Heterogeneous Computing on Mixed Unstructured Grids with PyFR
PyFR is an open-source high-order accurate computational fluid dynamics
solver for mixed unstructured grids that can target a range of hardware
platforms from a single codebase. In this paper we demonstrate the ability of
PyFR to perform high-order accurate unsteady simulations of flow on mixed
unstructured grids using heterogeneous multi-node hardware. Specifically, after
benchmarking single-node performance for various platforms, PyFR v0.2.2 is used
to undertake simulations of unsteady flow over a circular cylinder at Reynolds
number 3 900 using a mixed unstructured grid of prismatic and tetrahedral
elements on a desktop workstation containing an Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2 CPU, an
NVIDIA Tesla K40c GPU, and an AMD FirePro W9100 GPU. Both the performance and
accuracy of PyFR are assessed. PyFR v0.2.2 is freely available under a 3-Clause

Cochlear implantation in elderly: indication and results
The aim of the study was to investigate the outcome of CI among elderly cochlear implant recipients. Results from our study have shown that elder patient implanted above 75 yrs can obtain significant hearing benefit from cochlear implantation. Similarly to the results reported by Vermeer1, in our study subjects implanted at elder age show lower scores compared to younger adult implantees
Temporal Stabilisation of Flux Reconstruction on Linear Problems
Filtering is often used in Large Eddy Simulation with a global filter width,
instead here a filter width in the reference domain of high order Flux
Reconstruction is considered. It is shown via Von Neumann analysis how
filtering effects the dispersion and dissipation of the scheme when spatially
and temporally discretised. With it being shown that filtering stabilises the
scheme temporally by upto for forth order FR. The impact of filtering on
error production is calculated, highlighting the reduction in convective
velocity caused and showing numerically the impact on order of accuracy.
Finally, the turbulent Taylor-Green case is used to understand the effect of
reference domain filtering on the transition to turbulence, and a filter
Reynolds number is defined that is shown to be useful in understanding the

Twin-screw granulation – a systematic analysis of process parameters
Twin-screw granulation has a significant advantage over traditional granulation methods leading to the possibility of continuous manufacturing. Although this technology has drawn attention in recent years, the general understanding of the process is limited. This study gives a brief overview of the most important process parameters and their influence on product quality. Experimental results from a benchtop granulator and an in-line particle size measurement have been analysed. From this basic study conclusions can be drawn how to tailor the particle size distribution in twin-screw granulation. The most crucial parameters are the liquid-to-solid ratio and the filling level of the screws

Serological markers for prediction of response to anti-tumor necrosis factor treatment in Crohn's disease
peer reviewedOBJECTIVES: The use of monoclonal anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) antibodies (infliximab, Remicade) is a new therapeutic approach for severe refractory luminal or fistulizing, Crohn's disease (CD). However, up to 30% of patients do not respond to this treatment. So far, no parameters predictive of response to anti-TNT have been identified. Our aim was to determine whether serological markers ASCA (anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies) or pANCA (perinuclear antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies) could identify Crohn's patients likely to benefit from anti-TNF therapy. METHODS: Serum samples of 279 CID patients were analyzed for ASCA and pANCA before anti-TNF therapy. A blinded physician determined clinical response at week 4 (refractory luminal CD) or week 10 (fistulizing CD) after the first infusion of infliximab (5 mg/kg). RESULTS: Overall, there was no relationship between ASCA or pANCA and response to therapy. However, lower response rates were observed for patients with refractory intestinal disease carrying the pANCA+/ASCA- combination, although this lacked significance (p = 0.067). CONCLUSIONS: In this cohort of infliximab-treated patients, neither ASCA nor pANCA could predict response to treatment. However, the combination pANCA+/ASCA- might warrant further investigation for its value in predicting nonresponse in patients with refractory luminal disease
