    Ordenación forestal de masas mixtas de Pinus pinaster y Pinus radiata en Galicia

San Cibrao das Viñas (Ourense), 25 e 26 de maio de 2011, organizado por CIS Madera, TRAGSA, INIA, CTFC.En las masas forestales gallegas procedentes de repoblación es frecuente la presencia de masas mixtas de Pinus pinaster y Pinus radiata, en diferentes grados de mezcla. Se propone la ordenación forestal de un monte actualmente poblado por ambas especies, con mayores crecimientos en la zona de mezcla que en las masas puras. Se pretende incrementar el aprovechamiento maderero de Pinus radiata, que es la especie mayoritaria y que ha generado una producción elevada (10-27 metros cúbicos por hectárea y año a los 15-20 años de edad), en con condiciones de estación favorables. Los principales condicionantes que limitan las actuaciones son el grave riesgo de incendios en verano y la ausencia de intervenciones selvícolas en el pasado a las edades adecuadas. La extensión de la finca permite asumir como objetivo a largo plazo el logro del rendimiento sostenido. El carácter eminentemente productor de las masas de pino existentes ha conducido a la elección de criterios de cortabilidad financieros. Finalmente, la elevada fragmentación del vuelo, debido a la coexistencia de especies, edades y calidades de estación, ha llevado a la elección del método de ordenación por división por cabida, como marco dasocrático en el que planificar las sucesivas intervenciones

    En este proyecto, primero se realiza una pequeña introducción para que el lector adquiera unos conocimientos mínimos sobre las energías renovables. Posteriormente, se describe los conceptos básicos de la energía solar fotovoltaica y los materiales usados en la misma. La energía solar fotovoltaica, es una transformación de la energía luminosa en energía eléctrica. El material más utilizado en la fabricación de los paneles solares es el silicio. De igual forma, se describe conceptos básicos de la energía eólica y los materiales usados en la fabricación de los componentes que forman parte de este tipo de energía. En la energía eólica tiene lugar una transformación de la energía del viento en energía eléctrica. El elemento más importante es el aerogenerador, fabricado en materiales compuestos. Por otro lado, se estudia la viabilidad de instalar estas energías en países en vías de desarrollo. Para ello, se ha realizado el estudio de un caso real: la alimentación de una estación de emisión de televisión en Angola. Se han comparado tres tipos de energía: energía solar, energía eólica y energía convencional. Se ha hecho una comparación de las estimaciones presupuestarias y de las ventajas e inconvenientes de estas tres fuentes de energía, llegando a la conclusión de que la mejor elección será realizar una instalación de energía solar fotovoltaica.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In this project, first of all, a small introduction about the renewable energy is done. The main component is the turbine, manufactured with composites. All this has been applied in a real case in order to study the viability of install renewable energy in developing countries, like Angola. Three types of energy have been compared: solar photovoltaic, wind energy and conventional energy.     The Blockade of Tumoral IL1β-Mediated Signaling in Normal Colonic Fibroblasts Sensitizes Tumor Cells to Chemotherapy and Prevents Inflammatory CAF Activation

    Heterotypic interactions between newly transformed cells and normal surrounding cells define tumor's fate in incipient carcinomas. Once homeostasis has been lost, normal resident fibroblasts become carcinoma-associated fibroblasts, conferring protumorogenic properties on these normal cells. Here we describe the IL1 beta-mediated interplay between cancer cells and normal colonic myofibroblasts (NCFs), which bestows differential sensitivity to cytotoxic drugs on tumor cells. We used NCFs, their conditioned media (CM), and cocultures with tumor cells to characterize the IL1 beta-mediated crosstalk between both cell types. We silenced IL1 beta in tumor cells to demonstrate that such cells do not exert an influence on NCFs inflammatory phenotype. Our results shows that IL1 beta is overexpressed in cocultured tumor cells. IL1 beta enables paracrine signaling in myofibroblasts, converting them into inflammatory-CAFs (iCAF). IL1 beta-stimulated-NCF-CM induces migration and differential sensitivity to oxaliplatin in colorectal tumor cells. Such chemoprotective effect has not been evidenced for TGF beta 1-driven NCFs. IL1 beta induces the loss of a myofibroblastic phenotype in NCFs and acquisition of iCAF traits. In conclusion, IL1 beta-secreted by cancer cells modify surrounding normal fibroblasts to confer protumorogenic features on them, particularly tolerance to cytotoxic drugs. The use of IL1 beta-blocking agents might help to avoid the iCAF traits acquisition and consequently to counteract the protumorogenic actions these cells. Keyword

