With Gordon, Kitchener and Others in the Sudan: Mapping Fictional Engagement with the Imperial Frontier

The protracted military engagement in the Sudan (1884-1899) can be regarded as the most iconic among the “little wars” late-Victorian Britain fought on its imperial frontiers. Numberless historical studies have addressed its events, its protagonists, its politics, and aspects of its immense discursive fallout. In recent years, its impact on popular literature has been discussed, most notably, in connection with the “paranoid imaginary” underlying “Imperial Gothic” fictions, with fantasies of retaliatory invasions and reverse colonization. On the other hand, as a fictional corpus, the adventure narratives inspired more directly by the military events and the concomitant political debate have not attracted attention. Having identified ten novels – written between 1885 and 1907, all at least partly set in the Sudan – I set out to outline the development of this strain of historical/military adventure over roughly two decades, highlighting its narrative strategies in articulating the changing perception of the conflict. In order to do so, I focus on the novelists’ selection, or evasion, of historical “facts,” the intertwining of the factual strain of adventure fiction with the conventions of the quest romance, and the uses of their often multiple protagonists. I also foreground aspects of divergence as well as of consonance between the children’ novels and those written for the general public, showing how they experimented with varying narrative takes on the same highly topical subject-matter

In Disraeli’s Lothair (1870), towards the end of the novel, and as part of his Bildung, the eponymous aristocratic protagonist undertakes a Mediterranean voyage, which includes landing on a beautiful fictional Greek island owned by a fashionable Hellenising painter aptly named Mr Phoebus. This essay highlights the biographical, political and cultural contexts mobilized by Lothair’s voyage and Mr Phoebus’s island, especially investigating the Mr Phoebus-Frederic Leighton connection, and finally underscoring Disraeli’s complex take on nineteenth-century Hellenism and neopaganism, as – on the one hand – a politically engag\ue9 artistic trend, connected with republicanism and the revolutionary spirit pervading Europe at mid-century, and – on the other hand – as a crucial component of the much tamer “aesthetic movement” that would soon be associated with Pater and the late Victorian literary and artistic avant-gard

Papillomavirus from the bench to the clinics

[Excerpt] Human papillomavirus (HPV) represents an exciting subject of study because it is currently established as an essential etiological factor of uterine cervical cancer and strongly implicated in the development of other genital cancers as well, in addition to benign genital warts. Additionally, substantial amount of new data have been elaborated linking HPV with head and neck cancer and, more tentatively, also with esophageal, breast, prostate, and lung cancers. Despite the existing controversies, the possible link of HPV infection with these nongenital carcinomas opens a new fascinating era of HPV research. [...

This paper aims to present an historical point of view and precisely exposes the reasons why the need for terminology has developed and gradually increased, without it nullifying the ability of scientists to invent words with freedom and imagination, sometimes even taking inspiration from literature, such as particle physicist Murray Gell-Mann (Nobel laureate 1969), who, for “quark”, was inspired by a passage from Joyce's Finnegans Wake

CCSD(T) study of the far-infrared spectrum of ethyl methyl ether

10 pages, 5 figures, 9 tables.Band positions and intensities for the far-infrared bands of ethyl methyl ether are variationally determined from a three-dimensional (3D) potential energy surface calculated with CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ theory. For this purpose, the energies of 181 selected geometries computed optimizing 3n−9 parameters are fitted to a 3D Fourier series depending on three torsional coordinates. The zero point vibrational energy correction and the search of a correct definition of the methyl torsional coordinate are taken into consideration for obtaining very accurate frequencies. In addition, second order perturbation theory is applied on the two molecular conformers, trans and cis-gauche, in order to test the validity of the 3D model. Consequently, a new assignment of previous experimental bands, congruent with the new ab initio results, is proposed. For the most stable trans-conformer, the 30, 29, and 28 fundamental transitions, computed at 115.3, 206.5, and 255.2 cm−1, are correlated with the observed bands at 115.4, 202, and 248 cm−1. For the cis-gauche the three band positions are computed at 91.0, 192.5, and 243.8 cm−1. Calculations on the −d3 isotopomer confirm our assignment. Intensities are determined at room temperature and at 10 K. Structural parameters, potential energy barriers, anharmonic frequencies for the 3n−9 neglected modes, and rotational parameters (rotational and centrifugal distortion constants), are also provided. This work has also been supported by the Ministerio de Educación of Spain, Grant No. AYA2005-00702 Plan Nacional I+D+I 2004–2007 , CONACYT of Mexico, Grant No. 58728 CoNaCYT, and Computing resources of CESGA.Peer reviewe

Get PDF

The objective of the present investigation was to design an educational intervention strategy on contraceptive methods in young adult women, aged 20 to 39 years, with preconception risk. A descriptive cross - sectional study was carried out in the universe of 49 young adult women with preconceptional risk of the María Auxiliadora community, Yaruquíes Parish, Riobamba City. An interview with questionnaire validated by experts was applied. Statistical program for the Social Sciences SPSS and Fisher's test were used for the relationship between variables, considering statistically significant p <0.05. In the group studied, women aged 35 to 39 years predominated 36.7%, with 1 to 2 pregnancies 34.7%, secondary education level 44.9%, female workers 55.1%, couples 91.8% and 67,3% Catholic. Health personnel 38.8% were the main source of information. They used contraceptive 26.5%, being the implant the most frequent 38,5%. They had unsatisfactory knowledge about contraceptive methods 75.5%. By dimensions, unsatisfactory knowledge predominated with the exception of the concept of contraception. The relationship was significant between knowledge and current use of contraceptive p = 0.025, between concept of contraception dimension with: age p = 0.026, number of pregnancies p = 0.020 and level of education p = 0.014 and between dimension types of contraceptive methods and level of instruction p=0.028. It is concluded that knowledge about contraceptive methods is not satisfactory, suggesting the need to implement the educational strategy designed from the results of the study, which may play an important role in increasing knowledge and practice of contraception in this group of high reproductive risk
