Tramp Novae Between Galaxies in the Fornax Cluster: Tracers of Intracluster Light
We report the results of a survey for novae in and between the galaxies of
the Fornax cluster. Our survey provides strong evidence that intracluster novae
exist and that they provide a useful, independent measure of the intracluster
light in Fornax. We discovered six strong nova candidates in six distinct
epochs spanning eleven years from 1993 to 2004. The data were taken with the 4m
and the 1.5m telescopes at CTIO. The spatial distribution of the nova
candidates is consistent with 16-41% of the total light in the cluster
being in the intracluster light, based on the ratio of the number of novae we
discovered in intracluster space over the total number of novae discovered plus
a simple completeness correction factor. This estimate is consistent with
independent measures of intracluster light in Fornax and Virgo using
intracluster planetary nebulae. The accuracy of the intracluster light
measurement improves with each survey epoch as more novae are discovered.Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical

EV market development pathways - An application of System Dynamics for policy simulation
The transport sector, in particular road transport, is a major consumer of energy and a major source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, contributing to climate change. There is increasing pressure to reduce CO2 emissions from passenger cars (e.g. in the EU, the Regulation (EC) No 443/2009 sets the limit of CO2 emissions of new passenger cars to 95 g of CO2 from 2020 [1]). Today, the global vehicle stock has more than 1 billion units and relies almost entirely on oil-based energy. According to various projections, the global vehicle fleet could double or even triple by 2050. The energy and environmental implications of such increase would not be negligible. In this context, it is argued that the electrification of the global vehicle fleet emerges as a desirable goal. Electric vehicles (EVs) are expected to help meet key energy and environmental goals, leading to a decrease in oil imports, an increase in energy independency and to a decrease in CO2 emissions.
This paper focuses on the EV market penetration in key OECD countries as well as in China and India, considering various vehicle technologies for passenger light-duty vehicles (PLDVs). In particular, the paper investigates the impacts of EVs on oil demand and CO2 emissions in the countries of interest under various scenarios until 2050. For this purpose, a System Dynamics (SD) model is developed and the results of various simulations assessed. The output of the model includes possible future market shares of EVs as well as their specific energy and environmental impacts. Our results show to what extent EVs can potentially contribute to reduce oil dependency andCO2 emissions in the countries analysed beyond 2030
Quantifying the factors influencing people’s car type choices in Europe: Results of a stated preference survey
This study aims at tracking the evolution of the attitude of car drivers towards electro-mobility. The results of a new survey conducted in six European countries are shown. The purchase price continues to represent the major hurdle to widespread adoption of zero tailpipe emission cars.JRC.C.4-Sustainable Transpor

OBJECTIVES: To determine the levels and assessment of self-care in diabetic patients in three hospitals in Ucayali during 2017. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Analytical cross-sectional study, conducted in three hospitals in Ucayali during 2017 with a sample size of 572 participants through a stratified random sampling. A self-administered survey was applied that evaluated the general characteristics, the Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire 24 (DQK-24), the patient's attitude by the Diabetes Attitude Scale (DAS-3) and Summary of Diabetes Self Care Activities Measure (SDSCA) which mediates self-care practices. RESULTS: From 572 patients, 50.8% being women, with the median age of 47 years (RIQ: 35-56). Hypertension (22.4%) was the most frequent comorbidity. Also, having an adequate knowledge about their disease (RPa: 2.47; 95% CI: 13.5-4.50), strict control (RPa: 1.34; 95% CI: 1.09-1.65) predispose adherence in their diet. The need for some special training (RPa: 1.23; 95% CI: 1.03-1.47), the perception of the severity in their illness (RPa: 1.25; 95% CI: 1.02-1.55) and have autonomy (RPa: 1.35; 95% CI : 1.12-1.64) predisposed to taste your blood sugar. CONCLUSIONS: More than half of the patients performed inadequate self-care activities, knowledge about their disease and strict control influence the patient's diet, as well as special training, perceive the severity of their disease and be autonomous drives the realization of taste blood sugar.OBJETIVOS: Determinar los niveles y la valoración del autocuidado en pacientes diabéticos en tres hospitales de la región de Ucayali durante el 2017.
Energy Use and Emissions Impacts from Car Technologies Market Scenarios: A Multi-Country System Dynamics Model
In the context of high energy use and greenhouse gas emissions from road passenger transport, the prospects of market diffusion of new car technologies is at present time uncertain. For instance, the impact of current oil prices on the market uptake of electric vehicles is yet to be seen. Systems thinking and scenario analysis are useful to explore possible future outcomes. This paper focuses on car technologies scenarios for the Chinese, German and US markets until 2030. The technologies investigated are: gasoline, diesel, flexi-fuel, liquefied petroleum gas, natural gas, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric and fuel cell vehicles. Based on the System Dynamics approach, a model integrating discrete choice and accounting frameworks is developed. The developed System Dynamics model is applied to examine alternative policies and to estimate energy use and emissions in each of the markets under various scenarios. The model results illustrate the importance of taking indirect emissions into account. In conclusion, simulated policies sensibly alter car technology uptake and have an impact on the environment. Finally, the ideas of feedback process and expansion of model boundaries are considered to be crucial in modeling such a complex and uncertain system
