    Clues to NaCN formation

    ALMA is providing us essential information on where certain molecules form. Observing where these molecules emission arises from, the physical conditions of the gas, and how this relates with the presence of other species allows us to understand the formation of many species, and to significantly improve our knowledge of the chemistry that occurs in the space. We studied the molecular distribution of NaCN around IRC +10216, a molecule detected previously, but whose origin is not clear. High angular resolution maps allow us to model the abundance distribution of this molecule and check suggested formation paths. We modeled the emission of NaCN assuming local thermal equilibrium (LTE) conditions. These profiles were fitted to azimuthal averaged intensity profiles to obtain an abundance distribution of NaCN. We found that the presence of NaCN seems compatible with the presence of CN, probably as a result of the photodissociation of HCN, in the inner layers of the ejecta of IRC +10216. However, similar as for CH 3 CN, current photochemical models fail to reproduce this CN reservoir. We also found that the abundance peak of NaCN appears at a radius of 3 x 10 15 cm, approximately where the abundance of NaCl, suggested to be the parent species, starts to decay. However, the abundance ratio shows that the NaCl abundance is lower than that obtained for NaCN. We expect that the LTE assumption might result in NaCN abundances higher than the real ones. Updated photochemical models, collisional rates, and reaction rates are essential to determine the possible paths of the NaCN formation.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures.     Through the magnifying glass: ALMA acute viewing of the intricate nebular architecture of OH231.8+4.2

    We present continuum and molecular line emission ALMA observations of OH 231.8+4.2, a well studied bipolar nebula around an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star. The high angular resolution (~0.2-0.3 arcsec) and sensitivity of our ALMA maps provide the most detailed and accurate description of the overall nebular structure and kinematics of this object to date. We have identified a number of outflow components previously unknown. Species studied in this work include 12CO, 13CO, CS, SO, SO2, OCS, SiO, SiS, H3O+, Na37Cl, and CH3OH. The molecules Na37Cl and CH3OH are first detections in OH 231.8+4.2, with CH3OH being also a first detection in an AGB star. Our ALMA maps bring to light the totally unexpected position of the mass-losing AGB star (QX Pup) relative to the large-scale outflow. QX Pup is enshrouded within a compact (<60 AU) parcel of dust and gas (clump S) in expansion (V~5-7 km/s) that is displaced by 0.6arcsec to the south of the dense equatorial region (or waist) where the bipolar lobes join. Our SiO maps disclose a compact bipolar outflow that emerges from QX Pup's vicinity. This outflow is oriented similarly to the large-scale nebula but the expansion velocities are about ten times lower (~35 km/s). We deduce short kinematical ages for the SiO outflow, ranging from ~50-80 yr, in regions within ~150 AU, to ~400-500 yr at the lobe tips (~3500 AU). Adjacent to the SiO outflow, we identify a small-scale hourglass-shaped structure (mini-hourglass) that is probably made of compressed ambient material formed as the SiO outflow penetrates the dense, central regions of the nebula. The lobes and the equatorial waist of the mini-hourglass are both radially expanding with a constant velocity gradient. The mini-waist is characterized by extremely low velocities, down to ~1 km/s at ~150 AU, which tentatively suggest the presence of a stable structure. (abridged

    Discovery of SiCSi in IRC+10216: A missing link between gas and dust carriers of SiC bonds

    We report the discovery in space of a disilicon species, SiCSi, from observations between 80 and 350 GHz with the IRAM 30m radio telescope. Owing to the close coordination between laboratory experiments and astrophysics, 112 lines have now been detected in the carbon-rich star CWLeo. The derived frequencies yield improved rotational and centrifugal distortion constants up to sixth order. From the line profiles and interferometric maps with the Submillimeter Array, the bulk of the SiCSi emis- sion arises from a region of 6 arcseconds in radius. The derived abundance is comparable to that of SiC2. As expected from chemical equilibrium calculations, SiCSi and SiC2 are the most abundant species harboring a SiC bond in the dust formation zone and certainly both play a key role in the formation of SiC dust grains.Comment: To be published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters; Accepted May 6 201

    Infrared Fluorescent Imaging as a Potent Tool for In Vitro, Ex Vivo and In Vivo Models of Visceral Leishmaniasis

    Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is hypoendemic in the Mediterranean region, where it is caused by the protozoan Leishmania infantum. An effective vaccine for humans is not yet available and the severe side-effects of the drugs in clinical use, linked to the parenteral administration route of most of them, are significant concerns of the current leishmanicidal medicines. New drugs are desperately needed to treat VL and phenotype-based High Throughput Screenings (HTS) appear to be suitable to achieve this goal in the coming years. We generated two infrared fluorescent L. infantum strains, which stably overexpress the IFP 1.4 and iRFP reporter genes and performed comparative studies of their biophotonic properties at both promastigote and amastigote stages. To improve the fluorescence emission of the selected reporter in intracellular amastigotes, we engineered distinct constructs by introducing regulatory sequences of differentially-expressed genes (A2, AMASTIN and HSP70 II). The final strain that carries the iRFP gene under the control of the L. infantum HSP70 II downstream region (DSR), was employed to perform a phenotypic screening of a collection of small molecules by using ex vivo splenocytes from infrared-infected BALB/c mice. In order to further investigate the usefulness of this infrared strain, we monitored an in vivo infection by imaging BALB/c mice in a time-course study of 20 weeks. The near-infrared fluorescent L. infantum strain represents an important step forward in bioimaging research of VL, providing a robust model of phenotypic screening suitable for HTS of small molecule collections in the mammalian parasite stage. Additionally, HSP70 II+L. infantum strain permitted for the first time to monitor an in vivo infection of VL.     Modulación de la expresión de la L-selectina por agentes quimiotácticos y GM-CSF

