The open constructed public sphere: Aeschylus’ The Suppliant Women in a version by David Greig

This article looks at the ‘public’ ‘place’ of drama in Britain at present by offering an analysis of a contemporary version of an ancient Greek play by Aeschylus, entitled The Suppliant Women, written by David Greig, directed by Ramin Gray, and first performed at the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh in 2016. Following an agonistic (Chantal Mouffe), rather than a consensual (Jürgen Habermas) model of the public sphere, it argues that under globalisation, three cumulative and interwoven senses of the public sphere, the discursive, the spatial, and the individual and his/her/their relation to a larger form of organisation, despite persisting hegemonic structures that perpetuate their containment, have become undone. This is the kind of unbounded model of public sphere Greig’s version of Aeschylus’ The Suppliant Women seems to suggest by precisely offering undoings of discourses, spaces, and individualisations. In order to frame the first kind of undoing, that is, the unmarking of theatre as contained, the article uses Christopher Balme’s notion of ‘open theatrical public sphere’, and in order to frame the second, that is, the undoing of elements ‘in’ Greig’s version, the article utilises Greig’s concept of ‘constructed space’. The article arrives then at the notion of the open constructed public sphere in relation to The Suppliant Women. By engaging with this porous model of the public sphere, The Suppliant Women enacts a protest against exclusionary, reductive models of exchange and organisation, political engagement, and belonging under globalisation

Adoption Technology Targets and Knowledge Dynamics: Consequences for Long-Run Prospects

    Get PDF
When targeting frontier technologies, less developed economies usually face obstacles to achieve high growth in the long run, because of their low level of knowledge relative to the adoption technology target. If the intensity in which the adoption activity uses knowledge is high, then the less developed economy may end up trapped in a low growth equilibrium. We show that in this case it is beneficial to target less advanced technologies, which helps to compensate the scarcity of knowledge during the transition. Nevertheless, polarization is possible. If knowledge intensity in the adoption activity is low, then possessing a low stock of knowledge allows targeting the technology frontier even in a poor R&D environment. In this case, all economies achieve a high growth equilibrium in which only income level differences persist in the long run.R&D, adoption, innovation, growth, development, transitional dynamics

Local classification and examples of an important class of paracontact metric manifolds

    Get PDF
We study paracontact metric (κ,μ)(\kappa,\mu)-spaces with κ=−1\kappa=-1, equivalent to h2=0h^2=0 but not h=0h=0. In particular, we will give an alternative proof of Theorem 3.2 of [11] and present examples of paracontact metric (−1,2)(-1,2)-spaces and (−1,0)(-1,0)-spaces of arbitrary dimension with tensor hh of every possible constant rank. We will also show explicit examples of paracontact metric (−1,μ)(-1, \mu)-spaces with tensor hh of non-constant rank, which were not known to exist until now.Comment: 9 page

Paracontact metric manifolds without a contact metric counterpart

We study non-paraSasakian paracontact metric (κ,μ)(\kappa,\mu)-spaces with κ=−1\kappa=-1 (equivalent to h2=0h^2=0 but h≠0h\neq0). These manifolds, which do not have a contact geometry counterpart, will be classified locally in terms of the rank of hh. We will also give explicit examples of every possible constant rank of hh.Comment: 12 pages; several corrections have been made in this versio

Síndrome de Cowden: a propósito de una familia afectada

    Get PDF
Cowden's syndrome is a rare genodermatosis characterized by multiple hamartomas in several tissues and organs derived from all three embryonic layers. Clinical features of Cowden's disease are explained by the mutation of the PTEN tumour suppressor gene, whose modification leads to an uncoordinated growth of tissues. The importance of this disease lies in the increased susceptibility to malignization of some lesions, specially breast, thyroid and genito-urinary tract lesions. As a result, the disease has been considered a preneoplasic condition. Despite its varied phenotypic expression, this disease is generally unknown. Consequently, many cases are undiagnosed or diagnosis comes at a late stage, what points out the importance of an early diagnosis of the disease so the patient can have periodic check-ups to prevent malignant diseases. A family case is presented here, whose diagnosis was based upon oral clinical findings and which most distinct systemic alteration is the presence of hamartomatous polyps in the digestive tract in several family members

The historical dimension as a guide-tool identification and reading wine landscape character of Mendoza, Argentina

The wine landscape of the province of Mendoza is characterized by an integrating heterogeneity and active, own agricultural production activity dynamism. This is considered as a cultural heritage and a provincial collective redress. This has elements that clarify its nature, understood as the formal manifestation of identity, but others contribute to the trivialization of it. In this context, the research carried out, raised the reflection on how the historical dimension to identify and take a reading of the character of the landscape wine. The historical dimension allows detecting the elements of the character of the landscape and those which are trivializing in a dynamic landscape framework and heterogeneity. In response, resulting from the framework of cultural conservation, it was proposed that the historical dimension of landscape can be used as a guide - tool for analysis.Fil: Manzini Marchesi, Lorena Verónica. Diagonal Multilinear Operators on K\"othe Sequence Spaces

We analyze the interplay between maximal/minimal/adjoint ideals of multilinear operators (between sequence spaces) and their associated K\"othe sequence spaces. We establish relationships with spaces of multipliers and apply these results to describe diagonal multilinear operators from Lorentz sequence spaces. We also define and study some properties of the ideal of (E;p)(E;p)-summing multilinear mappings, a natural extension of the linear ideal of absolutely (E;p)(E;p)-summing operators
