    Biomaterial-mediated factor delivery for spinal cord injury treatment

    Spinal cord injury (SCI) is an injurious process that begins with immediate physical damage to the spinal cord and associated tissues during an acute traumatic event. However, the tissue damage expands in both intensity and volume in the subsequent subacute phase. At this stage, numerous events exacerbate the pathological condition, and therein lies the main cause of post-traumatic neural degeneration, which then ends with the chronic phase. In recent years, therapeutic interventions addressing different neurodegenerative mechanisms have been proposed, but have met with limited success when translated into clinical settings. The underlying reasons for this are that the pathogenesis of SCI is a continued multifactorial disease, and the treatment of only one factor is not sufficient to curb neural degeneration and resulting paralysis. Recent advances have led to the development of biomaterials aiming to promote in situ combinatorial strategies using drugs/biomolecules to achieve a maximized multitarget approach. This review provides an overview of single and combinatorial regenerative-factor-based treatments as well as potential delivery options to treat SCIs

    Child Neurology: A Case Series of Heterogeneous Neuropsychiatric Symptoms and Outcome in Very Early-Onset Narcolepsy Type 1

    Narcolepsy type 1 is a central disorder of hypersomnolence characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy (i.e., sudden loss of muscle tone during wakefulness triggered by emotions), and REM sleep-related manifestations that can present with a peculiar phenotype when arising at a pediatric age. Several features of childhood-onset narcolepsy type 1 are also common in neuropsychiatric conditions; discrete neuropsychiatric comorbidity has also been demonstrated. Here, we report on 3 children with very early narcolepsy type 1. All 3 patients had psychiatric features at the time of symptom onset coupled with peculiar motor disturbances. The course of narcolepsy symptoms also paralleled neuropsychiatric symptoms, suggesting a possible intrinsic link between sleep and psychological features. Multidisciplinary management is mandatory for pediatric narcolepsy type 1 since prompt disease management addressing neuropsychiatric symptoms could lead to better clinical outcomes and quality of life

    Modulation of Gut Microbiota and Neuroprotective Effect of a Yeast‐Enriched Beer

    Beer is the most consumed alcoholic beverage worldwide. It is rich in nutrients, and with its microbial component it could play a role in gut microbiota modulation. Conflicting data are currently available regarding the consequences of alcohol and alcohol‐containing beverages on dementia and age‐associated disorders including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a neurodegeneration characterized by protein aggregation, inflammatory processes and alterations of components of the gut–brain axis. The effects of an unfiltered and unpasteurized craft beer on AD molecular hallmarks, levels of gut hormones and composition of micro/mycobiota were dissected using 3xTg‐AD mice. In addition, to better assess the role of yeasts, beer was enriched with the same Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain used for brewing. The treatment with the yeast‐enriched beer ameliorated cognition and favored the reduction of A(1‐42) and pro‐inflammatory molecules, also contributing to an increase in the concentration of anti‐inflammatory cytokines. A significant improvement in the richness and presence of beneficial taxa in the gut bacterial population of the 3xTg‐AD animals was observed. In addition, the fungal order, Sordariomycetes, associated with gut inflammatory conditions, noticeably decreased with beer treatments. These data demonstrate, for the first time, the beneficial effects of a yeast‐enriched beer on AD signs, suggesting gut microbiota modulation as a mechanism of action

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cardiac tuberculosis is rare and usually manifests as tuberculous pericarditis. Involvement of other part of the heart is unusual and descriptions in the pediatric literature are confined to few case reports regarding mainly myocardial tuberculosis.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We describe a case of pulmonary miliary tuberculosis associated with intracardiac left atrial tuberculoma in an immunocompetent eleven-month-old infant successfully treated with surgery and antituberculous therapy.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Although unusual, involvement of endocardium in disseminated tuberculosis should be kept in mind.</p

    Should I give kids money? The role of pocket money on at-risk behaviors in Italian adolescents

    Background. Discussion on the impact of pocket money on positive behaviors is still debated. Objective. To investigate the effect of diverse money allowance schemes on risky behaviors (smoking, alcohol, binge drinking, drug use, gambling) during adolescence. Method. 989 students aged 15 from Lombardy (Italy) reported information on money availability in the 2018 wave of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study. To analyze the relationship between money availability and risky behaviors we computed odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals through unconditional multiple logistic regression models. Results. Spending more than 10€ weekly was associated with higher likelihood to smoke, binge drink or gamble. Receiving pocket money (rather than receiving money upon request) was related to higher likelihood to engage in risky behaviors. Conclusions. Pocket money may have a negative impact on adolescents, particularly with a substantial amount of money. More research is needed to understand why providing money only if needed may serve as a protective factor against risky behaviors

    Turbulent boundary layer shear flows as an approximation of base surges at Campi Flegrei (Southern Italy)

    Small-volume base-surge deposits of Astroni and Agnano^Monte Spina eruptions at Campi Flegrei consist of sets of beds formed by the passage of multiple pyroclastic density currents. Each set is made by a fining-upward sequence consisting, from base to top,of : (1) an inversely graded layer made of bombs and lapilli; (2) a finely laminated layer with wavy bedforms made of coarse ash and fine lapilli; (3) a structureless fine-ash bed. Lack of discontinuities at layer contacts allows us to hypothesize that each set of beds represents the passage of one pyroclastic density current. The sequence formed as a function of the decreasing particle transportation capability of the base surge during the waxing^sustained^waning phases of flowage. We make the simplifying assumptions that the flow,on passing from the deposition of the inversely graded layer to the deposition of the finely laminated layer,had low particle concentration,was quasi-steady and incompressible. By such assumptions,some of the equations that regulate sediment mechanics are applicable to the base surges of Campi Flegrei to reconstruct flow density and shear velocity in between the deposition of the two layers. Structural and textural features of deposits stress the importance of shear and turbulence during transportation and suggest that the turbulent boundary layer shear flow is a good approximation to such pyroclastic density currents. We used the Coles formula to reconstruct velocity as a function of flow height during the formation of the finely laminated layer of Astroni and Agnano^Monte Spina base surges. The methodology we used allows the reconstruction of flow parameters just at a particular point in time and space of base-surge evolution,and does not provide the complete picture of the flow history of pyroclastic density currents. Nevertheless,flow velocity and density data, as obtained with the proposed approach,point to dynamic pressure values that are compatible with those reported for similar currents on other volcanoes. We conclude therefore that the results obtained give approximate but helpful information on the nature of such hazardous events at Campi Flegrei.Published221-228partially_ope
