Liquid methane gelled with methanol and water reduces rate of nitrogen absorption
Dilution of gelant vapor with inert carrier gas accomplishes gelation. Mixture is injected through heated tube and orifice into liquid methane for immediate condensation within bulk of liquid. Direct dispersion of particles in liquid avoids condensation on walls of vessel and eliminates additional mixing
Rising-plate rheometer
Technique eliminates hazards of handling propellants and permits determination of structure index of gel by remote control. Rheometer weighs cone of propellant gel which remains on a disc that has been slowly pulled out of the gel
Cryogenic gel flow viscometer
Coiled section of tubing measures viscous properties of gelled cryogenic propellants under conditions closely resembling flow in rocket engine systems. Characteristic flow curve provides data necessary for the design of prototype hardware systems using the liquid or gel of interest
Interview with Tobee Chung Vanderwall
Tobee Chung Vanderwall identifies as Chinese, Japanese, and Scottish. Born in Hawaii, she grew up and attended schools in San Francisco, California. She studied biochemistry at a research lab, taught at a middle school, and is now a mother of three children. She became politicized through the Black Lives Matter Movement at the start of the Trump presidency. As someone who learned to sew from her mother, she joined the Auntie Sewing Squad because she saw a need and had the sewing skills to meet the need. During her time in the Squad, Chung Vanderwall played a role in initiating the name change for the Fu mask pattern.https://digitalcommons.csumb.edu/auntiesewing_interviews/1051/thumbnail.jp

Paediatric gastroenterology evaluation of overweight and obese children referred from primary care for suspected non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
BackgroundScreening overweight and obese children for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is recommended by paediatric and endocrinology societies. However, gastroenterology societies have called for more data before making a formal recommendation.AimTo determine whether the detection of suspected NAFLD in overweight and obese children through screening in primary care and referral to paediatric gastroenterology resulted in a correct diagnosis of NAFLD.MethodsInformation generated in the clinical evaluation of 347 children identified with suspected NAFLD through screening in primary care and referral to paediatric gastroenterology was captured prospectively. Diagnostic outcomes were reported. The diagnostic performance of two times the upper limit of normal (ULN) for alanine aminotransferase (ALT) was assessed.ResultsNon-alcoholic fatty liver disease was diagnosed in 55% of children identified by screening and referral. Liver disease other than NAFLD was present in 18% of those referred. Autoimmune hepatitis was the most common alternative diagnosis. Children with NAFLD had significantly (P < 0.05) higher screening ALT (98 ± 95) than children with liver disease other than NAFLD (86 ± 74). Advanced fibrosis was present in 11% of children. For the diagnosis of NAFLD, screening ALT two times the clinical ULN had a sensitivity of 57% and a specificity of 71%.ConclusionsScreening of overweight and obese children in primary care for NAFLD with referral to paediatric gastroenterology has the potential to identify clinically relevant liver pathology. Consensus is needed on how to value the risk and rewards of screening and referral, to identify children with liver disease in the most appropriate manner

Evaluation of communication skills in genetic counseling training programs: A needs assessment
Communication skills are a necessary part of training and education for medical professionals and a key element of genetic counseling practice. These skills include both educating patients and addressing psychosocial needs. Although the types of communication that genetic counselors should master have been expressed in the literature, significantly less is known about effective ways to assess communication skills. This study was designed as a needs assessment to gain an understanding of how communication skills are currently being assessed in genetic counseling programs across the United States and Canada and to evaluate if a new communication assessment tool would be beneficial to these programs. Semi-structured phone interviews were conducted with directors of 14 of the 35 accredited programs and thematic analysis was performed on the notes generated from the interviews. It was discovered that all of the programs assess communication skills in some way, but no program uses the exact same methods. Most of the evaluation methods used in genetic counseling programs are not based on relevant literature or a known theoretical framework. Program directors are mostly interested in the creation of a new assessment tool, which may improve students’ communication skills and assist supervisors in identifying and addressing deficiencies. This study has public health significance because good communication contributes to better patient satisfaction, more teamwork within the medical team, better patient compliance, more cost-effective medicine, and better health in general. Assessing communication skills effectively would better ensure that genetic counselors are competent in the necessary skills when they complete their training
Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA)
Equine viral arteritis (EVA) is a serious viral disease of horses that can affect the respiratory system and/or the reproductive system. Its importance to the U.S. equine industry was highlighted during a 2006 breeding industry outbreak that was associated with venereal spread of the virus in semen. This fact sheet provides background information of EVA, including prevention and control
