    SERCA is critical to control the Bowditch effect in the heart

    The Bowditch effect or staircase phenomenon is the increment or reduction of contractile force when heart rate increases, defined as either a positive or negative staircase. The healthy and failing human heart both show positive or negative staircase, respectively, but the causes of these distinct cardiac responses are unclear. Different experimental approaches indicate that while the level of Ca2+ in the sarcoplasmic reticulum is critical, the molecular mechanisms are unclear. Here, we demonstrate that Drosophila melanogaster shows a negative staircase which is associated to a slight but significant frequency-dependent acceleration of relaxation (FDAR) at the highest stimulation frequencies tested. We further showed that the type of staircase is oppositely modified by two distinct SERCA mutations. The dominant conditional mutation SERCAA617T induced positive staircase and arrhythmia, while SERCAE442K accentuated the negative staircase of wild type. At the stimulation frequencies tested, no significant FDAR could be appreciated in mutant flies. The present results provide evidence that two individual mutations directly modify the type of staircase occurring within the heart and suggest an important role of SERCA in regulating the Bowditch effect.Fil: Balcazar, Dario Emmanuel.     Prevalencia de Obesidad en Niños de Edad Escolar y su Asociación con la Escolaridad de su Cuidador

    Trabajo de Investigación para la LicenciaturaIntroducción: La Organización Mundial de la Salud, considera que la obesidad es una enfermedad crónica no transmisible que inicia a edades tempranas con un origen multicausal. Las investigaciones en salud pública actuales, se centran en establecer los determinantes sociales, económicos y ambientales de esta enfermedad. La educación es la variable predictiva más íntimamente relacionada con el estado de salud de una sociedad. Objetivo: Analizar la prevalencia de obesidad y su asociación con el nivel de escolaridad del cuidador del niño de edad escolar (de 1o a 6o) asistentes a la escuela “Marta Juana González” de Bo Villa El Libertador de la ciudad de Córdoba, durante el ciclo lectivo 2017. Metodología y población: Estudio descriptivo, transversal y observacional. Participaron 75 niños, seleccionados aleatoriamente por conglomerados.Se utilizó un cuestionario auto-administrado y se realizó antropometría. Se analizaron los datos mediante estadística descriptiva e inferencial. Resultados: El 30,67% de los niños presentaron obesidad. La prevalencia de la misma fue menor en los niños cuyos cuidadores tenían escolaridad media-alta 28,57%, en comparación con los que tenían escolaridad baja 30,43%, esta diferencia no fue estadísticamente significativa (p > 0,05). Conclusiones: Existe una alta prevalencia de obesidad y es mayor en el sexo masculino. Se observó menor prevalencia de obesidad en niveles de escolaridad medio- alto del cuidador, aunque no fue estadísticamente significativa. En su mayoría, el cuidador del niño resultó ser la madre. La frecuencia de obesidad fue mayor a la hallada en otros estudios locales y nacionales. Es importante abordar esta problemática desde un enfoque interdisciplinario planificando e implementando políticas públicas, enfatizando la promoción de la salud

    This study proposes a new research approach to examining the relationship between board diversity in terms of gender differences and corporate performance, measured by technical efficiency. Moreover, this paper also examines the moderating role that institutional factors exert on this relationship through the cultural dimensions of the country of origin. The research questions are examined using an international sample of 2185 listed firms from 2006 to 2015, applying several truncated regression models for panel data and employing data envelopment analysis to examine efficiency as a measure of performance. This paper provides support for the assertion that female directors decrease the firm's technical efficiency; however, in more economically orientated cultures, institutional context exerts a moderating effect on the latter. The female directors of companies located in countries with higher economically orientated values adopt male stereotypes and have a significant and positive interest in improving efficiency

    Smart management energy systems in industry 4.0

    In its origins, the term Industry 4.0 was associated with the computerization of manufacturing and with the diffusion of new network technologies in order to improve the communication paradigm. Today, the definition and implementation of Industry 4.0 include a number of trends, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), digital manufacturing and cyber-physical systems. Among these key elements, energy aware systems in factory automation are emerging as a challenging trend of Industry 4.0. Technological advancements in the ability to collect, transfer and analyze data by using smart energy aware systems are at the aim of this trend. Smart solutions in order to limit the power consumption of manufacturing line aim at developing and integrating new technologies and methods into smart factories in order to rapidly adapt and respond to changes in the markets’ demands for high-quality products. In fact, smart energy aware systems in factories lie at the core of both Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing. A variety of recent advanced technologies and approaches play important roles, by exploiting innovative technologies and solutions and/or optimization methods. They allow higher levels of adaptively and flexibility in energy aware systems