    L-selectin is an adhesion molecule with constitutive expression located on the membrane of granulocytes, monocytes and lymphocytes. It is involved in the early stages of migration of these cells toward either the sites of inflammation or lymphoid tissues. After the cells are activated, Lselectin is down-regulated with shedding of a soluble fragment. Flow cytometry was used to measure L-selectin expression levels on the granulocyte surface, after incubation with a phorbol esther (PMA), two chemotactic factors (fMLP and LTB4) and a cytokine (GM-CSF). Under basal conditions, the expression of L-selectin was found in a high percentage (95.0 ± 0.7) of granulocytes; PMA stimulation led to a marked decrease in expression (3.2 ± 0.6). Chemotactic factors also led to a significant decrease in L-selectin expression (69.9 ± 5.0 for LTB4, and 53.70 ± 4.3 for fMLP), whereas the incubation with GM-CSF produced no significant changes (89.1 ± 4.8). When all the conditions were compared, the PMA effect was significantly higher than those observed with other stimuli; furthermore, the expression upon incubation with fMLP and LTB4 was statistically significant. These results suggest that the level of activation reached by granulocytes is directly related to their capacity for shedding L-selectin from the cell surface, and that these levels are lowered after the stimulation by chemotactic factors. GM-CSF activates several important functions of granulocyte cells, however it does not induce L-selectin shedding.La L-selectina es una molécula de adhesión que se expresa constitutivamente en la membrana de los granulocitos, monocitos y linfocitos, células en las cuales interviene en los procesos iniciales de migración hacia los sitios de inflamación y órganos linfoides. Una vez que dichas células son activadas, la L-selectina experimenta un proceso de regulación negativa con la liberación de un fragmento soluble. Con el objetivo de analizar el efecto de algunos agentes quimiotácticos fisiológicos y un estimulante artificial sobre la expresión de la L-selectina en la superficie de los granulocitos de sangre periférica, se evaluó ésta por citometría de flujo en leucocitos no estimulados y luego de su incubación con un éster de forbol (PMA), dos agentes quimiotácticos (fMLP y LTB4) y una citocina (GM-CSF). En condiciones basales, la expresión de la L-selectina se encontró en un porcentaje alto (95,03 ± 0,67); la estimulación con PMA indujo una disminución notable en la expresión de esta molécula (3,16 ± 0,63). Los factores quimiotácticos llevaron también a una reducción significativa (69,89 ± 4,96 para LTB4 y 53,70 ± 4,30 para fMLP), mientras que la incubación con GM-CSF no produjo cambios significativos con respecto a la expresión basal (89,08 ± 4,81). Al comparar las diferentes condiciones de estimulación entre ellas, se observó que el efecto del PMA fue significativamente mayor que los demás estímulos; además, cuando se comparó la reducción de la expresión generada por el fMLP y el LTB4 también se encontró que entre ellas existía una diferencia estadísticamente significativa. Estos resultados sugieren que el grado de activación alcanzado por los granulocitos se relaciona directamente con la capacidad para liberar la L-selectina desde su superficie, siendo ésta menos intensa después de la acción de estímulos fisiológicos como los agentes quimiotácticos; si bien el GM-CSF activa funciones importantes en la fisiología de los granulocitos, no induce la pérdida de la L-selectina desde la membrana celular

    Multimorbidity patterns in hospitalized older patients: Associations among chronic diseases and geriatric syndromes

    Background/Objectives The clinical status of older individuals with multimorbidity can be further complicated by concomitant geriatric syndromes. This study explores multimorbidity patterns, encompassing both chronic diseases and geriatric syndromes, in geriatric patients attended in an acute hospital setting. Design Retrospective observational study. Setting Unit of Social and Clinical Assessment (UVSS), Miguel Servet University Hospital (HUMS), Zaragoza (Spain). Year, 2011. Participants A total of 924 hospitalized patients aged 65 years or older. Measurements Data on patients'' clinical, functional, cognitive and social statuses were gathered through comprehensive geriatric assessments. To identify diseases and/or geriatric syndromes that cluster into patterns, an exploratory factor analysis was applied, stratifying by sex. The factors can be interpreted as multimorbidity patterns, i.e., diseases non-randomly associated with each other within the study population. The resulting patterns were clinically assessed by several physicians. Results The mean age of the study population was 82.1 years (SD 7.2). Multimorbidity burden was lower in men under 80 years, but increased in those over 80. Immobility, urinary incontinence, hypertension, falls, dementia, cognitive decline, diabetes and arrhythmia were among the 10 most frequent health problems in both sexes, with prevalence rates above 20%. Four multimorbidity patterns were identified that were present in both sexes: Cardiovascular, Induced Dependency, Falls and Osteoarticular. The number of conditions comprising these patterns was similar in men and women. Conclusion The existence of specific multimorbidity patterns in geriatric patients, such as the Induced Dependency and Falls patterns, may facilitate the early detection of vulnerability to stressors, thus helping to avoid negative health outcomes such as functional disability

    The Maser-emitting Structure and Time Variability of the SiS Lines J =14-13 and 15-14 in IRC+10216

Olofsson, eds.AGB stars are important contributors of processed matter to the ISM. However, the physical and chemical mechanisms involved in its ejection are still poorly known. This process is expected to have remarkable effects in the innermost envelope, where the dust grains are formed, the gas is accelerated, the chemistry is active, and the radiative excitation becomes important. A good tracer of this region in C-rich stars is SiS, an abundant refractory molecule that can display maser lines, very sensitive to changes in the physical conditions. We present high angular resolution interferometer observations (HPBW â‰30.″.25) of the v = 0 J = 14-13 and 15-14 SiS maser lines towards the archetypal AGB star IRC+10216, carried out with CARMA and ALMA to explore the inner 1> region around the central star.