    Suicide rates and suicidal behaviour in displaced people: A systematic review

    Background Refugees, and other forcibly displaced people, face mental distress and may be disproportionately affected by risk factors for suicide. Little is known about suicidal behaviour in these highly mobile populations because collecting timely, relevant, and reliable data is challenging. Methods and findings A systematic review was performed to identify studies of any design reporting on suicide, suicide attempts, or suicidal ideation among populations of displaced people. A sensitive electronic database search was performed in August 2020, and all retrieved studies were screened for relevance by two authors. Studies were categorised by the population being evaluated: refugees granted asylum, refugees living in temporary camps, asylum seekers, or internally displaced people. We distinguished between whether the sampling procedure in the studies was likely to be representative, or the sample examined a specific non-representative subgroup of displaced people (such as those already diagnosed with mental illness). Data on the rates of suicide or the prevalence of suicide attempts or suicidal ideation were extracted by one reviewer and verified by a second reviewer from each study and converted to common metrics. After screening 4347 articles, 87 reports of 77 unique studies were included. Of these, 53 were studies in representative samples, and 24 were based on samples of specific target populations. Most studies were conducted in high-income countries, and the most studied population subgroup was refugees granted asylum. There was substantial heterogeneity across data sources and measurement instruments utilised. Sample sizes of displaced people ranged from 33 to 196,941 in studies using general samples. Suicide rates varied considerably, from 4 to 290 per 100,000 person-years across studies. Only 8 studies were identified that compared suicide rates with the host population. The prevalence of suicide attempts ranged from 0.14% to 15.1% across all studies and varied according to the prevalence period evaluated. Suicidal ideation prevalence varied from 0.17% to 70.6% across studies. Among refugees granted asylum, there was evidence of a lower risk of suicide compared with the host population in 4 of 5 studies. In contrast, in asylum seekers there was evidence of a higher suicide risk in 2 of 3 studies, and of a higher risk of suicidal ideation among refugees living in camps in 2 of 3 studies compared to host populations. Conclusion While multiple studies overall have been published in the literature on this topic, the evidence base is still sparse for refugees in camps, asylum seekers, and internally displaced people. Less than half of the included studies reported on suicide or suicide attempt outcomes, with most reporting on suicidal ideation. International research networks could usefully define criteria, definitions, and study designs to help standardise and facilitate more research in this important area

    Increasing the genetic diagnosis yield in inherited retinal dystrophies: assigning pathogenicity to novel non-canonical splice site variants

    Aims: We aimed to validate the pathogenicity of genetic variants identified in inherited retinal dystrophy (IRD) patients, which were located in non-canonical splice sites (NCSS). Methods: After next generation sequencing (NGS) analysis (target gene panels or whole exome sequencing (WES)), NCSS variants were prioritized according to in silico predictions. In vivo and in vitro functional tests were used to validate their pathogenicity. Results: Four novel NCSS variants have been identified. They are located in intron 33 and 34 of ABCA4 (c.4774-9G>A and c.4849-8C>G, respectively), intron 2 of POC1B (c.101-3T>G) and intron 3 of RP2 (c.884-14G>A). Functional analysis detected different aberrant splicing events, including intron retention, exon skipping and intronic nucleotide addition, whose molecular effect was either the disruption or the elongation of the open reading frame of the corresponding gene. Conclusions: Our data increase the genetic diagnostic yield of IRD patients and expand the landscape of pathogenic variants, which will have an impact on the genotype-phenotype correlations and allow patients to opt for the emerging gene and cell therapies

    Mobile technologies to support healthcare provider to healthcare provider communication and management of care

