Indexación: Scopus.Advances in the generation of suitable thermosensitive hydrogels for the delivery of cells in neural tissue engineering demonstrate a delicate relationship between physical properties and capabilities to promote cell proliferation and differentiation. To improve the properties of these materials, it is possible to add liposomes for the controlled release of bioactive elements, which in turn can affect the physical and biological properties of the hydrogels. In the present investigation, different hydrogels based on Pluronic F127 have been formulated with the incorporation of chitosan and two types of liposomes of two different sizes. The rheological and thermal properties and their relation with the neurite proliferation and growth of the PC12 cell line were evaluated. Our results show that the incorporation of liposomes modifies the properties of the hydrogels dependent on the concentration of chitosan and the lipid type in the liposomes, which directly affect the capabilities of the hydrogels to promote the viability and differentiation of PC12 cells. © 2017 by the authors.http://www.mdpi.com/1996-1944/10/10/112

Conflicts of Interest: The authors declare no conflict of interest. The wide tissue distribution of the adrenergic β3 receptor makes it a potential target for the treatment of multiple pathologies such as diabetes, obesity, depression, overactive bladder (OAB), and cancer. Currently, there is only one drug on the market, mirabegron, approved for the treatment of OAB. In the present study, we have carried out an extensive structure-activity relationship analysis of a series of 41 aryloxypropanolamine compounds based on three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR) techniques. This is the first combined comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) and comparative molecular similarity index analysis (CoMSIA) study in a series of selective aryloxypropanolamines displaying anti-diabetes and anti-obesity pharmacological profiles. The best CoMFA and CoMSIA models presented values of r2 ncv = 0.993 and 0.984 and values of r2 test = 0.865 and 0.918, respectively. The results obtained were subjected to extensive external validation (q2, r2, r2 m, etc.) and a final series of compounds was designed and their biological activity was predicted (best pEC50 = 8.561). © 2018 by the authors.https://www.mdpi.com/1420-3049/23/5/119

White-tailed deer S96 prion protein does not support stable in vitro propagation of most common CWD strains

PrPC variation at residue 96 (G/S) plays an important role in the epidemiology of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in exposed white-tailed deer populations. In vivo studies have demonstrated the protective effect of serine at codon 96, which hinders the propagation of common CWD strains when expressed in homozygosis and increases the survival period of S96/wt heterozygous deer after challenge with CWD. Previous in vitro studies of the transmission barrier suggested that following a single amplification step, wt and S96 PrPC were equally susceptible to misfolding when seeded with various CWD prions. When we performed serial prion amplification in vitro using S96-PrPC, we observed a reduction in the efficiency of propagation with the Wisc-1 or CWD2 strains, suggesting these strains cannot stably template their conformations on this PrPC once the primary sequence has changed after the first round of replication. Our data shows the S96-PrPC polymorphism is detrimental to prion conversion of some CWD strains. These data suggests that deer homozygous for S96-PrPC may not sustain prion transmission as compared to a deer expressing G96-PrPC

Chronic wasting disease: a cervid prion infection looming to spillover

The spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD) during the last six decades has resulted in cervid populations of North America where CWD has become enzootic. This insidious disease has also been reported in wild and captive cervids from other continents, threatening ecosystems, livestock and public health. These CWD “hot zones” are particularly complex given the interplay between cervid PRNP genetics, the infection biology, the strain diversity of infectious prions and the long-term environmental persistence of infectivity, which hinder eradication efforts. Here, we review different aspects of CWD including transmission mechanisms, pathogenesis, epidemiology and assessment of interspecies infection. Further understanding of these aspects could help identify “control points” that could help reduce exposure for humans and livestock and decrease CWD spread between cervids

Determinantes del precio de la vivienda nueva No VIS en Medellín: un modelo estructural

    Get PDF
We employ a multi-equation structural model of the housing market to analyze the determinants of the price of new housing in Medellin during 2009-2014. The model includes observed variables and unobserved variables, such as costs that are not included in the housing cost index but that still affect prices. In the analysis we employ an industrial organization framework to examine the interaction between microeconomic and macroeconomic variables. The results indicate that employment, economic growth, and public policies (subsidies) affect real housing prices positively, while inflation affects real prices negatively. In addition to the variables typically included in the analysis in prior research, we include several determinants of housing supply, including construction costs, and two market interest rates

Obtention of Antimicrobial Fibers Type Core/Shell PLA/PVOH-LAE by Coaxial Electrospinning

Coaxial electrospinning (EC) is a technology that allows the encapsulation of active compounds, as ethyl lauroyl arginate (LAE), in shell/core structures, in order to develop new antimicrobial food packaging materials with slowdown of active compound´s release with the purpose of extending food shelf life. For this reason, the objective of this study consisted in developing antimicrobial fibers shell/core type by EC. Two polymers with different hydrophilic character as poly (lactic acid) (PLA) to the shell and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) and LAE to the core were used to obtain PLA/PVOH-LAE fibers, and slowdown the release of antimicrobial compound. The morphology of fibers was evaluated by optical microscopy and the thermal properties through thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). Release studies were carried out in fatty (ETOH 95%) food simulant and was compared with the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of LAE against Listeria innnocua. The optical micrographs evidenced the obtention of shell/core structure with an average diameter of 0,6 µm approximately, and the TGA analyses demonstrated the thermal protection of LAE by shell of fibers. Released LAE reached the equilibrium state in ETOH 95% during the first 3 hours, maintaining a higher concentration than MIC value obtained in L. innnocua (10 ppm). The results demonstrate that new packaging materials with antimicrobial activity as PLA/PVOH-LAE polymeric fibers with shell/core structure can be obtained through coaxial electrospinning technique. Keywords: coaxial electrospinning, ethyl lauroyl arginate, fibers, shell/core, food packaging. Exact inflationary solutions

We present a new class of exact inflationary solutions for the evolution of a universe with spatial curvature, filled with a perfect fluid, a scalar field with potential V±(ϕ)=λ(ϕ2±δ2)2V_{\pm}(\phi)=\lambda(\phi^2\pm\delta^2)^2 and a cosmological constant Λ\Lambda. With the V+(ϕ)V_+(\phi) potential and a negative cosmological constant, the scale factor experiments a graceful exit. We give a brief discussion about the physical meaning of the solutions.Comment: 10 pages, revtex file, 6 figures included with epsf. To be published in IJMP-
