Background: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) significantly impact lives of affected individuals and their families. They confront daunting challenges and multiple demands in their daily life, when compared to parents of children with other disabilities or parents of typically developing children. Subjects and methods: Participants completed The Caregiver Needs Survey, the survey intended for parents or primary caregivers of children with a diagnosis of ASD. During the study, 231 parents were interviewed; 167 mothers and 64 fathers. Parents were recruited from the patient database comprised of families from the two largest cities in Serbia. All of them were contacted before the study, either via phone or at the child’s regular check-in visit. Results: Over 90 percent of the parents reported that additional support at schools, home, and improved relationships with service providers are necessary and important. The most important challenges related to care were child’s communication difficulties, social interaction difficulties, and problems with daily living skills. The significant predictors of lower overall satisfaction were parent’s higher education, having a first concern related to problems of the child’s interaction with others or playing alone, and parent frustration with accessing services in the past 12 months. Greater overall satisfaction, on the other hand, was related to having an in-school tutor training or assistance in managing child’s needs or implementing treatments, and having primary care doctor or pediatrician as a source of information on autism. Conclusions: Future efforts to develop ASD-related policies and services should also take the following into consideration: the low level of awareness among caregivers and health care providers about the early signs of autism; disparities in access to services; educational problems and significant levels of dissatisfaction with the overall care and stigma

International audienceHerein we report the modulation of the properties of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (NPs) via various synthetic approaches. Three types of elaborations were compared, one in aqueous media at 25 °C, and the other two at 80 °C in water or in a water–ethanol mixture. For all these methods, an alkoxysilylated two-photon photosensitizer (2PS) was co-condensed with tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), leading to five two-photon-sensitive mesoporous silica (M2PS) NPs. The M2PS NP porous structure could be tuned from radial to worm-like and MCM-41 types of organization. Besides, the 2PS precursor spatial dispersion was found to be highly dependent on both the 2PS initial concentration and the elaboration process. As a result, two-photon properties were modulated by the choice of the synthesis, the best results being found in aqueous media at 25 or 80 °C. Finally, the M2PS NPs were used for in vitro two-photon imaging of cancer cells

Funder: European Society of Intensive Care Medicine; doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100013347Funder: Flemish Society for Critical Care NursesAbstract: Purpose: Intensive care unit (ICU) patients are particularly susceptible to developing pressure injuries. Epidemiologic data is however unavailable. We aimed to provide an international picture of the extent of pressure injuries and factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries in adult ICU patients. Methods: International 1-day point-prevalence study; follow-up for outcome assessment until hospital discharge (maximum 12 weeks). Factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injury and hospital mortality were assessed by generalised linear mixed-effects regression analysis. Results: Data from 13,254 patients in 1117 ICUs (90 countries) revealed 6747 pressure injuries; 3997 (59.2%) were ICU-acquired. Overall prevalence was 26.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 25.9–27.3). ICU-acquired prevalence was 16.2% (95% CI 15.6–16.8). Sacrum (37%) and heels (19.5%) were most affected. Factors independently associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries were older age, male sex, being underweight, emergency surgery, higher Simplified Acute Physiology Score II, Braden score 3 days, comorbidities (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, immunodeficiency), organ support (renal replacement, mechanical ventilation on ICU admission), and being in a low or lower-middle income-economy. Gradually increasing associations with mortality were identified for increasing severity of pressure injury: stage I (odds ratio [OR] 1.5; 95% CI 1.2–1.8), stage II (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.4–1.9), and stage III or worse (OR 2.8; 95% CI 2.3–3.3). Conclusion: Pressure injuries are common in adult ICU patients. ICU-acquired pressure injuries are associated with mainly intrinsic factors and mortality. Optimal care standards, increased awareness, appropriate resource allocation, and further research into optimal prevention are pivotal to tackle this important patient safety threat

How Libraries Make us Believe: Space, Place, and the Academic Library as Truth-Spot

    No full text
This paper considers how the physical spaces of academic libraries actively assert the belief of intellectual pursuit upon users. Taking up Thomas Gieryn’s concept of “truth-spots,” this paper argues that the academic library is particularly effective at encapsulating and expressing this pursuit through its own spatial configurations. Library spaces achieve this through the manipulation of time, spatial gathering and separation, an imposed order, exposure and obfuscation, as well as the library’s unique or standardized configurations. This paper invites us to think about the library’s metaphysicality in terms that connect abstract beliefs to the library’s physical materials and spaces. The purpose of this paper is to identify the subtle, yet powerful, spatial changes occurring in recent efforts to reconfigure academic library spaces. The implications of such a consideration may aid to inform future (re)designs of library spaces

This study assesses the nature of Canada’s rapid research response through term and keyword bibliometric analysis. The following asks: What are the major areas of COVID-19 rapid research output conducted in Canada during the first five and half months of 2020, and how can the results of this analysis inform future accelerated research efforts toward an effective response to infectious disease emergencies? The results suggest that infection prevention, epidemiology, therapeutics, and public health strategies were among the top-producing research areas in Canada during the onset of the pandemic. Moreover, the analysis reflects gaps in the literature addressing diagnostics and vaccine development.

Multifunctional Artschool The idea for project was born from desire to provide more space for young artists and designers in Belgrade. In this particulary moment, there is not enough ateliers and exibition space for students of Academy of applied Arts and Academy of fine Arts and a possibility for them to be able to grow as professionals. The goal was to create a unic artistic space that could be flexible for different type of use. In order to accomplish a freeform building and the highiest point of fle- xibility, the location for this madder is chosen to be in the green area by the river but yet near enough to the existing university buildings...Through a short reaserch of creative process, multifunction, flexibility, organic form, light and view, the idea for the project was futher developed. Giving that art is very free and undefined term but yet it is consi- dered to be an organic living thing, the inspiration for the building appearence inside and outside were water and caves, so the whole object could be considered as being in the spirit of nature. The spaces created inside the building are free form flexible and adapted for different use such as drawing, painting, computerwork, resting, but also for teaching and exibition.6
