Deep Learning Techniques on Object Detection with Application on Vehicle Detection

Τα τελευταία χρόνια, έχουν σημειωθεί σημαντικές βελτιώσεις σε διάφορους τομείς της μηχανικής όρασης, όπως η αναγνώριση και ο εντοπισμός αντικειμένων, τόσο σε ακρίβεια όσο και σε απόδοση. Αυτή η βελτίωση μπορεί να αποδοθεί σε δύο παράγοντες, μεγάλα κατηγοριοποιημένα σύνολα εικόνων όπως το ImageNet που είναι διαθέσιμα τα τελευταία χρόνια, και η άνοδος των Συνελικτικών Νευρωνικών Δικτύων που μπορούν να επωφεληθούν από αυτά τα μεγάλα σύνολα δεδομένων και που έχουν ακρίβεια συγκρίσιμη με αυτήν ανθρώπων σε προβλήματα μηχανικής όρασης. Στην παρούσα εργασία θα υλοποιήσουμε το VGGNet, ένα βαθύ Συνελικτικό Νευρωνικό Δίκτυο που υποβλήθηκε στο ImageNet Challenge 2014. Ειδικότερα, θα χρησιμοποιήσουμε δύο από τις μορφές του, VGG16 και VGG19, για να ανιχνεύσουμε και να παράγουμε πλαίσια οριοθέτησης για οχήματα που βρίσκονται σε εικόνες από CCTV υλικό. Θα περιγράψουμε την διαδικασία εκπαίδευσης των δύο Νευρωνικών Δικτύων, θα συγκρίνουμε δύο διαφορετικές μεθόδους για την παροχή πλαισίων στα δύο δίκτυα, τα Sliding Windows και την Selective Search και θα χρησιμοποιήσουμε δύο διαφορετικούς τρόπους για να δούμε πόσο καλά λειτουργεί το σύστημα ανίχνευσης αντικειμένων μας, ακρίβεια (Accuracy) και mean Average Precision.In recent years, there have been major improvements in computer vision tasks such as image classification and object detection, both in accuracy and performance. This improvement can be attributed to two factors, large labeled image datasets such as ImageNet that have been available for the last few years, and the rise of convolutional neural networks, which can benefit from these datasets, that have a near human level performance in these tasks. In this Thesis, we will implement and use VGGNet, a deep Convolutional Neural Network that was submitted to the ImageNet Challenge 2014. More specifically, we will use two of its variants, VGG16 and VGG19 in order to detect and provide bounding boxes for vehicles found in CCTV footage. For this task, we will go through the training process of the two Neural Networks, compare two different methods for providing Region Proposals to the networks, Sliding Windows and Selective Search, and use two different ways to see how well our object detection system works, Accuracy and mean Average Precision

Earthquakes, large or even moderate, are often followed by secondary phenomena, such as landslides, tsunamis, fires and technological disasters, leading to cascading effects that may, in turn, cause severe repercussions. Before, during and after the occurrence of these events, risk communication, currently evolved to codified legislation, is a crucial factor. Policy selection in the present study is approached by the application of the risk game tree and its formation. The events studied here in view of policy making have occurred both in the historical and the instrumental era, to account for different level of exposure and anthropogenic hazards, in Greece (1894 Atlanti, 1953 Kefallinia series, 2003 and 2015 Lefkas), Italy (1976 Friuli), Japan (2011 Tōhoku) and Slovenia (1917 Brežice). In all case studies the whole disaster management cycle is examined, i.e. mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. Near-Surface Geophysical Characterization of Lithologies in Corfu and Lefkada Towns (Ionian Islands, Greece)

Lefkada and Corfu old towns are located in the western part of Greece, in the Ionian Sea. Their proximity to the Hellenic subduction zone (HSZ) is the reason for their intense seismicity. The main goal of this study was the estimation of the geotechnical characteristics of the subsurface, with the contribution of applied geophysical techniques. Therefore, seismic refraction tomography (SRT) and multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) were applied. A total of thirty-three (33) seismic and geoelectrical profiles were performed in both towns in order to evaluate the geotechnical characteristics of the subsurface formations. Additionally, subsurface resistivity distributions were investigated with the application of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT). Some important elastic moduli were calculated through the combination of estimated seismic wave velocities and laboratory density measurements. The horizontal distribution of seismic velocities and mechanical properties (σ, E, K, G) of Corfu town was illustrated in maps, for the depth of 5 m. The geophysical interpretation also revealed that Lefkada’s subsurface consists of only one compact geological formation, with little or no variation of its geophysical-geotechnical characteristics. Beyond that, the ground type classifications for the two towns were determined according to the European Committee for Standardization Eurocode 8, based on VS30 values

