Flexible Hybrid Circuit Fully Inkjet-Printed: Surface Mount Devices Assembled by Silver Nanoparticles-Based Inkjet Ink
Nowadays, inkjet-printed devices such as transistors are still unstable in air and have poor performances. Moreover, the present electronics applications require a high degree of reliability and quality of their properties. In order to accomplish these application requirements, hybrid electronics is fulfilled by combining the advantages of the printing technologies with the surface-mount technology. In this work, silver nanoparticle-based inkjet ink (AgNP ink) is used as a novel approach to connect surface-mount devices (SMDs) onto inkjet-printed pads, conducted by inkjet printing technology. Excellent quality AgNP ink-junctions are ensured with high resolution picoliter drop jetting at low temperature (∼150 °C). Electrical, mechanical, and morphological characterizations are carried out to assess the performance of the AgNP ink junction. Moreover, AgNP ink is compared with common benchmark materials (i.e., silver epoxy and solder). Electrical contact resistance characterization shows a similar performance between the AgNP ink and the usual ones. Mechanical characterization shows comparable shear strength for AgNP ink and silver epoxy, and both present higher adhesion than solder. Morphological inspections by field-emission scanning electron microscopy confirm a high quality interface of the silver nanoparticle interconnection. Finally, a flexible hybrid circuit on paper controlled by an Arduino board is manufactured, demonstrating the viability and scalability of the AgNP ink assembling technique
Frequent demonstration of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) in bone marrow biopsy samples from Turkish patients with multiple myeloma (MM)
In order to investigate the frequency of HHV-8 in MM patients from another geographic location, we obtained fresh bone marrow (BM) biopsies from Turkish patients with MM (n = 21), monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) (n = 2), plasmacytoma (n = 1) with BM plasma cell infiltration, various hematological disorders (n = 6), and five healthy Turkish controls. The frequency of HHV-8 was analyzed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in two independent laboratories in the USA and in Turkey. Using fresh BM biopsies, 17/21 MM patients were positive for HHV-8 whereas all five healthy controls, and six patients with other hematological disorders were negative. Two patients with MGUS, and one patient with a solitary plasmacytoma were also negative. The data from the two laboratories were completely concordant. Also using primer pairs for v IRF and v IL-8R confirmed the results observed with the KS330233 primers. Furthermore, sequence analysis demonstrated a C3 strain pattern in the ORF26 region which was also found in MM patients from the US. Thus, HHV-8 is present in the majority of Turkish MM patients, and the absence of the virus in healthy controls further supports its role in the pathogenesis of MM
Synthesis of Trifluoromethyl Ketones by (Diethylamino) Sulfur Trifluoride (DAST)-Mediated Nucleophilic Trifluoromethylation of Benzoic Acids
Within the past few decades, the presence of fluorine containing
organic molecules has increased significantly. Many of the
current industrial production methods are not cost-effective,
practical, or inherently safe. This work describes a new methodology
for the synthesis of trifluoromethyl ketones. Our new method involves
the use of benzoic acid and trifluoromethyl trimethylsilane (TMSCF3) as starting
materials along with diethylamino sulfur trifluoride (DAST) as a reagent
to obtain moderate to good yields of expected products in a short
reaction times
Speaking and Rhetoric in the Community: The Implications of Aristotle\u27s Understanding of Being
This thesis analyzes Martin Heidegger\u27s early interpretation of Aristotelian concepts. The goal is to acquire an increased understanding of the ideas underlying Aristotle\u27s political philosophy, as well as those underlying Heidegger\u27s own later philosophy. The investigation begins with a critique of Kantian logic and the assumptions which underlie it, which are ultimately traced back to Aristotle. The passages that pertain to Kant\u27s interpretation are assessed by Heidegger, who concludes that it is speaking, not explicit definition, that grounds possibility for life in a human sense. To demonstrate Heidegger\u27s argument, the thesis transitions into an assessment of the Greek view of life and the way it influences Aristotle\u27s investigation of the human being. The goal of the first three chapters is ultimately to demonstrate the manner in which speaking allows for a unique way of being in the world for the human being, a way of being that makes ethical disposition and thus moral excellence possible. Beginning in Chapter 4, the thesis discusses the Aristotelian concept of ends and endhood, ultimately outlining the manner in which Aristotle goes about his investigation in the Nicomachean Ethics which serves to re-emphasize the interpretation set forth in the first half of the thesis. After giving an account of eudaimonia, the thesis discusses rhetoric and politics in chapter five, since it is demonstrated that an ethical disposition cannot be acquired without both being and conversing with other people in a community. A brief account of Aristotle\u27s conclusions in the Politics and Rhetoric follows, and the thesis concludes with an outline of the web of ideas that Heidegger has set forth in his interpretation. The thesis also provides an in-depth interpretation of key passages from the Metaphysics, Politics, Rhetoric, De Anima and Nicomachean Ethics which ultimately serve as examples of Heidegger\u27s unique manner of interpretation to the reader

Characterizing the Interaction Between Non-Pathogenic Fusarium Oxysporum and Arabidopsis Thaliana to Determine Beneficial Effects Conferred to the Model Plant Host
