    Resonant optical control of the structural distortions that drive ultrafast demagnetization in Cr2_2O3_3

    We study how the color and polarization of ultrashort pulses of visible light can be used to control the demagnetization processes of the antiferromagnetic insulator Cr2_2O3_3. We utilize time-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) to probe how changes in the magnetic and structural state evolve in time. We show that, varying the pump photon-energy to excite either localized transitions within the Cr or charge transfer states, leads to markedly different dynamics. Through a full polarization analysis of the SHG signal, symmetry considerations and density functional theory calculations, we show that, in the non-equilibrium state, SHG is sensitive to {\em both} lattice displacements and changes to the magnetic order, which allows us to conclude that different excited states couple to phonon modes of different symmetries. Furthermore, the spin-scattering rate depends on the induced distortion, enabling us to control the timescale for the demagnetization process. Our results suggest that selective photoexcitation of antiferromagnetic insulators allows fast and efficient manipulation of their magnetic state.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

    Metabolomics and psychological features in fibromyalgia and electromagnetic sensitivity

    Fibromyalgia (FM) as Fibromyalgia and Electromagnetic Sensitivity (IEI-EMF) are a chronic and systemic syndrome. The main symptom is represented by strong and widespread pain in the musculoskeletal system. The exact causes that lead to the development of FM and IEI-EMF are still unknown. Interestingly, the proximity to electrical and electromagnetic devices seems to trigger and/or amplify the symptoms. We investigated the blood plasma metabolome in IEI-EMF and healthy subjects using 1H NMR spectroscopy coupled with multivariate statistical analysis. All the individuals were subjected to tests for the evaluation of psychological and physical features. No significant differences between IEI-EMF and controls relative to personality aspects, Locus of Control, and anxiety were found. Multivariate statistical analysis on the metabolites identified by NMR analysis allowed the identification of a distinct metabolic profile between IEI-EMF and healthy subjects. IEI-EMF were characterized by higher levels of glycine and pyroglutamate, and lower levels of 2-hydroxyisocaproate, choline, glutamine, and isoleucine compared to healthy subjects. These metabolites are involved in several metabolic pathways mainly related to oxidative stress defense, pain mechanisms, and muscle metabolism. The results here obtained highlight possible physiopathological mechanisms in IEI-EMF patients to be better defined

    Predicción de la motivación autodeterminada según las estrategias para mantener la disciplina y la orientación motivacional en estudiantes adolescentes de educación física

    El objetivo del trabajo fue comprobar el poder de predicción de las estrategias utilizadas por el profesorado para mantener la disciplina y la orientación de meta disposicional sobre la motivación autodeterminada en estudiantes adolescentes de educación física, y la relación entre las mismas. Para ello, se empleó una muestra de 736 estudiantes correspondiente a los niveles educativos de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria y Bachillerato a los que se les pasaron las escalas de Estrategias para Mantener la Disciplina en Clase de educación física (SSDS), la Escala de Orientación Motivacional (POSQ) y la Escala de Motivación Deportiva (SMS). Los resultados mostraron la importancia de dirigir al alumnado a través de estrategias de disciplina de preocupación y responsabilidad para conseguir una orientación a la tarea y como consecuencia una motivación autodeterminada. Además, las estrategias de preocupación/responsabilidad del profesorado y la orientación al ego aparecieron como factores clave en el desarrollo de la motivación autodeterminada.The objective of this paper was to checking the relations between the motivation self-determination, the goal dispositional orientation and the strategies used by the teacher to maintain discipline in the adolescent physical education students. A sample of 736 students Compulsory Secondary Education or Secondary School Certificate courses, was used for that purpose. They were given the POSQ (Roberts and Balaguer, 1991; Roberts, Treasure and Balaguer, 1998), SMS (Pelletier et al., 1995) and SSDS scales (Papioannou, 1998). The results showed the importance to direct the pupils towards the task for developing the most self-determinated motivation and discipline way. Also, the strategies used by the teacher to maintain discipline in the classroom (concern/responsibility) and ego dispositional orientation showed like key factors in the self-determination motivation preview

    Emphysematous Cystitis (EC) is a rare form of complicated urinary tract infection, characterized by the presence of gas in the bladder and in its wall. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is the major risk factor. Clinical manifestations in EC can range from asymptomatic form to severe sepsis and fatal events. Abdominal imaging is requested to diagnose EC and evaluate its severity. Early diagnosis and appropriate management improve the outcome. We report a case of incidental EC diagnosis in an 82-yearold diabetic male who was investigated for severe anemia

    Aerosol number fluxes and concentrations over a southern European urban area

    Although cities are an important source of aerosol particles, aerosol number flux measurements over urban areas are scarce. These measurements are however important as they can allow us to identify the different sources/sinks of aerosol particles and quantify their emission contributions. Therefore, they can help us to understand the aerosol impacts on human health and climate, and to design effective mitigation strategies through the reduction of urban aerosol emissions. In this work we analyze the aerosol number concentrations and fluxes for particles with diameters larger than 2.5 nm measured by eddy covariance technique at an urban area (Granada city, Spain) from November 2016 to April 2018. This is the first study of particle number flux in an urban area in the Iberian Peninsula and is one of the few current studies that report long-term aerosol number flux measurements. The results suggest that, on average, Granada urban area acted as a net source for atmospheric aerosol particles with median particle number flux of 150 x 10(6) m(-2) s(-1). Downward negative fluxes were observed in only 12% of the analyzed data, and most of them were observed during high aerosol load conditions. Both aerosol number fluxes and concentrations were maximum in winter and 50% larger than those measured in summer due to the increased emissions from domestic heating, burning of residual agricultural waste in the agricultural area surrounding the site, as well as to the lower aerosol dilution effects during winter. The analysis of the seasonal diurnal variability of the aerosol number concentration revealed the significant impact of traffic emissions on aerosol population over Granada urban area in all seasons. It also shows the impact of domestic heating and agricultural waste burning emissions in winter as well as the influence of new particle formation processes in summer and spring seasons. Closer analysis by wind sector demonstrated that both aerosol concentrations and fluxes from urban sector (where high density of anthropogenic sources is located) were lower than those from rural sector (which includes agricultural area but also the main highway of the city). This evidences the strong impact of aerosol emissions from traffic circulating on the highway on aerosol population over our measurement site.Peer reviewe

