}\sim k E^2_k which is confirmed by the simulations.Comment: accepted for publication by PR

    Another Chapter in the History of the European Invasion by the Western Conifer Seed Bug, Leptoglossus occidentalis: The Iberian Peninsula

    The Western conifer seed bug, Leptoglossus occidentalis, is native to North America and has already been considered a significant pest in several European countries since its first observation in Italy in 1999. In Spain and Portugal, it was recorded for the first time in 2003 and 2010, respectively, and its impact on Stone Pine (Pinus pinea) is of major concern. Before developing control measures for this insect pest, it is paramount to clarify its spatiotemporal dynamics of invasion. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to (a) characterise the genetic structure and diversity and (b) invasion pathways of L. occidentalis populations in the Iberian Peninsula. To do so, specimens of L. occidentalis were collected at fourteen sites widely distributed within the Iberian Peninsula. We used mtDNA sequences of Cytochrome b and eleven microsatellite markers to characterise the genetic diversity and the population structure in the Iberian Peninsula. Our genetic results combined with the observational dates strongly support a stratified expansion of L. occidentalis invasion in the Iberian Peninsula proceeding from multiple introductions, including at least one in Barcelona, one in Valencia, and one in the west coast or in the Southeastern region.Ana Farinha received support from Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia I.P.     Guidelines and framework to assess the feasibility of starting pre-emptive risk assessment of classical biological control agents

    Non-native invasive arthropod species threaten biodiversity and food security worldwide, resulting in substantial economic, environmental, social and cultural costs. Classical biological control (CBC) is regarded as a cost-effective component of integrated pest management programmes to manage invasive arthropod pests sustainably. However, CBC programmes are traditionally conducted once a pest has established in a new environment, and invariably all research needed to achieve approval to release a biological control agent can take several years. During that time, adverse impacts of the pest accelerate. A pre-emptive biocontrol approach will provide the opportunity to develop CBC for invasive pests before they arrive in the country at risk of introduction and therefore enhance preparedness. A critical aspect of this approach is that risk assessment is carried out in advance of the arrival of the pest. Implementing pre-emptive biocontrol risk assessment means that natural enemies can be selected, screened in containment or abroad and potentially pre-approved prior to a pest establishing in the country at risk, thus improving CBC effectiveness. However, such an approach may not always be feasible. This contribution defines the fundamental prerequisites, principles, and objectives of pre-emptive biocontrol risk assessment.     Comprehensive <i>in silico</i> and functional studies for classification of <i>EPAS1/HIF2A</i> genetic variants identified in patients with erythrocytosis

    Gain-of-function mutations in the EPAS1/HIF2A gene have been identified in patients with hereditary erythrocytosis that can be associated with the development of paraganglioma, pheochromocytoma and somatostatinoma. In the present study, we describe a unique European collection of 41 patients and 28 relatives diagnosed with an erythrocytosis associated with a germline genetic variant in EPAS1. In addition we identified two infants with severe erythrocytosis associated with a mosaic mutation present in less than 2% of the blood, one of whom later developed a paraganglioma. The aim of this study was to determine the causal role of these genetic variants, to establish pathogenicity, and to identify potential candidates eligible for the new hypoxia-inducible factor-2 α (HIF-2α) inhibitor treatment. Pathogenicity was predicted with in silico tools and the impact of 13 HIF-2b variants has been studied by using canonical and real-time reporter luciferase assays. These functional assays consisted of a novel edited vector containing an expanded region of the erythropoietin promoter combined with distal regulatory elements which substantially enhanced the HIF-2α-dependent induction. Altogether, our studies allowed the classification of 11 mutations as pathogenic in 17 patients and 23 relatives. We described four new mutations (D525G, L526F, G527K, A530S) close to the key proline P531, which broadens the spectrum of mutations involved in erythrocytosis. Notably, we identified patients with only erythrocytosis associated with germline mutations A530S and Y532C previously identified at somatic state in tumors, thereby raising the complexity of the genotype/phenotype correlations. Altogether, this study allows accurate clinical follow-up of patients and opens the possibility of benefiting from HIF-2α inhibitor treatment, so far the only targeted treatment in hypoxia-related erythrocytosis disease

    Epidemiology and outcome predictors in 450 patients with hanging-induced cardiac arrest: a retrospective study

    BackgroundCardiac arrest is the most life-threatening complication of attempted suicide by hanging. However, data are scarce on its characteristics and outcome predictors.MethodsThis retrospective observational multicentre study in 31 hospitals included consecutive adults admitted after cardiac arrest induced by suicidal hanging. Factors associated with in-hospital mortality were identified by multivariate logistic regression with multiple imputations for missing data and adjusted to the temporal trends over the study period.ResultsOf 450 patients (350 men, median age, 43 [34–52] years), 305 (68%) had a psychiatric history, and 31 (6.9%) attempted hanging while hospitalized. The median time from unhanging to cardiopulmonary resuscitation was 0 [0–5] min, and the median time to return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) was 20 [10–30] min. Seventy-nine (18%) patients survived to hospital discharge. Three variables were independently associated with higher in-hospital mortality: time from collapse or unhanging to ROSC&gt;20 min (odds ratio [OR], 4.71; 95% confidence intervals [95%CIs], 2.02–10.96; p = 0.0004); glycaemia &gt;1.4 g/L at admission (OR, 6.38; 95%CI, 2.60–15.66; p &lt; 0.0001); and lactate &gt;3.5 mmol/L at admission (OR, 6.08; 95%CI, 1.71–21.06; p = 0.005). A Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of &gt;5 at admission was associated with lower in-hospital mortality (OR, 0.009; 95%CI, 0.02–0.37; p = 0.0009).ConclusionIn patients with hanging-induced cardiac arrest, time from collapse or unhanging to return of spontaneous circulation, glycaemia, arterial lactate, and coma depth at admission were independently associated with survival to hospital discharge. Knowledge of these risk factors may help guide treatment decisions in these patients at high risk of hospital mortality
