The Spanish transition from classical Liberalism to Democracy

Wetting response of KrF laser ablated polyimide surfaces
The wettability of polyimide surfaces microstructured using KrF laser radiation at fluences above the material ablation threshold was studied by static contact angle measurements. The laser-treated surfaces present a morphology consisting of conical features whose dimensions and areal density depend on the fluence. The effect of these parameters on the surface apparent contact angle depends on the wetting regime. When wetting occurs in the homogeneous regime, the apparent contact angle of the treated surfaces increases with the radiation fluence because the cone dimensions increase. In contrast, when wetting occurs in the heterogeneous regime, the apparent contact angle increases with the radiation fluence because the average distance between cones increases. The apparent water contact angle of the laser-treated surfaces can reach values as high as 162 degrees, as compared to 75 degrees for virgin polyimide
Noise suppression by noise
We have analyzed the interplay between an externally added noise and the
intrinsic noise of systems that relax fast towards a stationary state, and
found that increasing the intensity of the external noise can reduce the total
noise of the system. We have established a general criterion for the appearance
of this phenomenon and discussed two examples in detail.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Stochastic Resonance in Noisy Non-Dynamical Systems
We have analyzed the effects of the addition of external noise to
non-dynamical systems displaying intrinsic noise, and established general
conditions under which stochastic resonance appears. The criterion we have
found may be applied to a wide class of non-dynamical systems, covering
situations of different nature. Some particular examples are discussed in
detail.Comment: 4 pages, RevTex, 3 PostScript figures available upon reques
Encontre interdisciplinari. Malaltia i cultura/Disease and culture
The first of these conferences was held in Valencia on the 17-18th June 1994 taking as a subject of discussion the relations between Disease and Culture. A selected group of fourteen specialists in the fields of anthropology, social history, demography, paleopathology and history of science and medicine from the universities of Oxford, Bologna, Pavia, Venezia, Valencia, Alacant, Autonoma de Barcelona, Granada and Tarragona joined in the Palau de Pineda, site of the Universidad Internacional Menendez y Pelayo. The meeting was coordinated by Josep Lluls Barona with the collaboration of the Department of History of Science (Universitat de Valencia), Universidad Internacional Menendez Pelayo, The British Council and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura. Thirty postgraduate students and professors from eight Spanish universities attended the conference
Prosociality and life satisfaction: a daily-diary investigation among Spanish university students
With a diary study, we tested the positive effect of prosociality on life satisfaction. Fifty-six Spanish undergraduate students (45 females; Mage = 21.08 years) rated their life satisfaction, prosociality, self-esteem, and physical appearance for 5 consecutive days. Multilevel results indicated that within-individual positive deviations in prosociality (i.e., behaving more prosocial than usual) were uniquely and significantly associated with higher life satisfaction on that specific day. Students’ self-esteem, physical appearance, and positive daily events were also predictive of life satisfaction. Exploratory analyses revealed that the positive effect of prosociality on life satisfaction was significant only for those students with low or medium levels of satisfaction with their physical appearance. The findings are discussed in relation to the individual determinants of subjective well-being during early adulthood
Noise and Periodic Modulations in Neural Excitable Media
We have analyzed the interplay between noise and periodic modulations in a
mean field model of a neural excitable medium. To this purpose, we have
considered two types of modulations; namely, variations of the resistance and
oscillations of the threshold. In both cases, stochastic resonance is present,
irrespective of if the system is monostable or bistable.Comment: 13 pages, RevTex, 5 PostScript figure
