    Farmers, food and climate change: ensuring community-based adaptation is mainstreamed into agricultural programmes

    Climate change creates widespread risks for food production. As climate impacts are often locally specific, it is imperative that large-scale initiatives to support smallholder farmers consider local priorities and integrate lessons from successful autonomous adaptation efforts. This article explores how large-scale programmes for smallholder adaptation to climate change might link effectively with community-led adaptation initiatives. Drawing on experiences in Bangladesh, Mozambique, Uganda and India, this article identifies key success factors and barriers for considering local priorities, capacities and lessons in large-scale adaptation programmes. It highlights the key roles of extension services and farmers' organizations as mechanisms for linking between national-level and community-level adaptation, and a range of other success factors which include participative and locally driven vulnerability assessments, tailoring of adaptation technologies to local contexts, mapping local institutions and working in partnership across institutions. Barriers include weak governance, gaps in the regulatory and policy environment, high opportunity costs, low literacy and underdeveloped markets. The article concludes that mainstreaming climate adaptation into large-scale agricultural initiatives requires not only integration of lessons from community-based adaptation, but also the building of inclusive governance to ensure smallholders can engage with those policies and processes affecting their vulnerability

    Observations of HI Absorbing Gas in Compact Radio Sources at Cosmological Redshifts

    We present an overview of the occurrence and properties of atomic gas associated with compact radio sources at redshifts up to z=0.85. Searches for HI 21cm absorption were made with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope at UHF-high frequencies (725-1200 MHz). Detections were obtained for 19 of the 57 sources with usable spectra (33%). We have found a large range in line depths, from tau=0.16 to tau<=0.001. There is a substantial variety of line profiles, including Gaussians of less than 10km/s, to more typically 150km/s, as well as irregular and multi-peaked absorption profiles, sometimes spanning several hundred km/s. Assuming uniform coverage of the entire radio source, we obtain column depths of atomic gas between 1e19 and 3.3e21(Tsp/100K)(1/f)cm^(-2). There is evidence for significant gas motions, but in contrast to earlier results at low redshift, there are many sources in which the HI velocity is substantially negative (up to v=-1420km/s) with respect to the optical redshift, suggesting that in these sources the atomic gas, rather than falling into the centre, may be be flowing out, interacting with the jets, or rotating around the nucleus.Comment: 10 pages, accepted for publication in A&

    Robustness of intra urban land-use regression models for ultrafine particles and black carbon based on mobile monitoring.

    Land-use regression (LUR) models for ultrafine particles (UFP) and Black Carbon (BC) in urban areas have been developed using short-term stationary monitoring or mobile platforms in order to capture the high variability of these pollutants. However, little is known about the comparability of predictions of mobile and short-term stationary models and especially the validity of these models for assessing residential exposures and the robustness of model predictions developed in different campaigns. We used an electric car to collect mobile measurements (n = 5236 unique road segments) and short-term stationary measurements (3 × 30min, n = 240) of UFP and BC in three Dutch cities (Amsterdam, Utrecht, Maastricht) in 2014-2015. Predictions of LUR models based on mobile measurements were compared to (i) measured concentrations at the short-term stationary sites, (ii) LUR model predictions based on short-term stationary measurements at 1500 random addresses in the three cities, (iii) externally obtained home outdoor measurements (3 × 24h samples; n = 42) and (iv) predictions of a LUR model developed based upon a 2013 mobile campaign in two cities (Amsterdam, Rotterdam). Despite the poor model R(2) of 15%, the ability of mobile UFP models to predict measurements with longer averaging time increased substantially from 36% for short-term stationary measurements to 57% for home outdoor measurements. In contrast, the mobile BC model only predicted 14% of the variation in the short-term stationary sites and also 14% of the home outdoor sites. Models based upon mobile and short-term stationary monitoring provided fairly high correlated predictions of UFP concentrations at 1500 randomly selected addresses in the three Dutch cities (R(2) = 0.64). We found higher UFP predictions (of about 30%) based on mobile models opposed to short-term model predictions and home outdoor measurements with no clear geospatial patterns. The mobile model for UFP was stable over different settings as the model predicted concentration levels highly correlated to predictions made by a previously developed LUR model with another spatial extent and in a different year at the 1500 random addresses (R(2) = 0.80). In conclusion, mobile monitoring provided robust LUR models for UFP, valid to use in epidemiological studies

    Microvessel quantification in primary colorectal carcinoma: an immunohistochemical study.