    Board Independence And Firm Performance: The Moderating Effect Of Institutional Context

    This study proposes a new research approach to examine the relationship between board independence and corporate performance, measured by technical efficiency. Moreover, this paper examines the moderating role that institutional factors exert on this relationship through the legal system—the content of law and its enforcement. The research questions are examined using an international sample of 2185 firms from 2006 to 2015, applying truncated regression models for panel data and employing data envelopment analysis to examine efficiency as a measure of performance. This paper supports that board independence increases the firm's technical efficiency. Even more, greater legal and judicial protection exerts a positive moderating effect on the previous relationship by protecting private benefits for insiders, among other aspects. Thus, the positive impact of independent directors on efficiency is greater when firms operate in countries with a greater extent of law and enforcement. Our findings include endogeneity checks using instrumental variables

    Class I TCP transcription factors activate the SAUR63 gene subfamily in gibberellin-dependent stamen filament elongation

    In autogamous plants like Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), stamen filament elongation must be finely regulated to ensure that anthers reach the pistil at the correct developmental stage. In this work, we studied the roles of Arabidopsis TEOSINTE BRANCHED1, CYCLOIDEA, PCF15 (TCP15), and related class-I TCP transcription factors in stamen filament elongation. Plants with decreased expression of class-I TCPs and plants that express a fusion of TCP15 to a repressor domain (pTCP15::TCP15-EAR) had shorter stamens, indicating that class-I TCPs stimulate filament growth. These plants also showed reduced expression of several SMALL AUXIN UP RNA (SAUR)63 subfamily genes, which contain TCP target motifs in their promoters. Mutational analysis indicated that the TCP target motif in the SAUR63 promoter is required for expression of SAUR63 in stamen filaments. Moreover, TCP15 directly binds to the SAUR63 promoter region that contains the TCP target motif in vivo, highlighting the role of the TCPs in this process. Class-I TCPs are also required for the induction of SAUR63 subfamily genes by gibberellins (GAs). In addition, overexpression of SAUR63 restores filament growth in pTCP15::TCP15-EAR plants, whereas overexpression of TCP15 rescues the short stamen phenotype of GA-deficient plants. The results indicate that TCP15 and related class-I TCPs modulate GA-dependent stamen filament elongation by direct activation of SAUR63 subfamily genes through conserved target sites in their promoters.     Invasion Fosters Change: Independent Evolutionary Shifts in Reproductive Traits after Oxalis pes-caprae L. Introduction

    Biological invasions offer optimal scenarios to study evolutionary changes under contemporary timescales. After long-distance dispersal, exotic species have to cope with strong mate limitation, and shifts toward uniparental reproduction have been hypothesized to be selectively advantageous. Oxalis pes-caprae is a clonal tristylous species native to South Africa, and invasive in Mediterranean regions worldwide. It reproduces sexually and asexually but the importance of each strategy differs between ranges. Native populations reproduce mostly sexually while in invasive ones asexual reproduction is the prevailing strategy due to the dominance of pentaploid monomorphic populations. Nevertheless, two contrasting scenarios have been observed after introduction: transition toward clonality, and re-acquisition of sexuality fueled by multiple introductions of compatible mates. Here, we aimed to assess evolutionary changes of reproductive traits in O. pes-caprae invasive populations and evaluate whether these traits could be related with invasion success and prevalence of certain forms in the western Mediterranean basin. Sexual and asexual reproduction traits were quantified under optimal conditions in a common garden experiment including native and invasive sexual, predominately asexual, and obligated asexual individuals. Different reproductive, ecological, and genetic constraints created by long-distance dispersal seem to have generated different selective pressures in sexual and asexual traits, with our results supporting evolutionary changes in invasive populations of O. pes-caprae. Native plants had higher sexual fitness, while a transition toward clonality was clear for invasive forms, supporting clonal reproduction as a major trait driving invasion. Differences were also observed among invasive plants, with sexual forms having increased dispersal potential; thus, they are expected to be in advantage in comparison with predominantly asexual and obligated asexual plants, and may become widespread in the future. Historical processes, like the initial introduction of predominantly asexual forms followed by sexual forms more recently, could be in the origin of current distribution patterns of O. pes-caprae in the western Mediterranean. This study shows that invasion processes are very dynamic and that ecological and genetic constraints determined by the invasion process may originate different reproductive strategies that are likely to determine invasion success
