    Chemical solution synthesis and ferromagnetic resonance of epitaxial thin films of yttrium iron garnet

    We report the fabrication of epitaxial Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) thin films on Gd3Ga5O12 (111) using a chemical solution method. Cubic YIG is a ferrimagnetic material at room temperature, with excellent magneto-optical properties, high electrical resistivity, and a very narrow ferromagnetic resonance, which makes it particularly suitable for applications in filters and resonators at microwave frequencies. But these properties depend on the precise stoichiometry and distribution of Fe3+ ions among the octahedral/tetrahedral sites of a complex structure, which hampered the production of high-quality YIG thin films by affordable chemical methods. Here we report the chemical solution synthesis of YIG thin films, with excellent chemical, crystalline, and magnetic homogeneity. The films show a very narrow ferromagnetic resonance (long spin relaxation time), comparable to that obtained from high-vacuum physical deposition methods. These results demonstrate that chemical methods can compete to develop nanometer-thick YIG films with the quality required for spintronic devices and other high-frequency applications

    Spin-to-charge conversion using Rashba coupling at the interface between non-magnetic materials

    The Rashba effect is an interaction between the spin and the momentum of electrons induced by the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in surface or interface states. Its potential for conversion between charge and spin currents has been theoretically predicted but never clearly demonstrated for surfaces or interfaces of metals. Here we present experiments evidencing a large spin-charge conversion by the Bi/Ag Rashba interface. We use spin pumping to inject a spin current from a NiFe layer into a Bi/Ag bilayer and we detect the resulting charge current. As the charge signal is much smaller (negligible) with only Bi (only Ag), the spin-to-charge conversion can be unambiguously ascribed to the Rashba coupling at the Bi/Ag interface. This result demonstrates that the Rashba effect at interfaces can be used for efficient charge-spin conversion in spintronics

    Mining gradual dependencies with variation strength

    In this paper we propose a definition of gradual dependence as a fuzzy association rule. Gradual dependencies represent tendencies in the variation of the degree of fulfilment of properties in a set of objects. We define the degree of variation of a certain imprecise property for a pair of objects as the difference between their membership degrees to the fuzzy set defining the property. When considering a transaction for every pair of objects and considering items representing positive and negative variations foer each property of interest, fuzzy association rules become gradual dependencies and the accuray and support of the former can be employed to assess the corresponding dependencies. We study the new semantics and properties of the resulting fuzzy gradual dependence, and we propose a way to adapt existing fuzzy association rule mining algorithms for the new task of mining such dependenciesPeer Reviewe

    Dysregulation of photosynthetic genes in oceanic Prochlorococcus populations exposed to organic pollutants

    The impact of organic pollutants on oceanic ecosystem functioning is largely unknown. Prochlorococcus, the most abundant known photosynthetic organism on Earth, has been suggested to be especially sensible to exposure to organic pollutants, but the sub-lethal effects of organic pollutants on its photosynthetic function at environmentally relevant concentrations and mixtures remain unexplored. Here we show the modulation of the expression of two photosynthetic genes, rbcL (RuBisCO large subunit) and psbA (PSII D1 protein), of oceanic populations of Prochlorococcus from the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans when exposed to mixtures of organic pollutants consisting of the non-polar fraction of a seawater extract. This mixture included most persistent organic pollutants, semivolatile aromatic-like compounds, and the unresolved complex mixture of hydrocarbons. Prochlorococcus populations in the controls showed the expected diel cycle variations in expression of photosynthetic genes. However, exposure to a complex mixture at concentrations only 2-fold above the environmental levels resulted in a decrease of expression of both genes, suggesting an effect on the photosynthetic function. While organic pollutant effects on marine phytoplankton have been already demonstrated at the cellular level, this is the first field study showing alterations at the molecular level of the photosynthetic function due to organic pollutants.Versión del edito