    Background: The widespread use of mobile technologies can potentially expand the use of telemedicine approaches to facilitate communication between healthcare providers, this might increase access to specialist advice and improve patient health outcomes. Objectives: To assess the effects of mobile technologies versus usual care for supporting communication and consultations between healthcare providers on healthcare providers' performance, acceptability and satisfaction, healthcare use, patient health outcomes, acceptability and satisfaction, costs, and technical difficulties. Search methods: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase and three other databases from 1 January 2000 to 22 July 2019. We searched clinical trials registries, checked references of relevant systematic reviews and included studies, and contacted topic experts. Selection criteria: Randomised trials comparing mobile technologies to support healthcare provider to healthcare provider communication and consultations compared with usual care. Data collection and analysis: We followed standard methodological procedures expected by Cochrane and EPOC. We used the GRADE approach to assess the certainty of the evidence. Main results: We included 19 trials (5766 participants when reported), most were conducted in high-income countries. The most frequently used mobile technology was a mobile phone, often accompanied by training if it was used to transfer digital images. Trials recruited participants with different conditions, and interventions varied in delivery, components, and frequency of contact. We judged most trials to have high risk of performance bias, and approximately half had a high risk of detection, attrition, and reporting biases. Two studies reported data on technical problems, reporting few difficulties. Mobile technologies used by primary care providers to consult with hospital specialists. We assessed the certainty of evidence for this group of trials as moderate to low. Mobile technologies:. - probably make little or no difference to primary care providers following guidelines for people with chronic kidney disease (CKD; 1 trial, 47 general practices, 3004 participants);. - probably reduce the time between presentation and management of individuals with skin conditions, people with symptoms requiring an ultrasound, or being referred for an appointment with a specialist after attending primary care (4 trials, 656 participants);. - may reduce referrals and clinic visits among people with some skin conditions, and increase the likelihood of receiving retinopathy screening among people with diabetes, or an ultrasound in those referred with symptoms (9 trials, 4810 participants when reported);. - probably make little or no difference to patient-reported quality of life and health-related quality of life (2 trials, 622 participants) or to clinician-assessed clinical recovery (2 trials, 769 participants) among individuals with skin conditions;. - may make little or no difference to healthcare provider (2 trials, 378 participants) or participant acceptability and satisfaction (4 trials, 972 participants) when primary care providers consult with dermatologists;. - may make little or no difference for total or expected costs per participant for adults with some skin conditions or CKD (6 trials, 5423 participants). Mobile technologies used by emergency physicians to consult with hospital specialists about people attending the emergency department. We assessed the certainty of evidence for this group of trials as moderate. Mobile technologies:. - probably slightly reduce the consultation time between emergency physicians and hospital specialists (median difference −12 minutes, 95% CI −19 to −7; 1 trial, 345 participants);. - probably reduce participants’ length of stay in the emergency department by a few minutes (median difference −30 minutes, 95% CI −37 to −25; 1 trial, 345 participants). We did not identify trials that reported on providers' adherence, participants’ health status and well-being, healthcare provider and participant acceptability and satisfaction, or costs. Mobile technologies used by community health workers or home-care workers to consult with clinic staff. We assessed the certainty of evidence for this group of trials as moderate to low. Mobile technologies:. - probably make little or no difference in the number of outpatient clinic and community nurse consultations for participants with diabetes or older individuals treated with home enteral nutrition (2 trials, 370 participants) or hospitalisation of older individuals treated with home enteral nutrition (1 trial, 188 participants);. - may lead to little or no difference in mortality among people living with HIV (RR 0.82, 95% CI 0.55 to 1.22) or diabetes (RR 0.94, 95% CI 0.28 to 3.12) (2 trials, 1152 participants);. - may make little or no difference to participants' disease activity or health-related quality of life in participants with rheumatoid arthritis (1 trial, 85 participants);. - probably make little or no difference for participant acceptability and satisfaction for participants with diabetes and participants with rheumatoid arthritis (2 trials, 178 participants). We did not identify any trials that reported on providers' adherence, time between presentation and management, healthcare provider acceptability and satisfaction, or costs. Authors' conclusions: Our confidence in the effect estimates is limited. Interventions including a mobile technology component to support healthcare provider to healthcare provider communication and management of care may reduce the time between presentation and management of the health condition when primary care providers or emergency physicians use them to consult with specialists, and may increase the likelihood of receiving a clinical examination among participants with diabetes and those who required an ultrasound. They may decrease the number of people attending primary care who are referred to secondary or tertiary care in some conditions, such as some skin conditions and CKD.     Lifetime exposure to brominated trihalomethanes in drinking water and swimming pool attendance are associated with chronic lymphocytic leukemia: a Multicase-Control Study in Spain (MCC-Spain)

    Background: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) etiology is poorly understood, and carcinogenic chemicals in drinking and recreational water are candidates. Objective: To evaluate the association between drinking-water exposure to trihalomethanes (THMs) and nitrate as well as lifetime swimming pool attendance and CLL. Methods: During 2010-2013, hospital-based CLL cases and population-based controls were recruited in Spain, providing information on residential histories, type of water consumed and swimming pool attendance. Average THMs and nitrate levels in drinking water were linked to lifetime water consumption. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using mixed models. Results: Final samples for residential tap water analyses and swimming pool attendance analyses were 144 cases/1230 controls and 157 cases/1240 controls, respectively. Mean (SD) values for average lifetime residential brominated THMs and chloroform in tap water (μg/L), and ingested nitrate (mg/day) were 48.1 (35.6), 18.5 (6.7) and 13.7 (9.6) respectively in controls; and 72.9 (40.7), 17.9 (5.4), and 14.1 (8.8) in CLL cases. For each 10 μg/L increase of brominated THMs and chloroform lifetime-average levels, the ORs (95% CI) were 1.22 (1.14, 1.31) and 0.54 (0.34, 0.87), respectively. For each 5 mg/day increase of ingested nitrate, the OR of CLL was 0.91 (0.80, 1.04). The OR of lifetime pool users (vs. non-users) was 2.38 (1.61, 3.52). Upon performing annual frequency of attending pools analysis through categorization, the second and third categories showed an ORs of 2.36 (1.49, 3.72) and 2.40 (1.51, 3.83), respectively, and P-trend of 0.001. Impact statement: This study identifies an association of long-term exposure to THMs in drinking water, at concentrations below the regulatory thresholds and WHO guidelines, and swimming pool attendance, with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). These unprecedented findings are highly relevant since CLL is an incurable cancer with still unknown etiology and because the widespread exposure to chlorination by-products that remain in drinking and recreational water worldwide. Despite the demonstrated carcinogenicity in animals of several chlorination by-products, little is known about their potential risks on human health.
