The Complexity of Poverty. Dickens’s Response to the Poor Law from Oliver Twist to Bleak House

Pochi autori hanno saputo rappresentare la povert\ue0 con la compassione e la sensibilit\ue0 di Dickens, sorprende dunque che rari siano gli studi pubblicati sul rapporto tra Dickens e i poveri del suo tempo. Il presente articolo indaga l\u2019evoluzione del concetto di povert\ue0 nelle opere di Dickens dal giovanile Oliver Twist al pi\uf9 maturo Bleak House. In un momento in cui la riflessione sulla povert\ue0 era dominata dall\u2019agenda della Poor Law Commission, il pensiero che emerge dagli scritti dickensiani vede un\u2019evoluzione da una spontanea empatia di matrice religiosa a una visione pi\uf9 sofisticata della povert\ue0. La stessa poetica dei romanzi dickensiani consente col tempo di penetrare sempre pi\uf9 profondamente la complessit\ue0 della condizione del povero, in aperto contrasto con la semplicistica nozione vittoriana secondo cui i problemi che conducono all\u2019indigenza possono essere ricondotti a due o tre categorie e risolti di conseguenza.Few authors have been able to represent poverty with the intelligence and compassion shown by Dickens. And yet little scholarship has been devoted to the relationship between the Victorian novelist and the paupers of his times. This paper investigates the evolution of the idea of poverty in some of Dickens\u2019s work, from his early novel Oliver Twist to his more mature Bleak House. At a time when the understanding of poverty was dominated by the agenda of the Poor Law Commission, Dickens seems to move from a spontaneous and religious empathy with the poor, to a more sophisticated view of poverty, which he tackles in all its social and human complexity. Indeed Dickens\u2019s poetics allows him to offer a glimpse into the complexity of the poor\u2019s predicament, gainsaying the Victorian notion that indigent people could be sorted into two or three categories and managed accordingly

Quantum Criticality in a Bosonic Josephson Junction

In this paper we consider a bosonic Josephson junction described by a two-mode Bose-Hubbard model, and we thoroughly analyze a quantum phase transition occurring in the system in the limit of infinite bosonic population. We discuss the relation between this quantum phase transition and the dynamical bifurcation occurring in the spectrum of the Discrete Self Trapping equations describing the system at the semiclassical level. In particular, we identify five regimes depending on the strength of the effective interaction among bosons, and study the finite-size effects arising from the finiteness of the bosonic population. We devote a special attention to the critical regime which reduces to the dynamical bifurcation point in the thermodynamic limit of infinite bosonic population. Specifically, we highlight an anomalous scaling in the population imbalance between the two wells of the trapping potential, as well as in two quantities borrowed from Quantum Information Theory, i.e. the entropy of entanglement and the ground-state fidelity. Our analysis is not limited to the zero temperature case, but considers thermal effects as well.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure

IL saggio si propone di riflettere su un tentativo pi\uf9 unico che raro da parte degli inglesi di creare comunit\ue0 utopiche e villaggi modello in India. L\u2019esperimento sociale di Sir Daniel Hamilton ebbe luogo nei primissimi anni del XX secolo nell\u2019arcipelago dei Sundarbans in Bengala. Qui egli affitt\uf2 tre isole dal governo con lo scopo di stabilirci una comunit\ue0 che producesse prosperit\ue0 grazie a un innovativo sviluppo dell\u2019agricoltura e del credito. L\u2019idea di Hamilton si basava sul principio allora rivoluzionario che la ricchezza delle nazioni stesse nel capitale umano e non nelle riserve auree. Cos\uec Hamilton arriv\uf2 a fondare una banca cooperativa, a battere una moneta propria e a utilizzare il microcredito, come faranno molte ONG decenni dopo. What Dickens (and his readers) knew: an experiment in knowledge criticism

Dickens\u2019s awareness of the traps hidden on our apparently safe ways and railways was indeed spectacular: this knowledge, and the ways it is communicated to the reader, is addressed by this paper in an essay where eclectic criticism provides a way to decode Dickens\u2019s emotional and intellectual experiences as detailed in \u201cThe Signalman\u201d. The paper suggests that thorough investigation of the author\u2019s biography, culture, and anecdotal evidence may take advantage from deconstructionist methods as well as from other critical perspectives, including thing theory, ecocriticism, postcolonial or gender studies. We should consider knowledge criticism as a useful tool to decode Dickens\u2019s signs, insofar as the novel-ist rooted most of his work in actual experiences and tried to share most of his experiences with his readers, sharing with them, across narration, an epistemic horizon which yields its knowledge even today

"ATIVIDADE FÍSICA EM AMBIENTE ESCOLAR: CONSTRUÇÃO, DESENVOLVIMENTO E AVALIAÇÃO"

O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a efetividade de um programa de intervenção na prática da atividade física em escolares. Trata-se de um estudo de intervenção realizado em duas Escolas Municipais de Ensino Fundamental da Região Centro de Vitória ES. A amostra foi composta por 178 escolares, de ambos os sexos, com idade entre sete e 12 anos, do 3º ao 5º anos dos turnos matutino e vespertino. Após sorteio das escolas para composição do Grupo Controle (GC) e Grupo Intervenção (GI), o GI foi submetido a um programa de intervenção por meio de oficinas de educação em saúde com foco em alimentação saudável e atividade física. Em todas as oficinas foram realizadas ações de incentivo ao aumento da atividade física. O GC foi exposto a duas palestras sobre os mesmos assuntos. Foram realizados testes dentro de cada grupo e entre os grupos para avaliar se estes eram comparáveis, sendo utilizados os testes t de Student e Levene, além dos testes de qui-quadrado e exato de Fisher. O teste de qui-quadrado foi utilizado para avaliar a diferença entre os fatores relacionados às barreiras percebidas à atividade física. ANOVA a duas vias foi utilizada para avaliar o efeito da intervenção. A amostra foi constituída por 113 escolares (63,5%) do GI e 65 (36,5%) do GC. Cerca de 53% (n=94) dos escolares eram do sexo feminino, 32,5% (n=58) tinham 10 anos e a idade média de 9,2±1 ano. Foi observado elevado tempo de tela entre os escolares estudados (310±177 minutos), com média superior para os garotos (p<0,05) e, houve redução no tempo de tela de ambos os grupos após programa de intervenção. O deslocamento ativo era utilizado pela maior parte da amostra (76%, n=135). A atividade física realizada fora da escola e a maior frequência dessa prática estiveram associados à percepção de um menor número de barreiras à prática de atividade física (p<0,05). Foi observado aumento do escore de AF apenas no grupo IG após exposição às oficinas de educação em saúde, mesmo após ajuste por classe socioeconômica e sexo (p<0,05). Os resultados encontrados neste estudo demonstraram que a metodologia de oficinas em grupo foi efetivo no aumento da prática de atividade física de alunos do 3º ao 5º anos do ensino fundamental de escolas públicas Vitória/ES

Beyond East and West. The meaning and significance of Kim’s Great Game

The essay investigates Rudyard Kipling's novel Kim (1901) with particular attention to the historical background of the so-called Great Game, the cold war between Russians and English. This perspective challenges current readings of the novel, according to which Kim relinquishes his Indian identity in order to become a sahib. Kim undergoes a parallel education in Western practice and Eastern values, which allows him to become a far completer man than any of the characters deployed by the novel. Buddhism plays a key role, as it represents the metaphor of collective and private spirituality rather than a cultural stereotype, thus resembling the intelligence activity, which, in this case, is considered as a tool to access an alternative and hidden truth