Fusarium oxysporum (Fo) is a soil-borne fungal pathogen that causes vascular wilt disease on a broad range of plants, including agricultural crops and the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. There are non-pathogenic members of the Fo species complex that confer defense benefits against other pathogens to the host plant, however alteration to the host’s physiology through interaction with one of these strains, Fo47, have not been described. In this study, we aimed to establish the Fo47-A. thaliana interaction and determine if Fo47 reduces disease severity of a pathogenic Fo isolate, Fo5176. Additionally, we sought to use bioinformatics to mine transcriptomic data of the infection between Fo47 and A. thaliana for putative effectors from the non-pathogenic isolate using a pipeline that is validated by identifying known effectors in the interaction between Fo5176 and A. thaliana. Phenotypic characterization of A. thaliana plants inoculated with Fo47 or Fo5176 has revealed a significant increase in rosette biomass of Fo47 inoculated plants when compared to mock (sterile water) inoculated plants. As is observed in other systems, treatment of plants with Fo47 prior to challenging with pathogenic Fo significantly reduces the disease severity over time. The results of this study suggest that Fo47 is a possible biocontrol agent against Fo5176, and that inoculation with non-pathogenic Fo alters the physiology of A. thaliana such that it has a higher rosette biomass without alterations to the water status of the plant. Our pipeline for extracting putative effectors using transcriptomic data as a critical filter generated 13 candidate genes for further experimentation to determine their role in the Fo47-A. thaliana interaction. This research reports the first known observation that Fo47 increases the shoot biomass of the host plant it is interacting with, and that the model plant A. thaliana can be used as a host to examine the spectrum of interactions capable within the Fusarium oxysporum species complex
Wind's response to transient mesoscale pressure fields associated with squall lines, The
May 1990.Includes bibliographical references.A simple one-dimensional slab model has been developed to examine the wind's response to transient mesoscale pressure fields that frequently accompany mature midlatitude squall lines. The model numerically solves a form of the momentum equation that includes the pressure gradient force, advection, and the frictional force. The Coriolis force is neglected since attention is focused on time periods of 1-2 hrs. The pressure field is specified by a sine wave with a constant phase speed. The amplitude of this wave is initially zero, but then increases linearly with every timestep until t = 2 hrs. At this time, the wave reaches its predetermined maximum amplitude. This pressure wave represents a mesohigh and wake low that have the same amplitude and phase speed. Since these features are transient, the air lacks sufficient time to achieve a balanced state. Therefore, winds are directed forward through the mesohigh, and rearward through the wake low, at right angles to the isobars. This airflow pattern produces an axis of divergence to the rear of the mesohigh, with convergence occurring near the back edge of the wake low. The model is able to accurately simulate the airflow near these pressure features. Pressure waves with various maximum amplitudes and phase speeds are used in the model for the purpose of comparison. Model results vary slightly as the phase speed and maximum amplitude of the pressure wave is changed. Air parcel trajectories are used to help explain these variations. Model results are compared to the observed airflow near the mesohigh and wake low associated with an intense squall line that moved through Oklahoma and Kansas on 10-11 June 1985. The time period of interest is 0100–0400 UTC on the 11th of June, during which the squall line, as well as the mesoscale pressure fields, reached their maximum intensity. Cross sections through the center of the mesohigh and wake low indicate that the pressure field were roughly sinusoidal with an amplitude of approximately 2.5 mb. Therefore, model results obtained using a 2.5 mb maximum amplitude pressure wave are used for the comparison. The model derived wind field is similar to the observed wind field in many respects. Differences can be attributed to several factors, one of which is the fact that the pressure field, specified in the model, is only an approximation to the observed pressure field. Finally, a discussion of the frictional force is presented. To assess the relative importance of the surface friction term, a scale analysis of the momentum equation is performed. This analysis shows that this term is only one order of magnitude smaller than the next smallest term in the momentum equation. Therefore, surface friction cannot be neglected. Slight variations in model results occur as the magnitude of the term varies. The effects of momentum transport from above on the surface wind field are also discussed. It appears that such transport is only important near the leading convective line where convective scale updrafts and downdrafts are occurring. Behind the convective line, the rain cooled air is much too stable, and the convective scale motion is too weak, for significant momentum transport into the boundary layer.Research supported by NOAA under grant no.NA 85 RAH 05045
The Relationship Between Parental Rearing, Self-Efficacy and Resilience in the Development of a Coping Style
The current study investigated the relationship between self-efficacy, resilience, perceived parental rearing and the use of adaptive or maladaptive coping strategies. The Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Inventory (Brief COPE; Carver, 1997) was used to assess participant\u27s coping styles. The General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES; Schwarzer & Jerusalem, 1995) was utilized to assess a participant’s self-efficacy. The Brief Resilience Scale (BRS, Smith et al., 2008) was used to measure resilience, and the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ; Buri (1991) was used to assess perceived parental rearing. A between-subjects design with two multiple regressions was used to evaluate the relationship between these factors. One hundred and twenty nine participants participated in the study. Results of the study found that participants who reported low self-efficacy, low self-esteem and low resilience utilized maladaptive coping strategies. Results, however, did not support the idea that perceived authoritarian or permissive parental rearing influenced maladaptive coping. Additionally, results did not support the hypothesis that high self-efficacy, high self-esteem, high resilience or perceived authoritative parental rearing resulted in adaptive coping. Findings from this study highlight the need for interventions aimed at increasing individuals’ self-efficacy, self-esteem and resilience in order to aid individuals in using more adaptive coping strategies. Findings from this study also highlight the difficulties that arise when attempting to dichotomize coping; they also highlight the need for future research to examine specific stressors and look qualitatively at how individuals deal with those specific stressors
