    En esta investigación se analiza la implantación de la docencia semipresencial en el grado universitario de la Universidad de Barcelona. En el estudio se han identificado aquellos grados universitarios en los que la docencia semipresencial tiene, a nivel institucional, un peso específico importante. En ellos se analizan los motivos que han determinado la aplicación de dicha modalidad docente, así como la problemática derivada tanto de su implantación estructural como la referida a su impartición. La metodología utilizada se ha basado en entrevistas y cuestionarios semiestructurados específicos para responsables académicos y profesorado implicado. Se aportan, a modo de valoraciones finales, un conjunto de reflexiones que pueden ser de utilidad en posteriores experiencias, y se enmarcan en las tendencias europeas de futuro en la docencia semipresencial

    Zinc oxide as an ozone sensor

    Journal of Applied Physics, Vol. 96, nÂş3This work presents a study of intrinsic zinc oxide thin film as ozone sensor based on the ultraviolet sUVd photoreduction and subsequent ozone re oxidation of zinc oxide as a fully reversible process performed at room temperature. The films analyzed were produced by spray pyrolysis, dc and rf magnetron sputtering. The dc resistivity of the films produced by rf magnetron sputtering and constituted by nanocrystallites changes more than eight orders of magnitude when exposed to an UV dose of 4 mW/cm2. On the other hand, porous and textured zinc oxide films produced by spray pyrolysis at low substrate temperature exhibit an excellent ac impedance response where the reactance changes by more than seven orders of magnitude when exposed to the same UV dose, with a response frequency above 15 kHz, thus showing improved ozone ac sensing discrimination

    Interrelationships Between the Kinetics of VLDL Subspecies and HDL Catabolism in Abdominal Obesity: A Multicenter Tracer Kinetic Study

    Context: Low plasma high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is a major abnormality in abdominal obesity. This relates due to accelerated HDL catabolism, but the underlying mechanism requires further elucidation. The relationships between HDL catabolism and other variables that may be modified in abdominal obesity, such as very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) subspecies (VLDL1, VLDL2) kinetics, liver fat, or visceral adiposity, remain to be investigated. Objectives: Our aim was to study the associations between HDL apolipoprotein (apo)-A-I fractional catabolic rate (FCR) and the kinetics of VLDL subspecies and estimates of liver and visceral and sc fat. Design: We carried out a multicenter in vivo kinetic study using stable isotopes (deuterated leucine and glycerol) in 62 individuals with abdominal obesity. Results: In a multivariate analysis, among the morphological and biological parameters that may predict apoA-I FCR, liver fat (beta = .400, P = .003), and VLDL1-apoB (beta = .307, P = .020) were independently associated with apoA-I FCR. In a multivariate analysis, among the kinetic parameters, VLDL1-triglycerides (TGs) indirect FCR (beta = .357, P = .001), VLDL1-TG production rate (beta = 0.213, P = .048), and apoA-II FCR (beta = .667, P < .0001) were independently associated with apoA-I FCR. After adjustment for VLDL1-TG production rate, liver fat was no more correlated with apoA-I FCR. No association between apoA-I FCR and visceral fat was observed. Conclusions: We show that VLDL1 is an important independent determinant of apoA-I FCR and more precisely that apoA-I FCR is independently associated with both catabolism and the production of VLDL1-TG. In addition, we show an association between liver fat and apoA-I FCR that is mostly mediated by VLDL1-TG production. These data indicate that, in abdominal obesity, dysfunctional VLDL1 metabolism is an important modulator of HDL apoA-I catabolism

    The consequences of disordered charge stripes and antiphase spin domains for the properties of the high-temperature superconductors are studied. We focus on angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and optical conductivity, and show that the many unusual features of the experimentally observed spectra can be understood naturally in this way. This interpretation of the data, when combined with evidence from neutron scattering and NMR, suggests that disordered and fluctuating stripe phases are a common feature of high-temperature superconductors.Comment: 4 pages, figures by fax or mai

    Preloaded time trial to assess load carriage performance.

    The relevance and importance of load carriage in recreational and occupational tasks has stimulated a large body of research. Exercise protocols have been criticized for a lack of relevance to occupational activities; accordingly, the aim of this study was to assess the reliability of a preloaded time-trial protocol for load carriage assessment. After full familiarization, 8 healthy males performed 2 trials separated by 1 week. Each trial comprised 60-minute walking at 6.5 km·h and 0% gradient (LC), 15 minutes seated recovery followed by a 2.4-km time-trial (LCTT). All trials were performed wearing a 25-kg backpack. Performance time was 16.71 ± 1.82 minutes and 16.37 ± 1.78 minutes for LCTT 1 and 2, respectively with a mean difference of -0.34 ± 0.89 minutes. Using log ratio limits of agreement, the mean bias was 1.02 and random error component of the agreement ratio was 1.11. The intraclass correlation was 0.85, coefficient of variation was 10.5%, and Cohen's d was 0.35. The protocol demonstrated a very good level of reliability. We present a novel and reliable preloaded time-trial protocol that more closely reflects operational activities and can be used to quantify load carriage performance. This protocol provides greater ecologically validity regarding physical demands of load carriage activities than those adopted previously and provides an excellent tool for the strength and conditioning practitioner to assess individual load carriage performance.N/

