    Becoming Intimate With Developmental Knowledge: Pedagogical Explorations with Collective Biography

    In this article, we draw on postfoundational frameworks to make visible the subjectification processes by which practitioners simultaneously master and become mastered by developmental theories. We emphasize the implication of the entire minded-body in the processes of the developmental worker formation. We show these processes through empirical investigation with data gathered through collective biography in a child development graduate course in a child and youth care program. Often developmental psychology masks itself as “just natural” knowledge that informs our practice. However, the article shows that our relationship with developmental psychology is much more intricate and intimate than we might believe. This intimate relationship can provide new possibilities for resisting developmental knowledge in practice and training

    Globalizing Hayden White

    This conversation originated in a plenary session organized by Ewa DomaƄska and MarĂ­a InĂ©s La Greca under the same title of ‘Globalizing Hayden White’ at the III International Network for Theory of History Conference ‘Place and Displacement: The Spacing of History’ held at Södertörn University, Stockholm, in August 2018. In order to pay homage to Hayden White’s life work 5 months after his passing we knew that what was needed–and what he himself would have wanted–was a vibrant intellectual exchange. Our ‘celebration by discussion’ contains elaborated and revised versions of the presentations by scholars from China (Xin Chen), Latin America (MarĂ­a InĂ©s La Greca, Veronica Tozzi Thompson), United States (Paul Roth), Western (Kalle Pihlainen) and East-Central Europe (Ewa DomaƄska). We took this opportunity of gathering scholars who represent different parts of the world, different cultures and approaches to reflect on White’s ideas in a global context. Our interest was in discussing how his work has been read and used (or even misread and misused) and how it has influenced theoretical discussions in different parts of the globe. Rather than just offering an account as experts, we mainly wanted to reflect on the current state of our field and the ways that White’s inheritance might and should be carried forward in the future.Fil: Domanska, Ewa.     A nine-year longitudinal case study of a 27-year-old male with neurocysticercosis presenting with new onset seizures

    Background: Taenia solium is a cestode endemic to regions of Latin America, Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and Oceania, and serves as the most common cause of acquired epilepsy in the world. T. solium eggs are transmitted fecal-orally when a human or pig host ingests contaminated food or water. Larvae hatch from the intestines and invade into muscle, tissue, or organs, forming cysts called cysticerci. Cysticerci involving the central nervous system is termed neurocysticercosis (NCC). Patients with NCC typically remain asymptomatic for 3-5 years in the viable stage until the host’s immune response is activated in the degenerating stage. Immune-mediated degradation of cysticerci and subsequent inflammation and edema in the nonviable stage may manifest as new onset seizures, headache, and other neurological deficits caused by increasing intracranial pressure. The diagnosis of NCC in non-endemic areas is based on clinical symptoms, history of travel to an endemic region, and presence of classic ring-enhancing lesions on neuroimaging. Case Description: A healthy 27-year-old male presents with new onset seizures. The first episode was witnessed by his wife who stated he was washing dishes before he fell to the ground convulsing. The seizure spontaneously resolved upon arrival of the ambulance. The patient denies symptoms of fever, fatigue, unexplained weight change, headaches, focal neurologic deficit, visual changes, cough, rash, recent illness, or head trauma. Further history is noncontributory except for note of travel to China four years ago to visit his in-laws. Vital signs are within normal range. In the Emergency Department, he suffers another witnessed seizure and is treated with lorazepam. He is disoriented and combative in his postictal state necessitating sedation with intubation. A CBC, CMP, troponin, HIV, toxicology, and tuberculosis screen are largely normal. Lumbar puncture reveals elevated leukocytes with normal glucose and protein levels. Parasitology report and blood cultures remain negative throughout the visit. Computerized tomography (CT) scan and contrasted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain show a 3-4 millimeter calcified, ring-enhancing lesion in the right frontal lobe with surrounding edema. He is diagnosed with NCC based on symptoms, travel history, and neuroimaging findings. Conclusion/Discussion: This is an uncomplicated nine-year longitudinal case study of a patient with NCC presenting with new onset seizures four years after traveling to China. Symptomatic management at the time of diagnosis included dexamethasone for brain edema and levetiracetam for prevention of further seizures. Antiparasitics, which can be used in viable or degenerating stages, were not utilized in our patient due to the evidence of a nonviable calcified cysticercus on imaging. The patient ultimately opted for surgical removal of the lesion to definitively treat his seizures. A six-month postoperative MRI confirmed resolution of abnormal findings, at which point the patient was weaned off levetiracetam. Nine years later, the patient remains seizure-free and without complications

    A kin-selection model of fairness in heterogeneous populations

    Humans and other primates exhibit pro-social preferences for fairness. These preferences are thought to be reinforced by strong reciprocity, a policy that rewards fair actors and punishes unfair ones. Theories of fairness based on strong reciprocity have been criticized for overlooking the importance of individual differences in socially heterogeneous populations. Here, we explore the evolution of fairness in a heterogeneous population. We analyse the Ultimatum Game in cases where players’ roles in the game are determined by their status. Importantly, our model allows for non-random pairing of players, and so we also explore the role played by kin selection in shaping fairness. Our kin-selection model shows that, when individuals condition their behaviour on their role in the game, fairness can be understood as either altruistic or spiteful. Altruistic fairness directs resources from less valuable members of a genetic lineage to more valuable members of the same lineage, whereas spiteful fairness keeps resources away from the competitors of the actor’s high-value relatives. When individuals express fairness unconditionally it can be understood as altruistic or selfish. When it is altruistic, unconditional fairness again serves to direct resources to high-value members of genetic lineages. When it is selfish, unconditional fairness simply improves an individual’s own standing. Overall, we expand kin-selection based explanations for fairness to include motivations other than spite. We show, therefore, that one need not invoke strong reciprocity to explain the advantage of fairness in heterogeneous populations