    Gut bacterial diversity and physiological traits of Anastrepha fraterculus Brazilian-1 morphotype males are affected by antibiotic treatment.

    Background: The interaction between gut bacterial symbionts and Tephritidae became the focus of several studies that showed that bacteria contributed to the nutritional status and the reproductive potential of its fruit fly hosts. Anastrepha fraterculus is an economically important fruit pest in South America. This pest is currently controlled by insecticides, which prompt the development of environmentally friendly methods such as the sterile insect technique (SIT). For SIT to be effective, a deep understanding of the biology and sexual behavior of the target species is needed. Although many studies have contributed in this direction, little is known about the composition and role of A. fraterculus symbiotic bacteria. In this study we tested the hypothesis that gut bacteria contribute to nutritional status and reproductive success of A. fraterculus males.Methods: Wild and laboratory-reared males were treated with antibiotics (AB) and provided sugar (S) or sugar plus protein (S+P) as food sources. The effect of AB on the gut bacteria diversity was assessed through DGGE and sequencing of the V6-V9 variable region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene.Results: AB affected the bacterial community of the digestive tract of A. fraterculus, in particular59 bacteria belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family, which was the dominant bacterial group in the control flies (i.e., non-treated with AB). AB negatively affected parameters directly related to the mating success of laboratory males and their nutritional status. AB also affected males?survival under starvation conditions. The effect of AB on the behaviour and nutritional status of the males depended on two additional factors: the origin of the males and the presence of a proteinaceous source in the diet.Conclusions: our results suggest that A. fraterculus 65 males gut contain symbiotic organisms that are able to exert a positive contribution on A. fraterculus males? fitness, although the physiological mechanisms still need further studies.Fil: Juárez, María Laura.     Comparison of different prognostic scores for patients with cirrhosis hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2 infection

    Introduction and Objectives: Viral infections have been described to increase the risk of decompensation in patients with cirrhosis. We aimed to determine the effect of SARS-CoV-2 infection on outcome of hospitalized patients with cirrhosis and to compare the performance of different prognostic models for predicting mortality. Patients: We performed a prospective cohort study including 2211 hospitalized patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection from April 15, 2020 through October 1, 2020 in 38 Hospitals from 11 Latin American countries. We registered clinical and laboratory parameters of patients with and without cirrhosis. All patients were followed until discharge or death. We evaluated the prognostic performance of different scoring systems to predict mortality in patients with cirrhosis using ROC curves. Results: Overall, 4.6% (CI 3.7–5.6) subjects had cirrhosis (n = 96). Baseline Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) class was assessed: CTP-A (23%), CTP-B (45%) and CTP-C (32%); median MELD-Na score was 19 (IQR 14−25). Mortality was 47% in patients with cirrhosis and 16% in patients without cirrhosis (P 30. The areas under the ROC curves for performance evaluation in predicting 28-days mortality for Chronic Liver Failure Consortium (CLIF-C), North American Consortium for the Study of End-Stage Liver Disease (NACSELD), CTP score and MELD-Na were 0.85, 0.75, 0.69, 0.67; respectively (P < .0001). Conclusions: SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with elevated mortality in patients with cirrhosis.     Pre-dilation and Post-dilation in Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: Indications, Benefits and Risks

    Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is an established treatment for patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis. In recent years, an emphasis has been placed on simplification of the procedure. Balloon predilation was initially considered a mandatory step to cross and prepare the stenotic aortic valve, but several studies demonstrated the feasibility of performing TAVR without balloon valvuloplasty. Balloon postdilation of the implanted valve is sometimes required to optimise results, although many patients do not require this step. Contemporary consensus advocates an individualised approach to TAVR procedures and so balloon pre- and post-dilation are performed selectively. This review aims to outline the advantages and disadvantages of balloon pre- and post-dilation and to identify the scenarios in which they are required during TAVR procedures

    Clinical Features, Cardiovascular Risk Profile, and Therapeutic Trajectories of Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Candidate for Oral Semaglutide Therapy in the Italian Specialist Care

    Introduction: This study aimed to address therapeutic inertia in the management of type 2 diabetes (T2D) by investigating the potential of early treatment with oral semaglutide. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between October 2021 and April 2022 among specialists treating individuals with T2D. A scientific committee designed a data collection form covering demographics, cardiovascular risk, glucose control metrics, ongoing therapies, and physician judgments on treatment appropriateness. Participants completed anonymous patient questionnaires reflecting routine clinical encounters. The preferred therapeutic regimen for each patient was also identified. Results: The analysis was conducted on 4449 patients initiating oral semaglutide. The population had a relatively short disease duration (42%  60% of patients, and more often than sitagliptin or empagliflozin. Conclusion: The study supports the potential of early implementation of oral semaglutide as a strategy to overcome therapeutic inertia and enhance T2D management