    The vascularisation of human primary colorectal carcinomas was studied immunohistochemically using the endothelial cell markers CD31 and factor VIII-related antigen. Tumour sections were systematically scanned at a magnification of x 100 to find areas of intense neovascularisation. Microvessel counts within these vascular 'hotspots' were performed at magnification x 250. Regions in which tumour cords were surrounded by a collagen IV-positive basement membrane were compared with those in which this was absent and with normal mucosa. CD31 appeared to be a more sensitive marker for endothelial cells than factor VIII-related antigen (mean 185 +/- 59 and 120 +/- 38 microvessels mm-2). Within individual tumour sections microvessel counts in vascular hotspots with highest vessel density correlated significantly with microvessel counts in vascular hotspots with second highest vessel density (P < 0.01). Microvessel counts in tumour areas where collagen IV-positive basement membrane were absent exceeded those in areas where it was present (factor of 1.7) and those in normal mucosa (factor of 1.6). The differences in vessel density between individual tumours and the low variability in vessel density within individual tumours using this quantification technique allow us to investigate the prognostic value of vessel density in areas of intense neovascularisation in human primary colorectal carcinomas

    Extending the use of the Endoscopic Endonasal Sinus and Skull Base Surgery Questionnaire in a cross-sectional study:Patients with chronic rhinosinusitis versus healthy controls

    Objectives There are several instruments to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Unfortunately, none of them evaluates all three health domains (physical, social and psychological) important to assess the overall well-being of the patient. The Endoscopic Endonasal Sinus and Skull Base Surgery Questionnaire (EES-Q) does assess all these elements. Initially, the EES-Q is validated to evaluate the impact of endoscopic endonasal surgery (EES) on HRQoL. The aim of this study is to assess whether EES-Q outcomes differ in patients with CRS compared with healthy individuals. Therefore, extending the use of the EES-Q for all CRS patients. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Tertiary referral hospital. Participants One hundred patients with uncontrolled CRS (50% with nasal polyps) scheduled to receive EES. The questionnaire was completed preoperatively. Healthy control subjects (n = 100) without any history of sinusitis or a known current medical treatment at a hospital were included. Main outcome measures Mann-Whitney U test was performed to identify differences in EES-Q scores (domain scores and EES-Q score). Results The median EES-Q score in CRS patients (33.8) was significantly higher (p < 0.001) than in the control group (10.4). As well as the physical (52.5 vs. 16.4, p < 0.001), psychological (13.8 vs. 5.0, p < 0.001) and social (37.5 vs. 2.5, p < 0.001) domain scores. Conclusions With this study, we are extending the use of the EES-Q. It indicates that the EES-Q can be a valuable clinical tool to assess multidimensional HRQoL in all patients with CRS

    Why are Prices Sticky? Evidence from Business Survey Data

    This paper offers new insights on the price setting behaviour of German retail firms using a novel dataset that consists of a large panel of monthly business surveys from 1991-2006. The firm-level data allows matching changes in firms' prices to several other firm-characteristics. Moreover, information on price expectations allow analyzing the determinants of price updating. Using univariate and bivariate ordered probit specifications, empirical menu cost models are estimated relating the probability of price adjustment and price updating, respectively, to both time- and state- dependent variables. First, results suggest an important role for state-dependence; changes in the macroeconomic and institutional environment as well as firm-specific factors are significantly related to the timing of price adjustment. These findings imply that price setting models should endogenize the timing of price adjustment in order to generate realistic predictions concerning the transmission of monetary policy. Second, an analysis of price expectations yields similar results providing evidence in favour of state-dependent sticky plan models. Third, intermediate input cost changes are among the most important determinants of price adjustment suggesting that pricing models should explicitly incorporate price setting at different production stages. However, the results show that adjustment to input cost changes takes time indicating "additional stickiness" at the last stage of processing

This leads to humans becoming highly dependent on digital devices, including upon digital: assistance, intelligence, and decisions. A major concern of this digital dependence is the lack of human oversight or intervention in many of the ways humans use this technology. This dependence and reliance on digital technology raises concerns in how humans trust such systems, and how to ensure digital technology behaves appropriately. This works considers recent developments and projects that combine digital technology and artificial intelligence with human society. The focus is on critical scenarios where failure of digital technology can lead to significant harm or even death. We explore how to build trust for users of digital technology in such scenarios and considering many different challenges for digital technology. The approaches applied and proposed here address user trust along many dimensions and aim to build collaborative and empowering use of digital technologies in critical aspects of human society

    Social media use and impact during the holiday travel planning process

    Through an empirical study among holiday travellers, residing in the Former Soviet Union Republics, this paper presents a comprehensive view of role and impact of social media on the whole holiday travel planning process: Before, during and after the trip, providing insights on usage levels, scope of use, level of influence and trust. Findings suggest that social media are predominantly used after holidays for experience sharing. It is also shown that there is a strong correlation between perceived level of influence from social media and changes made in holiday plans prior to final decisions. Moreover, it is revealed that user-generated content is perceived as more trustworthy when compared to official tourism websites, travel agents and mass media advertising
