Examining the Role of CtEG using Drosophila

    Get PDF
This project focused on creating viable drosophila models that could be used to evaluate and understand the significance of the N-tarp portion in the effector genes of Chlamydia Trachomatis. During our project we performed multiple DNA clean ups, PCR\u27s, gel electrophoresis, double digestions, and DNA ligations. In this we learned not only the methodological importance within these laboratory techniques but that a great deal of learning occurs in being able to evaluate and analyze ways to troubleshoot when intended results from an experiment are not observed.https://stars.library.ucf.edu/hip-2023fall/1045/thumbnail.jp

    Get PDF
Background: nonoperative treatment (TNO) is suggested in blunt abdominal trauma in stable patients without necessarily addressing surgical trauma injuries. Among the tools used, it has highlighted the angioembolization as a method of stopping bleeding or potentially bleeding lesions. The existence of more than one lesion may be possible to treat this way. Objectives: to show the experience of a hospital emergency department in the use of angioembolization in nonoperative management of more than one injured abdominal organ. Demonstrate utility of simultaneous angioembolization of more than one vascular territory or organ in the management of patients with blunt abdominal trauma who start a nonoperative treatmeant. Design: Retrospective observational study Methods: Between 2007 and 2014, patients with blunt abdominal trauma and active hemorrhage or potentially bleeding lesions demonstrated by computed tomography (CT) were evaluated. Those who underwent nonoperative treatment and embolized were included. Of these, those with more than one organ or vascular territory embolized were described. Results: 392 patients were admitted with blunt abdominal trauma. Of these, 281 (72 %) started TNO protocol. 225 with active bleeding on CT were found. 183 patients (80 %) underwent angiography and 166 need embolization. In 7 cases embolization of more than one organ or vascular territory was performed. Conclusion: angioembolization of organ with active bleeding is definitely accepted practice in trauma centers. The opportunity and need for more than one organ embolization or vascular territory is scarce, but it is doable when adjusted to existing protocols, respecting especially hemodynamic stabilit

In this research work, an analysis of the environmental impact on food production in the State of Mexico was carried out. The main foods produced and the impact of the main factors of environmental pollution produced by them are analyzed. A bibliographic review was carried out with scientific publications between the years 2012 and 2022. The database of the Agrifood and Fisheries Information System (SIAP) was also obtained. In the investigation it was found that in general, the productive chain of beef is the one that generates the greatest contamination when comparing its weight in food compared to other foods of animal and vegetable origin. However, due to the high production of corn in the State of Mexico, its impact is greater than beef in some contamination factors. This work opens the opportunity for projects or enterprises to be generated that improve the conditions of environmental impact in food production, and is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which makes it appropriate for the needs of the time

A political ecology of green territorialization: frontier expansion and conservation in the Colombian Amazon

    Get PDF
After decades of civil war, the Colombian government has recently declared the Amazon as a model region for green growth and low carbon development. The Amazon Vision programme, launched by the Colombian government in 2016, seeks to contribute to forest conservation, climate mitigation, poverty reduction and peace building. The Amazon Vision fundamentally reframes the Colombian Amazon from a ‘narco frontier’ that needs to be liberated from guerrilla influence, organized crime and peasants destroying forests for coca cultivation, to a net CO2 sink with enormous potential for green growth and poverty reduction. Drawing on historical and empirical qualitative research in Guaviare and complemented by a quantitative land cover classification, this article builds on the concept of ‘green territoriality’ to investigate the extent to which the shift towards conservation affects property rights and the ability of indigenous groups and peasants to access land and natural resources. We illustrate how the reframing of peasants from protagonists of development and frontier expansion to villains, and of indigenous communities from underdeveloped forest dwellers to environmental guardians, has created land conflicts and affected the legitimacy of their respective property rights. In both cases, the Amazon Vision strengthens conservation policies and challenges existing land rights but also creates new windows of opportunity for the land claims of indigenous communities while reinforcing conceptualizations of social differentiation among dwellers of the Amazon

    Get PDF

Multimodal Communication in a Noisy Environment: A Case Study of the Bornean Rock Frog Staurois parvus

High background noise is an impediment to signal detection and perception. We report the use of multiple solutions to improve signal perception in the acoustic and visual modality by the Bornean rock frog, Staurois parvus. We discovered that vocal communication was not impaired by continuous abiotic background noise characterised by fast-flowing water. Males modified amplitude, pitch, repetition rate and duration of notes within their advertisement call. The difference in sound pressure between advertisement calls and background noise at the call dominant frequency of 5578 Hz was 8 dB, a difference sufficient for receiver detection. In addition, males used several visual signals to communicate with conspecifics with foot flagging and foot flashing being the most common and conspicuous visual displays, followed by arm waving, upright posture, crouching, and an open-mouth display. We used acoustic playback experiments to test the efficacy-based alerting signal hypothesis of multimodal communication. In support of the alerting hypothesis, we found that acoustic signals and foot flagging are functionally linked with advertisement calling preceding foot flagging. We conclude that S. parvus has solved the problem of continuous broadband low-frequency noise by both modifying its advertisement call in multiple ways and by using numerous visual signals. This is the first example of a frog using multiple acoustic and visual solutions to communicate in an environment characterised by continuous noise