    Simulation of the AGILE gamma-ray imaging detector performance: Part II

    In this paper (Paper II) we complete our discussion on the results of a comprehensive GEANT simulation of the scientific performance of the AGILE Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID), operating in the 30 MeV - 50 GeV energy range in an equatorial orbit of height near 550 km. Here we focus on the on-board Level-2 data processing and discuss possible alternative strategies for event selection and their optimization. We find that the dominant particle background components after our Level-2 processing are electrons and positrons of kinetic energies between 10 and 100 MeV penetrating the GRID instrument from directions almost parallel to the Tracker planes (incidence angles > 90 degrees) or from below. The analog (charge) information available on-board in the GRID Tracker is crucial for a reduction by almost three orders of magnitude of protons (and heavier ions) with kinetic energies near 100 MeV. We also present in this paper the telemetry structure of the GRID photon and particle events, and obtain the on-board effective area for photon detection in the energy range ~30 MeV - 50 GeV.Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A.     Elaboration of bilateral symmetry across Knautia macedonica capitula related to changes in ventral petal expression of CYCLOIDEA-like genes

    Abstract Background Shifts in floral form across angiosperms, particularly from radially symmetrical to bilaterally symmetrical flowers, are often associated with shifts in speciation rates and changes in pollination syndrome. Growing evidence across both rosids and asterids indicates that CYCLOIDEA (CYC)-like transcription factors from the TCP gene family play a role in establishing the dorsoventral pattern of flower symmetry, which affects the development of both the corolla and androecium. Previous studies of CYC-like genes, especially of the CYC2 clade, indicate that these genes are dorsally restricted in bilaterally symmetrical flowers. Also, gene duplication of CYC-like genes often correlates with shifts in floral form in both individual flowers and head-like inflorescences (capitula). Results Here, we compared the expression patterns of six CYC-like genes from dorsal, lateral, and ventral petals of internal and external florets across capitula of Knautia macedonica (Dipsacaceae). We demonstrate that multiple copies of CYC-like genes are differentially expressed among petal types and between internal and external florets. Across paralogs, there was a general trend toward a reduction in dorsal expression and an increase in ventral expression in internal florets compared to external florets. However, it was in the ventral petals where a statistically significant increase in expression correlates with a less zygomorphic flower. We also show for the first time lateral-specific expression of a CYC-like gene. Additionally, dorsoventral asymmetric expression of a CYC3 paralog indicates that this understudied gene clade is likely also involved in floral symmetry. Conclusions These data indicate that the elaboration of bilateral symmetry may be regulated by the dorsoventral gradient of expression, with statistically significant changes in ventral expression correlating with changes in dorsoventral morphological specialization

    Exploring systems that support good clinical care in Indigenous primary health-care services: a retrospective analysis of longitudinal systems assessment tool data from high-improving services

    Background: Continuous quality improvement is a process for raising the quality of primary health care across Indigenous PHC services. In addition to clinical auditing using plan, do, study, act cycles, engaging staff in a process of reflecting on systems to support quality care is vital. The One21seventy Systems Assessment Tool (SAT) supports staff to assess systems performance in terms of five key components. This study examines quantitative and qualitative SAT data from five high-improving Indigenous primary health care services in northern Australia to understand the systems used to support quality care. Methods: High improving services selected for the study were determined by calculating quality of care indices for Indigenous health services participating in the ABCD National Research Partnership. Services that reported continuing high improvement in quality of care delivered across two or more audit tools in three or more audits were selected for the study. Pre-collected SAT data (from annual team SAT meetings) is presented longitudinally using radar plots for quantitative scores for each component and content analysis is used to describe strengths and weaknesses of performance in each systems component. Results: High improving services were able to demonstrate strong processes for assessing system performance and consistent improvement in systems to support quality care across components. Key strengths in the quality support systems included adequate and orientated workforce, appropriate health system supports and engagement with other organisations and community while the weaknesses included lack of service infrastructure, recruitment, retention and support for staff and additional costs. Qualitative data revealed clear voices from health service staff expressing concerns with performance and subsequent SAT data provided evidence of changes made to address concerns. Conclusion: Learning from the processes and strengths of high-improving services may be useful as we work with services striving to improve the quality of care provided in other areas

    Semi-quantitative mass spectrometry in AML cells identifies new non-genomic targets of the EZH2 methyltransferase

    Alterations to the gene encoding the EZH2 (KMT6A) methyltransferase, including both gain-of-function and loss-of-function, have been linked to a variety of haematological malignancies and solid tumours, suggesting a complex, context-dependent role of this methyltransferase. The successful implementation of molecularly targeted therapies against EZH2 requires a greater understanding of the potential mechanisms by which EZH2 contributes to cancer. One aspect of this effort is the mapping of EZH2 partner proteins and cellular targets. To this end we performed affinity-purification mass spectrometry in the FAB-M2 HL-60 acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) cell line before and after all-transretinoic acid-induced differentiation. These studies identified new EZH2 interaction partners and potential non-histone substrates for EZH2-mediated methylation. Our results suggest that EZH2 is involved in the regulation of translation through interactions with a number of RNA binding proteins and by methylating key components of protein synthesis such as eEF1A1. Given that deregulated mRNA translation is a frequent feature of cancer and that eEF1A1 is highly expressed in many human tumours, these findings present new possibilities for the therapeutic targeting of EZH2 in AML
