Heart Rate Extraction from Novel Neck Photoplethysmography Signals.

This paper demonstrates for the first time how heart rate (HR) can be extracted from novel neck photoplethysmography (PPG). A novel algorithm is presented, which when tested in neck PPG signals recorded from 9 subjects at different respiratory rates, obtained good precision with respect to gold standard ECG signals. Mean absolute error (MAE), standard deviation error (SDAE) and root-mean-square error (RMSE) resulted in 1.22, 1.54 and 1.98 beats per minute (BPM), respectively. HRneck estimation showed strong correlation (R=0.94) with reference HRECG. Good agreement between both techniques was also demonstrated by Bland-Altman analysis. The bias between mean HR paired differences was -0.16 BPM and 95% limits of agreement (LoA) were (-4.7, 4.4). Comparatively, for widely used finger PPG, errors were slightly smaller (MAE=0.38 BPM, SDAE=0.48 BPM, RMSE=0.62BPM) and the correlation with reference ECG was also very close to 1 (R=0.99). Bias of -0.04 BPM and 95% LoA (-1.5, 1.4), also showed high degree of agreement. However, these findings show the potential the neck could have as an alternative body location for wearable monitors, aiming to reduce the number of sensing sites whilst still providing access to a wide variety of physiological parameters

The credibility of the Venezuela crawling-band system

This paper studies the credibility of the Venezuela crawling-band exchange rate regime during the period July, 1996-February, 2002. We show that, introducing some modifications, the credibility analysis widely applied to target zone regimes can also be used in studying the credibility of crawling- band regimes. In analyzing the credibility of the Venezuela crawling band, first we use the so-called simple credibility tests developed by Svensson (1991). Additionally, we estimate the expected rate of realignment using the drift- adjustment method. Cluster size entropy in the Axelrod model of social influence: small-world networks and mass media

We study the Axelrod's cultural adaptation model using the concept of cluster size entropy, $S_{c}$ that gives information on the variability of the cultural cluster size present in the system. Using networks of different topologies, from regular to random, we find that the critical point of the well-known nonequilibrium monocultural-multicultural (order-disorder) transition of the Axelrod model is unambiguously given by the maximum of the $S_{c}(q)$ distributions. The width of the cluster entropy distributions can be used to qualitatively determine whether the transition is first- or second-order. By scaling the cluster entropy distributions we were able to obtain a relationship between the critical cultural trait $q_c$ and the number $F$ of cultural features in regular networks. We also analyze the effect of the mass media (external field) on social systems within the Axelrod model in a square network. We find a new partially ordered phase whose largest cultural cluster is not aligned with the external field, in contrast with a recent suggestion that this type of phase cannot be formed in regular networks. La psicología humanística: historia, concepto y método

Resulta algo artificioso asignar una fecha concreta al momento preciso de la aparición histórica de la Psicologia Humanista. El largo periodo de gestación que lleva consigo la formación de cualquier fenómeno o movimiento científico y social convierte indefectiblemente en convencional toda pretensión de exactitud. Sin embargo, pueden tomarse como criterio cronológico aquellas fechas en las que se producen las primeras manifestaciones públicas o deliberadamente fundacionales. De acuerdo con este criterio, podemos hablar ya -en 1986- de 25 años de Psicologia Humanista

El problema de la posibilidad y fundamentación de la Psicología

Husserl (1859-1938) pertenece a aquella serie de filósofos que, como Kant o Comte, se han planteado de una manera explícita la posibilidad y la fundamentación de la psicología. No es de extrañar en el caso de Husserl quien, mientras estudiaba matemáticas, física y astronomía entre 1876 y 1878, siguió cursos de filosofía con Wundt en Leipzig, disciplina a la que unos años más tarde (1884-1886) se dedicó en cuerpo y alma bajo el magisterio de Brentano. Fue éste quien le recomendó a Stumpf para que se habilitase con él en Halle. El tema de la lección de prueba como Privatdozent desarrollada el 6 de julio de 1887 versó sobre El método fundamental en psicología. En ella se examinaba la contraversia existente en torno a la introspección (Wundt) y el experimento psicofísico (Volkelt). Después de catorce años de docencia en Halle (1887-1901), Husserl fue nombrado profesor extraordinario de la Universidad de Gottinga (1901-1916), gracias a las gestiones del propio Stumpf. Durante estos años se interesa por las publicaciones de Lipps y Meinong y por el conjunto de la obra de Dilthey, quien ejeció una gran influencia en su evolución posterior

Sartre y la psicología

Estando ya en la imprenta el presente número del Anuario, me llega la sugerencia de redactar una breve nota en memoria de Jean-Pau1 Sartre. Naturalmente se trata de evocar la obra de Sartre en relación a la Psicologia. Actualmente es posible cursar la carrera de Psicologia en cualquiera de nuestras Facultades sin haber hecho una sola referencia al autor o a su obra. No vamos a analizar ahora el porqué de esta omisión que afectaria igualmente a otros muchos autores marginados de la Psicologia Académica. Nos limitaremos a nuestro objetivo, esbozando unos pequeños apuntes, en la esperanza de poder ampliarlos en otra ocasión con mas detenimiento tal como Sartre y el tema 10 merecen
