    How feedback boosts motivation and play in a brain-training game

    AbstractGames are important vehicles for learning and behavior change as long as players are motivated to continue playing. We study the impact of verbal feedback in stimulating player motivation and future play in a brain-training game. We conducted a 2 (feedback valence: positive vs. negative)×3 (feedback type: descriptive, comparative, evaluative) between-subjects experiment (N=157, 69.4% female, Mage=32.07). After playing a brain-training game and receiving feedback, we tapped players’ need satisfaction, motivation and intention to play the game again. Results demonstrate that evaluative feedback increases, while comparative feedback decreases future game play. Furthermore, negative feedback decreases players’ feeling of competence, but also increases immediate game play. Positive feedback, in contrast, satisfies competence and autonomy needs, thereby boosting intrinsic motivation. Negative feedback thus motivates players to repair poor short-term performances, while positive feedback is more powerful in fostering long-term motivation and play

    This paper reports on the use of a Group Support System (GSS) to explore at a micro level some of the processes manifested when a group is negotiating strategy-processes of social and psychological negotiation. It is based on data from a series of interventions with senior management teams of three operating companies comprising a multi-national organization, and with a joint meeting subsequently involving all of the previous participants. The meetings were concerned with negotiating a new strategy for the global organization. The research involved the analysis of detailed time series data logs that exist as a result of using a GSS that is a reflection of cognitive theory

    Reduced immune reaction prevents immunopathology after challenge with avian influenza virus: A transcriptomics analysis of adjuvanted vaccines

    To gain more insight in underlying mechanisms correlating to protection against avian influenza virus (AIV) infection, we investigated correlates of protection after AIV H9N2 infection and studied the contribution of different adjuvants to a protective response at host transcriptional level. One-day-old chickens were immunised with inactivated H9N2 supplemented with w/o, Al(OH)3, CpG or without adjuvant. Two weeks later, birds were homologously challenged and at 1-4 days post challenge (d.p.c.) trachea and lung were collected. Birds immunised with H9N2+w/o or H9N2+Al(OH)3 were protected against challenge infection and had lower viral RNA expression, less immune related genes induced after challenge, a lower amplitude of change of gene expression and smaller cellular influxes compared to the higher and prolonged gene expression in unprotected birds. We show that a limited number of differentially expressed genes correlates with reduced immune activation and subsequently reduced immunopathology after challenge with AIV

    Extracellular cell stress (heat shock) proteins - immune responses and disease: an overview

    Extracellular cell stress proteins are highly conserved phylogenetically and have been shown to act as powerful signalling agonists and receptors for selected ligands in several different settings. They also act as immunostimulatory ‘danger signals’ for the innate and adaptive immune systems. Other studies have shown that cell stress proteins and the induction of immune reactivity to self-cell stress proteins can attenuate disease processes. Some proteins (e.g. Hsp60, Hsp70, gp96) exhibit both inflammatory and anti-inflammatory properties, depending on the context in which they encounter responding immune cells. The burgeoning literature reporting the presence of stress proteins in a range of biological fluids in healthy individuals/non-diseased settings, the association of extracellular stress protein levels with a plethora of clinical and pathological conditions and the selective expression of a membrane form of Hsp70 on cancer cells now supports the concept that extracellular cell stress proteins are involved in maintaining/regulating organismal homeostasis and in disease processes and phenotype. Cell stress proteins, therefore, form a biologically complex extracellular cell stress protein network having diverse biological, homeostatic and immunomodulatory properties, the understanding of which offers exciting opportunities for delivering novel approaches to predict, identify, diagnose, manage and treat disease

    Iodopentafluorobenzene: Electronic state spectroscopy by high resolution vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption and photoelectron spectroscopy

    The electronic transitions of iodopentafluorobenzene (C6F5I) have been investigated experimentally for the first time by high-resolution photoabsorption spectroscopy in the energy range 3.6 – 10.7 eV. The character of the valence excited states has been discussed taking into account calculations available in the literature. The ionisation energies of the molecule in its electronic ground state have been measured by high-resolution He(I) photoelectron spectroscopy. The energies of the ionic bands are shifted by about 0.5 eV compared to the earliest literature values but they agree with the most recently published measurements. All the spectra presented in this paper represent highest resolution measurements of their kind for iodopentafluorobenzene. The absolute photoabsorption cross sections have been used to model photolysis rates and residence times in the terrestrial atmosphere