    Single-Band Model for Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors: Dynamical and Transport Properties and Relevance of Clustered States

    Dynamical and transport properties of a simple single-band spin-fermion lattice model for (III,Mn)V diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) is here discussed using Monte Carlo simulations. This effort is a continuation of previous work (G. Alvarez, Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 277202 (2002)) where the static properties of the model were studied. The present results support the view that the relevant regime of J/t (standard notation) is that of intermediate coupling, where carriers are only partially trapped near Mn spins, and locally ordered regions (clusters) are present above the Curie temperature T_C. This conclusion is based on the calculation of the resistivity vs. temperature, that shows a soft metal to insulator transition near T_C, as well on the analysis of the density-of-states and optical conductivity. In addition, in the clustered regime a large magnetoresistance is observed in simulations. Formal analogies between DMS and manganites are also discussed.Comment: Revtex4, 20 figures.     Geochronological and geochemical data from fracture-filling calcites from the Lower Pedraforca thrust sheet (SE Pyrenees)

    U-Pb dating using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), δ13C, δ18O, clumped isotopes and 87Sr/86Sr analysis, and electron microprobe have been applied to fracture-filling calcites and host carbonates from the Lower Pedraforca thrust sheet, in the SE Pyrenees. These data are used to determine the type and origin of migrating fluids, the evolution of the palaeohydrological system and timing of fracturing during the emplacement of this thrust sheet, as described in the article “From hydroplastic to brittle deformation: controls on fluid flow in fold and thrust belts. Insights from the Lower Pedraforca thrust sheet (SE Pyrenees)” – Marine and Petroleum Geology (2020). The integration of these data is also used to compare the fluid flow evolution of the Southern Pyrenees with that of other orogens worldwide and to generate a fluid flow model in fold and thrust belts. At a more local scale, the U-Pb dataset provides new absolute ages recording the deformation in the Lower Pedraforca thrust sheet, which was previously dated by means of indirect methods such as biostratigraphy of marine sediments and magnetostratigraphy of continental deposits

    Effect of acute hypoxia on respiratory muscle fatigue in healthy humans

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Greater diaphragm fatigue has been reported after hypoxic versus normoxic exercise, but whether this is due to increased ventilation and therefore work of breathing or reduced blood oxygenation per se remains unclear. Hence, we assessed the effect of different blood oxygenation level on isolated hyperpnoea-induced inspiratory and expiratory muscle fatigue.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Twelve healthy males performed three 15-min isocapnic hyperpnoea tests (85% of maximum voluntary ventilation with controlled breathing pattern) in normoxic, hypoxic (SpO<sub>2 </sub>= 80%) and hyperoxic (FiO<sub>2 </sub>= 0.60) conditions, in a random order. Before, immediately after and 30 min after hyperpnoea, transdiaphragmatic pressure (P<sub>di,tw </sub>) was measured during cervical magnetic stimulation to assess diaphragm contractility, and gastric pressure (P<sub>ga,tw </sub>) was measured during thoracic magnetic stimulation to assess abdominal muscle contractility. Two-way analysis of variance (time x condition) was used to compare hyperpnoea-induced respiratory muscle fatigue between conditions.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Hypoxia enhanced hyperpnoea-induced P<sub>di,tw </sub>and P<sub>ga,tw </sub>reductions both immediately after hyperpnoea (P<sub>di,tw </sub>: normoxia -22 ± 7% vs hypoxia -34 ± 8% vs hyperoxia -21 ± 8%; P<sub>ga,tw </sub>: normoxia -17 ± 7% vs hypoxia -26 ± 10% vs hyperoxia -16 ± 11%; all <it>P </it>< 0.05) and after 30 min of recovery (P<sub>di,tw </sub>: normoxia -10 ± 7% vs hypoxia -16 ± 8% vs hyperoxia -8 ± 7%; P<sub>ga,tw </sub>: normoxia -13 ± 6% vs hypoxia -21 ± 9% vs hyperoxia -12 ± 12%; all <it>P </it>< 0.05). No significant difference in P<sub>di,tw </sub>or P<sub>ga,tw </sub>reductions was observed between normoxic and hyperoxic conditions. Also, heart rate and blood lactate concentration during hyperpnoea were higher in hypoxia compared to normoxia and hyperoxia.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results demonstrate that hypoxia exacerbates both diaphragm and abdominal muscle fatigability. These results emphasize the potential role of respiratory muscle fatigue in exercise performance limitation under conditions coupling increased work of breathing and reduced O<sub>2 </sub>transport as during exercise in altitude or in hypoxemic patients.</p
