A Verification Framework for Fictitious Play Based Learning Algorithms
Distributed optimisation techniques have gained increasing attention due to fast development of autonomous robots. Many algorithms have been proposed to make optimisation more efficient. In this paper we propose a framework, which is based on probabilistic verification techniques, in order to compare the performance of various game-theoretic algorithms, in particular, fictitious play and its variants, after a finite number of iterations. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the framework, we apply the framework to a game which is inspired by wireless communication network problems, on five variations of fictitious play algorithms
GBM Observations of V404 Cyg During its 2015 Outburst
V404 Cygni was discovered in 1989 by the X-ray satellite during its
only previously observed X-ray outburst and soon after confirmed as a black
hole binary. On June 15, 2015, the Gamma Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) triggered on a
new outburst of V404 Cygni. We present 13 days of GBM observations of this
outburst including Earth occultation flux measurements, spectral and temporal
analysis. The Earth occultation fluxes reached 30 Crab with detected emission
to 100 keV and determined, via hardness ratios, that the source was in a hard
state. At high luminosity, spectral analysis between 8 and 300 keV showed that
the electron temperature decreased with increasing luminosity. This is expected
if the protons and electrons are in thermal equilibrium during an outburst with
the electrons cooled by the Compton scattering of softer seed photons from the
disk. However, the implied seed photon temperatures are unusually high,
suggesting a contribution from another source, such as the jet. No evidence of
state transitions is seen during this time period. The temporal analysis
reveals power spectra that can be modeled with two or three strong, broad
Lorentzians, similar to the power spectra of black hole binaries in their hard
state

Searching for galactic sources in the Swift GRB catalog
Since the early 1990s Gamma Ray Bursts have been accepted to be of
extra-galactic origin due to the isotropic distribution observed by BATSE and
the redshifts observed via absorption line spectroscopy. Nevertheless, upon
further examination at least one case turned out to be of galactic origin. This
particular event presented a Fast Rise, Exponential Decay (FRED) structure
which leads us to believe that other FRED sources might also be Galactic. This
study was set out to estimate the most probable degree of contamination by
galactic sources that certain samples of FREDs have. In order to quantify the
degree of anisotropy the average dipolar and quadripolar moments of each sample
of GRBs with respect to the galactic plane were calculated. This was then
compared to the probability distribution of simulated samples comprised of a
combination of isotropically generated sources and galactic sources. We observe
that the dipolar and quadripolar moments of the selected subsamples of FREDs
are found more than two standard deviations outside those of random
isotropically generated samples. The most probable degree of contamination by
galactic sources for the FRED GRBs of the Swift catalog detected until February
2011 that do not have a known redshift is about 21 out of 77 sources which is
roughly equal to 27%. Furthermore we observe, that by removing from this sample
those bursts that may have any type of indirect redshift indicator and multiple
peaks gives the most probable contamination increases up to 34% (17 out of 49
sources). It is probable that a high degree of contamination by galactic
sources occurs among the single peak FREDs observed by Swift.Comment: Published to A&A, 4 pages, 5 figures, this arXiv version includes

Radiation distributions in TCV
Total radiative powers measured by foil bolometer and AXUV camera systems are compared to SOLPS5 simulations in low and high density deuterium and helium diverted discharges on the TCV tokamak. For low density the match between simulation and measurements is satisfactory, but at high density strongly radiating regions outside the SOLPS5 simulation grid are seen in measurements and this may indicate the presence of enhanced convective particle transport in the low field side midplane region. The chord coverage of the foil bolometer system does not, however, allow detailed resolution in this region. The comparison of foil and AXUV data also demonstrates that ageing of the AXUV diodes under plasma irradiation combined with the unevenness of the diode spectral response, strongly limits their application for total radiative power measurements. The aim of this study was the establishment of precision-cut lung slices (PCLS) as a suitable ex vivo alternative approach to animal experiments for investigation of immunomodulatory effects. For this purpose we characterized the changes of cytokine production and the expression of cell surface markers after incubation of PCLS with immunoactive substances lipopolysaccharide (LPS), macrophage-activating lipopeptide-2 (MALP-2), interferon ? (IFN?), and dexamethasone. Viability of PCLS from wild-type and CD11c-enhanced yellow fluorescent protein (CD11-EYFP)-transgenic mice was controlled by measurement of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) enzyme activity and live/dead fluorescence staining using confocal microscopy. Cytokines and chemokines were detected with Luminex technology and ELISA. Antigen presenting cell (APC) markers were investigated in living mouse PCLS in situ using confocal microscopy. LPS triggered profound pro-inflammatory effects in PCLS. Dexamethasone prevented LPS-induced production of cytokines/chemokines such as interleukin (IL)-5, IL-1greek small letter alpha, TNFgreek small letter alpha, IL-12(p40), and RANTES in PCLS. Surface expression of MHC class II, CD40, and CD11c, but not CD86 was present in APCs of naive PCLS. Incubation with LPS enhanced specifically the expression of MHC class II on diverse cells. MALP-2 only failed to alter cytokine or chemokine levels, but was highly effective in combination with IFN? resulting in increased levels of TNFgreek small letter alpha, IL-12(p40), RANTES, and IL-1greek small letter alpha. PCLS showed characteristic responses to typical pro-inflammatory stimuli and may thus provide a suitable ex vivo technique to predict the immunomodulatory potency of inhaled substances
Gamma Ray Bursts: recent results and connections to very high energy Cosmic Rays and Neutrinos
Gamma-ray bursts are the most concentrated explosions in the Universe. They
have been detected electromagnetically at energies up to tens of GeV, and it is
suspected that they could be active at least up to TeV energies. It is also
speculated that they could emit cosmic rays and neutrinos at energies reaching
up to the eV range. Here we review the recent developments in
the photon phenomenology in the light of \swift and \fermi satellite
observations, as well as recent IceCube upper limits on their neutrino
luminosity. We discuss some of the theoretical models developed to explain
these observations and their possible contribution to a very high energy cosmic
ray and neutrino background.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. Text of a plenary lecture at the PASCOS 12
