    The Design of a new NICU Patient Area: Combining Design for Usability and Design for Emotion

    In the design of medical products both usability and emotional experience are important to be considered. Usability can enhance the work situation of medical staff and ensure patient safety. Emotion related product aspects, on the other hand, influence the recovery pace of patients as well as the work satisfaction of staff. For an optimal medical design both aspects should receive well-balanced attention during the design process. Usability and emotional experience are currently related in literature. However, about the relation between these two aspects in practical design projects little information is available. Therefore we will discuss the exploration of the practical relation between Design for Usability and Design for Emotion in a design process. We explored the relation during concurrent application of both design approaches to the design of a patient area for a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Our aim was not to develop a new design method, but to explore in practice how both design approaches could be addressed concurrently. This paper describes the applied design approach, its strength and weaknesses as well as the design results. Overall, the NICU design case has proven that the concurrent application of Design for Emotion and Design for Usability is feasible in practice and results in a satisfactory design.     Отримано нові результати щодо зв'язків та узагальнень пронормальних підгруп. Зокрема, розглянуто групи, кожна циклічна підгрупа яких є самоспряжено-переставною. Наведено повний опис таких груп в деяких дуже широких класах груп, які містять в собі всі скінченні групи.Получены новые результаты относительно связей и обобщений пронормальных подгрупп. В частности, рассмотрены группы, каждая циклическая подгруппа которых является самосопряженно-переставляемой. Приведено полное описание таких групп в некоторых очень широких классах групп, которые содержат в себе все конечные группы.New results concerning the connections and generalizations of pronormal subgroups are presented. In particular, we studied groups, in which every cyclic subgroup is self-conjugate-permutable.     Design Probes for People with Dementia

    In order to include persons with dementia in the MinD project actively, design probes were developed to provide insight into their perspectives. We applied probes due to their exploratory character and participation through self-documentation. The aim of this paper is to reflect on the design of the probes in relation to the outcomes as a source of inspiration for designers. More specifically, we investigate the openness and tangibility of the probes, and their content relating to the past, the current or the future. The five participants completed the probes to a large extent. The openness of assignments influenced their completion and the resulting value for empathizing and inspiration for designers: More defined assignments led to more sharing of personal and sensitive information than very open ones. While crafty, tangible assignments were filled in more extensively than less tangible ones, the classical writing assignments resulted more often in more introspective and reflective information from participants. Furthermore, participants filled in assignments about past memories more extensively than those relating to future goals

    In 2004 the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) initiated a study of the origin and tectono-metamorphic evolution of greenstone belts and important regional structures in the central Godthåbsfjord region, southern West Greenland (Fig. 1; Hollis et al. 2004). Like other Archaean belts worldwide, these greenstone belts are locally host to gold mineralisation. Their complexity requires a combination of detailed geological mapping, geochemistry, petrographic work and geochronological studies to develop models of their geological setting, evolution and gold mineralisation

    The umbilical cord and cord blood contain stem cells that can be used for regenerative cell therapies such as hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. However, the application of cord blood is hindered by the slow engraftment of the cells and delayed immune reconstitution compared to stem cells of other sources such as bone marrow. This thesis focuses on ways to improve CB application from both the perspective of the patient (i.e. better engraftment) as well as from the cost perspective (i.e. wider applicability). To this aim, we investigated (combinations of) methods for the improvement of CB engraftment in a murine engraftment model for human hematopoietic cells.     Mouse Models for the Study of Viral Hepatitis : (intra)cellular innate immunity

    Liver-residing leukocytes are essential in determining the outcome of infection with hepatitis viruses. Patient studies of liver innate immune cells during chronic viral hepatitis have been performed but are hampered by, amongst others, a lack of baseline data and unknown time of infection. Therefore, animal models are essential for the study of the innate immune response in viral hepatitis. In the studies presented in this thesis, we aimed to better understand the cellular innate immune responses in the liver during lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) clone 13 induced chronic hepatitis, and to establish the human-liver chimeric mice as model for chronic Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections in order to study the intracellular innate immune mechanisms upon HEV infection. In chapter 2 and 3, we aimed to unravel how the cellular innate immune system deals with chronic viral infection in the liver using the LCMV infection mouse model. In chapter 2, we described that early after LCMV infection a functional dichotomy is observed for inflammatory monocytes and F4/80high-Kupffer cells with respect to endocytosis, but their activation and cytokine gene expression profiles exhibit a strong resemblance. In addition, inflammatory monocytes exhibit a huge capacity for recruitment to the liver and plasticity dependent on the nature of the inflammatory signal, either viral or sterile. This suggests that inflammatory monocytes play a crucial role in shaping the inflammatory environment in the liver early after infection. In chapter 3, we showed that LCMV induces chronic viral hepatitis with limited intrahepatic cytokine and interferon responses during the chronic infection.     Low-pressure metamorphism during Archaean crustal growth: a low-strain zone in the northern Nagssugtoqidian orogen, West Greenland

    One of the first detailed accounts of Precambrian supracrustal rocks in central West Greenland came from a small group of islands and skerries a few kilometres north-east of Aasiaat (Fig. 1). In 1948, K. Ellitsgaard-Rasmussen spent a few days on the islands and published a metamorphic study of their low-grade greenstones and aluminous clastic rocks (Ellitsgaard-Rasmussen 1954). He observed a striking dissimilarity between these supracrustal rocks and the grey gneisses found in most of the Aasiaat region, although the latter were at that time also assumed to be of supracrustal origin. He furthermore noted that the regional significance of the islands should be pursued, and that the island of Maniitsoq 4 km west of the small islands might hold a key to their interpretation. More than 50 years were to elapse before the islands were surveyed again in July 2003, during field work for the Ikamiut map sheet in the northern Nagssugtoqidian orogen (van Gool et al. 2002). The collision of two Archaean continents during the c. 1850 Ma Nagssugtoqidian orogeny caused intensive structural and thermal reworking at up to granulite facies grade in most of central West Greenland; see Connelly et al. (2000) and van Gool et al. (2002). The small islands north-east of Aasiaat are indeed regionally important, because they document a previously unrecognised low-grade, low-strain domain of presumed Archaean age that has largely escaped the Nagssugtoqidian orogeny, and as predicted by Ellitsgaard-Rasmussen (1954) a clue to their significance was found on Maniitsoq