    Experimental mathematics on the magnetic susceptibility of the square lattice Ising model

    We calculate very long low- and high-temperature series for the susceptibility χ\chi of the square lattice Ising model as well as very long series for the five-particle contribution χ(5)\chi^{(5)} and six-particle contribution χ(6)\chi^{(6)}. These calculations have been made possible by the use of highly optimized polynomial time modular algorithms and a total of more than 150000 CPU hours on computer clusters. For χ(5)\chi^{(5)} 10000 terms of the series are calculated {\it modulo} a single prime, and have been used to find the linear ODE satisfied by χ(5)\chi^{(5)} {\it modulo} a prime. A diff-Pad\'e analysis of 2000 terms series for χ(5)\chi^{(5)} and χ(6)\chi^{(6)} confirms to a very high degree of confidence previous conjectures about the location and strength of the singularities of the nn-particle components of the susceptibility, up to a small set of ``additional'' singularities. We find the presence of singularities at w=1/2w=1/2 for the linear ODE of χ(5)\chi^{(5)}, and w2=1/8w^2= 1/8 for the ODE of χ(6)\chi^{(6)}, which are {\it not} singularities of the ``physical'' χ(5)\chi^{(5)} and χ(6),\chi^{(6)}, that is to say the series-solutions of the ODE's which are analytic at w=0w =0. Furthermore, analysis of the long series for χ(5)\chi^{(5)} (and χ(6)\chi^{(6)}) combined with the corresponding long series for the full susceptibility χ\chi yields previously conjectured singularities in some χ(n)\chi^{(n)}, n7n \ge 7. We also present a mechanism of resummation of the logarithmic singularities of the χ(n)\chi^{(n)} leading to the known power-law critical behaviour occurring in the full χ\chi, and perform a power spectrum analysis giving strong arguments in favor of the existence of a natural boundary for the full susceptibility χ\chi.Comment: 54 pages, 2 figure

    Building future scenarios using cognitive mapping

    A participatory approach for developing future scenarios through cognitive maps as a visual representation of mental models is presented. Applying long-term future visioning techniques in a workshop setting has traditionally been a significant challenge for construction industry practitioners with a predominantly short-term, project-based approach to day-to-day operational responsibilities. Six future scenario cognitive maps are presented to illustrate the process. The maps were digitised from A1-sized papers using Decision Explorer software. Several key characteristics of the resulting cognitive maps and lessons learnt for the organisation of industry-based workshops are discussed. The main benefits are derived from the interaction between participants during the mapping process whereby future issues and their interconnectivities are discussed. Limitations of the findings and further work are presented

    Heat shock protein expression analysis in canine osteosarcoma reveals HSP60 as a potentially relevant therapeutic target

    Heat shock proteins (HSP) are highly conserved across eukaryotic and prokaryotic species. These proteins play a role in response to cellular stressors, protecting cells from damage and facilitating recovery. In tumor cells, HSPs can have cytoprotective effects and interfere with apoptotic cascades. This study was performed to assess the prognostic and predictive values of the gene expression of HSP family members in canine osteosarcoma (OS) and their potential for targeted therapy. Gene expressions for HSP were assessed using quantitative PCR (qPCR) on 58 snap-frozen primary canine OS tumors and related to clinic-pathological parameters. A significant increased expression of HSP60 was found in relation to shorter overall survival and an osteoblastic phenotype. Therefore, the function of HSP60 was investigated in more detail. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed heterogeneous staining for HSP60 in tumors. The highest immunoreactivity was found in tumors of short surviving dogs. Next HSP expression was shown in a variety of canine and human OS cell lines by qPCR and Western blot. In two highly metastatic cell lines HSP60 expression was silenced using siRNA resulting in decreased cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis in both cell lines. It is concluded that overexpression of HSP60 is associated with a poor prognosis of OS and should be evaluated as a new target for therapy
