An unreliable narrator (prisoner of madness, full of lies...) is one of the most powerful weapons an author can use. As we shall see, the effects multiply when that writer is Edgar Allan Poe. On the other hand, or in addition, if there is something that can delight more than reading Poe, that is teaching Poe. His narrators, those that appear in stories like "The Tell-Tale Heart" or "The Black Cat" offer a magnificent example for our project. Mentally unstable, despite their (intended?) intentions of reliability, these narrators often move away subjectively from the facts. That is why these stories will be part of the corpus of narratives that we present here.2019-2

We all have heard about vampires. Many cultures have developed myths and legends about vampires with different features. These tales have several common elements, as the dualism between life and death. Vampirism is one of the most enduring, universal, popular myths of all times, being one of the most archaic images that society has feared. Popular tales, folk legends and mythological stories about beings that prey upon others to drink their blood have been told for centuries across myriad peoples all over the world. Over the past few centuries, modern vampire myths emerging out of Europe have outlined the bloodsucking monsters as those who have risen from the dead to feed on human blood by night, sleeping in coffins by day to avoid the effects of the sun. Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula provided us with the now iconic archetype. Vampires are deeply associated to blood, the vital fluid whose consumption has been a curse both for such a being and for the peoples. According to social, anthropological conceptions, these symbols do not come from nothing, but follow a process of transformation, emerging from real experience, intertwined with the cultural tradition. We intend to show and analyze the reason for such a linking.2019-2
«The Flowering of the Strange Orchid» : From Plant Science to Victorian Horror From a Multidisciplinary Approach
Plants are organisms whose great biological distance from humans has aroused cultural interest as powerful and/or dangerously unfamiliar creatures, especially during the Victorian period. «The Flowering of the Strange Orchid» (1894), by Herbert George Wells, tells how an orchid collector is attacked to near death by his latest acquisition. The plant attacks the human with its «tentacle-like aerial rootlets», like a vampire feeding on his blood. However, Winter-Wedderburn is saved by his housekeeper, and the plant dies instantly. The story is written at a historical moment of great fascination with orchids and carnivorous plants. Literarily, the story has numerous comparisons to great characters, such as Medusa and her tentacles, Dracula, Carmilla, and even IT. At the same time, it is a story with a strong plant science content, dealing with aspects such as the mechanisms used by orchids to obtain nutrients, their flowering, the importance of «hunting» for the survival of carnivorous plants or the biology of parasitic plants. In conclusion, Wells' story makes an important critique of the way man relates to nature using literary fiction and the cutting-edge plant science knowledge of his time.
Echoes of Fairy Tales: Fantasy and Everyday Horrors in Guillermo del Toro’s Filmography
Guillermo del Toro’s filmography uses recurrently old formulas such as archetypal folk
and fairy- tale motifs and characters, adapting them to contemporary culture and society.
The fantastic acts as a parallel universe to our logical world. His films describe
a supernatural reality that intertwines with the ordinary world, using the archetypes
of these narrations in the real world. Del Toro claims the figure of the monster as one
of his outstanding characters, showing that the classical monsters are usually represented
as vulnerable creatures subjected to the brutality of the human being. His films
have a utopian spirit, mixed with fairy tales exclusively for adults, morality, goodness
or the capacity of sacrifice of his protagonists, the overcoming of obstacles and the
deepening of a state of knowledge and virtue. Fantasy serves the director as a vehicle
to introduce political and social issues through a series of metaphors, which are appreciable
in films such as Pan’s Labyrinth, Crimson Peak or The Shape of Water.2019-2
Two Hundred Faces of a Vampire: Lord Ruthven’s Influence on Vampire Culture
Being born in the same monstruous night that witnessed the rise of Frankenstein monster, the vampire Lord Ruthven celebrates in 2019 two hundred years influencing vampire culture. As it happens in literature, John William Polidori’s creature spread his curse through the centuries creating attractive, aristocrat, sexually ambiguous and immoral male and female vampires. From Victorian penny dreadfuls, novellas and novels such as Varney, the Vampire, Carmilla and Dracula, to present novel as Interview with the Vampire, the short story “The Vampyre” established the character who walk among human beings as a predator who chooses his prey. Ruthven was directly shaped on Lord Byron personality and, similar to the famous English poet, was an elegant figure of high culture and refined manners who hid a wild, libertine, profoundly narcissist nature and irascible behaviour, traits that paradoxically became Byron and his literary counterpart, delightfully fascinating beings. Reflecting the Romantic esthetic of its time, Polidori’s short story instituted the vampire as a rebel beyond bourgeois social norms. Lord Ruthven was an undead and, threfore, was not bound to the concepts that rule the living ones. In this way, the vampire appeal to humanity hidden desires related to the anguish of death, to the perspective of the transcendence and to the fear of the consequences of this act abandoning human nature. These elements help understanding the cultural impact John William Polidori’s creation keep on exercising two hundred years after 1819 through “The Vampyre”.2019-2