Uremic Versus Idiopathic Restless Legs Syndrome: Impact on Aspects Related to Quality of Life

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) affects both the general population and patients with chronic renal failure. Even though it has been suggested that all forms of RLS share a common pathophysi-ology, not much evidence exists on how RLS of different etiology could affect aspects related to quality of life (QoL). The aim of this study was to investigate whether patients with uremic RLS (uRLS) experience lower QoL, mental health, and sleep quality, compared with their idiopathic RLS (iRLS) counterparts. Fifteen iRLS patients, 26 uRLS patients, and 15 age-matched healthy individuals participated in the study. The RLS diagnosis and severity, the depression levels, the perception of sleep, and perceived health-related QoL levels were assessed through validated questionnaires. Sleep status was not different between the two RLS groups. In contrast, the uRLS patients scored higher in RLS symptoms severity, depression, while they scored lower in QoL levels compared with iRLS patients. QoL levels were significantly lower in both RLS groups compared with healthy individuals. In conclusion, the uRLS patients experienced lower QoL levels and more severe RLS symptoms, compared with the idiopathic group, possibly leading to the observed higher depression symptoms score. Global perspective of familial hypercholesterolaemia: a cross-sectional study from the EAS Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC)

none724siBackground The European Atherosclerosis Society Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC) global registry provides a platform for the global surveillance of familial hypercholesterolaemia through harmonisation and pooling of multinational data. In this study, we aimed to characterise the adult population with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia and described how it is detected and managed globally.Methods Using FHSC global registry data, we did a cross-sectional assessment of adults (aged 18 years or older) with a clinical or genetic diagnosis of probable or definite heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia at the time they were entered into the registries. Data were assessed overall and by WHO regions, sex, and index versus non-index cases.Findings Of the 61 612 individuals in the registry, 42 167 adults (21 999 [53.6%] women) from 56 countries were included in the study. Of these, 31 798 (75.4%) were diagnosed with the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria, and 35 490 (84.2%) were from the WHO region of Europe. Median age of participants at entry in the registry was 46.2 years (IQR 34.3-58.0); median age at diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolaemia was 44.4 years (32.5-56.5), with 40.2% of participants younger than 40 years when diagnosed. Prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors increased progressively with age and varied by WHO region. Prevalence of coronary disease was 17.4% (2.1% for stroke and 5.2% for peripheral artery disease), increasing with concentrations of untreated LDL cholesterol, and was about two times lower in women than in men. Among patients receiving lipid-lowering medications, 16 803 (81.1%) were receiving statins and 3691 (21.2%) were on combination therapy, with greater use of more potent lipid-lowering medication in men than in women. Median LDL cholesterol was 5.43 mmol/L (IQR 4.32-6.72) among patients not taking lipid-lowering medications and 4.23 mmol/L (3.20-5.66) among those taking them. Among patients taking lipid-lowering medications, 2.7% had LDL cholesterol lower than 1.8 mmol/L; the use of combination therapy, particularly with three drugs and with proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 inhibitors, was associated with a higher proportion and greater odds of having LDL cholesterol lower than 1.8 mmol/L. Compared with index cases, patients who were non-index cases were younger, with lower LDL cholesterol and lower prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular diseases (all p<0.001).Interpretation Familial hypercholesterolaemia is diagnosed late. Guideline-recommended LDL cholesterol concentrations are infrequently achieved with single-drug therapy. Cardiovascular risk factors and presence of coronary disease were lower among non-index cases, who were diagnosed earlier. Earlier detection and greater use of combination therapies are required to reduce the global burden of familial hypercholesterolaemia. Copyright (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd.