    Se presenta el caso de un varón de 85 años que ingresó por dolor abdominal e ictericia, por lo cual se le realizaron diversas exploraciones, apreciandose en 2ª porción duodenal una masa cuyo estudio histológico demostró que se trataba de un paraganglioma gangliocítico duodenal. Se describen las características clínicas de este infrecuente tumor y revisamos su diagnóstico y tratamiento. We present the case of an 85 year old male who was admitted to hospital with abdominal pain and jaundice. Different explorations were performed for this reason, with a mass observed in his 2nd duodenal portion. Histiological study showed that it was a duodenal gangliocytic paraganlioma. The clinical characteristics of this infrequent tumour are described and we review the diagnosis and treatment

    Placebo-controlled trial of nimodipine in the treatment of acute ischemic cerebral infarction

    Nimodipine is a 1,4-dihydropyridine derivative that shows a preferential cerebrovascular activity in experimental animals. Clinical data suggest that nimodipine has a beneficial effect on the neurologic outcome of patients suffering an acute ischemic stroke. Our double-blind placebo-controlled multicenter trial was designed to assess the effects of oral nimodipine on the mortality rate and neurologic outcome of patients with an acute ischemic stroke. One hundred sixty-four patients were randomly allocated to receive either nimodipine tablets (30 mg q.i.d.) or identical placebo tablets for 28 days. Treatment was always started less than or equal to 48 hours after the acute event. The Mathew Scale, slightly modified by Gelmers et al, was used for neurologic assessment. Mortality rate and neurologic outcome after 28 days were used as evaluation criteria. We considered 123 patients to be valid for the analysis of efficacy. Mortality rates did not differ significantly between groups. Neurologic outcome after 28 days of therapy did not differ between groups. However, when only those patients most likely to benefit from any intervention (Mathew Scale sum score of less than or equal to 65 at baseline) were analyzed separately in post hoc-defined subgroups, the nimodipine-treated subgroups showed a significantly better neurologic outcome. This result suggests that some patients with acute ischemic stroke will benefit from treatment with nimodipine tablets

    The TechnoFusion Consortium of Spanish institutions and facilities towards the development of fusion materials and related technologies in Europe

    14 pags., 10 figs.With the objective of contributing to the European development of materials, technologies and facilities for the demonstration of the thermonuclear fusion, the construction of the unique TechnoFusión facility was planned in 2009. The TechnoFusión consortium, formed by selected Spanish research groups and laboratories located in Madrid, has jointly advanced in the search for solutions to the remaining technological issues of nuclear fusion by magnetic and inertial confinement. In addition, the foundation of the TechnoFusión partnership has been essential to create a network of collaborations, and also to expand and specialize human resources, by training scientists and technical staff in the use of high-tech tools. Supported by the TechnoFusión_Comunidad Madrid (III) regional programme, the consortium is focused on providing support for the construction of medium-­sized, relevant facilities in Madrid (Spain).     Empirical leucine-to-carbon conversion factors for estimating heterothrophic bacterial production in surface waters of the world oceans

    Comunicación oralBacterial biomass production is a key parameter for evaluating the role of bacterioplankton in ocean carbon cycling. However, bacterial production cannot be directly measured and is typically estimated from the incorporation rates of radiolabelled leucine. The conversion of leucine uptake rates into bacterial carbon production rates requires the use of conversion factors (CFs) which must be empirically determined. Despite the empirical leucine-to-carbon CFs vary widely across environments very little is known about its potential controlling factors. We conducted a set of 10 surface seawater cultures experiments where the growth of the natural bacterial assemblage was promoted by filtration (removal of grazers) or by both filtration and dilution. Sampling stations were located between 30 ºN and 30 ºS, including the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. CFs varied from 0.13 to 1.47 Kg C mol Leu-1, being higher in the filtrated than in the filtrated and diluted treatment. The abundance of picocyanobacteria explained 60% of the observed variability. Our results further suggest that the composition of bacterioplankton, as assessed by ARISA fingerprinting, may partially explain the observed variation in CFs
