Optimized exploitation of aquifers: application to the Querenca-Silves aquifer system

    Get PDF
A great deal of optimization models have been developed to support aquifer planning and management with the goal of arriving at the best decisions in relation to the number and siting of infrastructures to be built and how to operate them. A mixed-integer multi-objective linear model has been taken from the literature to define the best decision for the development of the aquifer of Querenca-Silves (Portugal). It identifies efficient solutions for the location and design of pumping stations and their catchment area to supply a given number of demand centers, without disregarding the effect of groundwater management on the piezometric surface of aquifers and the many facets of groundwater management. The multi-objective model includes two objectives: (1) the minimization of aggregate water elevation height, and (2) the minimization of aggregate water transport length, weighted by the flows conveyed from the facilities to the centers. The effect of groundwater extraction on the piezometric surface of the aquifer is modelled with a response matrix method, with the establishment of maximum drawdown to prevent over-exploitation

An overview of the occurrence of species of the genus Bursaphelenchus in Romania is presented. The data is based on recent surveys conducted for the first time throughout the country, to monitor and evaluate the potential entry of the pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. Wood samples were collected from declining trees, woodprocessing companies and imported wood packaging material. Of the 895 wood samples examined, 11 contained Bursaphelenchus specimens. Morphological and molecular analyses were carried out to characterize the species detected. With respect to the possible presence of B. xylophilus, all samples were negative, confirming the absence of this quarantine pest in Romania. Nevertheless, five Bursaphelenchus species were found: B. hofmanni, B. poligraphi, B. vallesianus, B. willibaldi, and one putative new species belonging to the sexdentati group, classified here as Bursaphelenchus sp. NR512. These results constitute the first report of the genus Bursaphelenchus in Romania

Italian Ryegrass Establishment by Self-Seeding in Integrated Crop-Livestock Systems: Effects of Grazing Management

    Get PDF
Recent reports have indicated that integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLS) can enhance sustained crop and livestock production by efficiently using agricultural system resources (Liu et al. 2012). In the subtropical South American regions, soybean (Glycine max L. Merril) and maize (Zea Mays L.) crops are widely grown after Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam) pastures. In this system, the pasture may be established by self-seeding. Self-seedling reduces pasture production costs and extends the grazing period. The stoking method, and especially the grazing intensity, can greatly affect the quantity of seeds added to the soil by affecting the demography of the reproductive tillers. In subtropical areas where Italian ryegrass is used for winter pastures in ICLSs, the effects of crop rotation, stocking methods or grazing intensities on the subsequent ability of Italian ryegrass to self-seed are unknown. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the effects of management practices (crop rotation, stocking method and herbage allowance) on the establishment of Italian ryegrass pastures by self-seedling in an ICLS

Interferential electrical stimulation improves peripheral vasodilatation in healthy individuals

BACKGROUND:Interferential electrical stimulation (IES), which may be linked to greater penetration of deep tissue, may restore blood flow by sympathetic nervous modulation; however, studies have found no association between the frequency and duration of the application and blood flow. We hypothesized that 30 min of IES applied to the ganglion stellate region might improve blood flow redistribution.OBJECTIVES:The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of IES on metaboreflex activation in healthy individuals.METHOD:Interferential electrical stimulation or a placebo stimulus (same protocol without electrical output) was applied to the stellate ganglion region in eleven healthy subjects (age 25±1.3 years) prior to exercise. Mean blood pressure (MBP), heart rate (HR), calf blood flow (CBF) and calf vascular resistance (CVR) were measured throughout exercise protocols (submaximal static handgrip exercise) and with recovery periods with or without postexercise circulatory occlusion (PECO+ and PECO -, respectively). Muscle metaboreflex control of calf vascular resistance was estimated by subtracting the area under the curve when circulation was occluded from the area under the curve from the AUC without circulatory occlusion.RESULTS:At peak exercise, increases in mean blood pressure were attenuated by IES (p<0.05), and the effect persisted under both the PECO+ and PECO- treatments. IES promoted higher CBF and lower CVR during exercise and recovery. Likewise, IES induced a reduction in the estimated muscle metaboreflex control (placebo, 21±5 units vs. IES, 6±3, p<0.01).CONCLUSION:Acute application of IES prior to exercise attenuates the increase in blood pressure and vasoconstriction during exercise and metaboreflex activation in healthy subjects.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)FIPE-HCPA, Porto Alegre, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) Cardiovascular Surgery DepartmentHospital de Clinicas de Porto AlegreUniversidade de Brasilia Physical Therapy DepartmentUNIFESP, Cardiovascular Surgery DepartmentSciEL

Isobutyl acetate: electronic state spectroscopy by high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption, He(I) photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations

    Get PDF
The high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption spectrum of isobutyl acetate, C6H12O2, is presented here and was measured over the energy range 4.3–10.8 eV (290–115 nm). Valence and Rydberg transitions with their associated vibronic series have been observed in the photoabsorption spectrum and are assigned in accordance with new ab initio calculations of the vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths. The measured photoabsorption cross sections have been used to calculate the photolysis lifetime of this ester in the Earth’s upper atmosphere (20–50 km). Calculations have also been carried out to determine the ionization energies and fine structure of the lowest ionic state of isobutyl acetate and are compared with a photoelectron spectrum (from 9.5 to 16.7 eV), recorded for the first time. Vibrational structure is observed in the first photoelectron band of this molecule

Seedless Cu electroplating on Co-W thin films in low pH electrolyte: early stages of formation

    Get PDF
The use of Ta/TaN barrier bilayer systems in electronic applications has been ubiquitous over the last decade. Alternative materials such as Co-W or Ru-W alloys have gathered interest as possible replacements due to their conjugation of favourable electrical properties and barrier layer efficiency at reduced thicknesses while enabling seedless Cu electroplating. The microstructure, morphology, and electrical properties of Cu films directly electrodeposited onto Co-W or Ru-W are important to assess, concomitant with their ability to withstand the electroplating baths/conditions. This work investigates the effects of the current application method and pH value of the electroplating solution on the electrocrystallisation behaviour of Cu deposited onto a Co-W barrier layer. The film structure, morphology, and chemical composition were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, as well as photoelectron spectroscopy. The results show that the electrolyte solution at pH 1.8 is incapable of creating a compact Cu film over the Co-W layer in either pulsed or direct-current modes. At higher pH, a continuous film is formed. A mechanism is proposed for the nucleation and growth of Cu on Co-W, where a balance between Cu nucleation, growth, and preferential Co dissolution dictates the substrate area coverage and compactness of the electrodeposited films.Portugal 2020 through European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) in the frame of Operational Competitiveness and Internationalisation Programme (POCI) and in the scope of the project USECoIN with grant number PTDC/CTM-CTM/31953/2017. Get PDF

No. 2019-A0010806820 UIDB/00068/2020 PTDC/FIS-AQM/31281/2017Abstract: We present novel results of the analysis of the electronic structure of two aliphatic esters: methyl butyrate and methyl valerate. High-resolution photoabsorption spectra were collected and analyzed over the energy range 4.0–10.8 eV and showed for both the molecules not only a clear band of the HOMO to LUMO transition, but also vibronic structure associated with the first Rydberg-valence transition. Photoelectron spectra recorded from 9 to over 28 eV revealed many ionization states with the first adiabatic ionization energies found to be 9.977 eV and 9.959 eV for methyl butyrate and methyl valerate, respectively. Ab initio calculations have been performed in order to help assign the photoabsorption and photoelectron features. Photolysis life times in the atmosphere were calculated revealing that photolysis is not competitive over hydroxyl radical scavenging in the process of removal of these esters from the atmosphere.
