    Bounds on gravitational wave backgrounds from large distance clock comparisons

    Our spacetime is filled with gravitational wave backgrounds that constitute a fluctuating environment created by astrophysical and cosmological sources. Bounds on these backgrounds are obtained from cosmological and astrophysical data but also by analysis of ranging and Doppler signals from distant spacecraft. We propose here a new way to set bounds on those backgrounds by performing clock comparisons between a ground clock and a remote spacecraft equipped with an ultra-stable clock, rather than only ranging to an onboard transponder. This technique can then be optimized as a function of the signal to be measured and the dominant noise sources, leading to significant improvements on present bounds in a promising frequency range where different theoretical models are competing. We illustrate our approach using the SAGAS project which aims to fly an ultra stable optical clock in the outer solar system.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, minor amendment

    Local stress sources in Western Europe lithosphere from geoid anomalies

    We propose a method to evaluate the stress generated at the local scale by the spatial variations of the gravitational potential energy (GPE), which is related to inhomogeneous topography and mass distribution in the lithosphere. We show that it is possible to infer these local stress sources from the second spatial derivatives of a geoid height grid, used as a proxy of the GPE. The coherence of the method is validated on a passive margin, the Bay of Biscay. The result is that expected in such a geological configuration, with extensional local stress sources with the maximum horizontal principal stress parallel to the margin and compressive sources with the maximum horizontal principal stress perpendicular to the margin in the continental and oceanic lithosphere, respectively. We apply the method to Western Europe in order to provide a better understanding of the complex spatial variation of the present-day tectonic activity. Our results indicate a stress pattern from the local sources dominated by short-space-wavelength (of the order of a few tens of kilometers) variations in the tectonic style and in the direction of the maximal horizontal principal stress sigma(H). A comparison of the sigma(H) orientations and tectonic style from the local sources with the ones of the World Stress Map (WSM) data set indicates that the local stress sources can be representative of the deviatoric stress state in some regions. Our results explain 71% of the faulting styles for the earthquake fault-plane solutions in the WSM, which is better than the classical compressive NW-SE stress field model. In the central part of the Pyrenees, the agreement between earthquake fault-slip directions and the direction of shear stress from the local sources acting on the associated fault planes is compatible with the extensional stress field evidenced by recent investigations

    Teens’ Self-Efficacy to Deal with Dating Violence as Victim, Perpetrator or Bystander

    Multiple studies have demonstrated that adolescent dating violence is highly prevalent and is associated with internalizing and externalizing problems. A number of prevention initiatives are being implemented in North American high schools. Such initiatives aim to raise awareness among potential victims and offenders, and also among peer bystanders. As teenagers mainly reach out to their peers when experiencing adversity, it is important to address adolescents’ efficacy in dealing with witnessing dating violence or with friends disclosing dating abuse, in addition to increasing their ability to deal with experienced dating violence victimization or perpetration. The aim of this study is to explore adolescents’ self-efficacy to deal with dating violence victimization and perpetration in their relationships and those of their peers. A paper-and-pencil questionnaire was completed by 259 14−18-year-olds in Quebec, Canada. The data allow building insight into adolescents’ confidence to reach out for help or to help others in a situation of dating violence victimization and perpetration. We also considered the impact of gender and dating victimization history. Results suggest that dating violence prevention can build on teens’ self-efficacy to deal with dating violence and offer them tools to do so efficiently

    Clustering transitions in vibro-fluidized magnetized granular materials

    We study the effects of long range interactions on the phases observed in cohesive granular materials. At high vibration amplitudes, a gas of magnetized particles is observed with velocity distributions similar to non-magnetized particles. Below a transition temperature compact clusters are observed to form and coexist with single particles. The cluster growth rate is consistent with a classical nucleation process. However, the temperature of the particles in the clusters is significantly lower than the surrounding gas, indicating a breakdown of equipartition. If the system is quenched to low temperatures, a meta-stable network of connected chains self-assemble due to the anisotropic nature of magnetic interactions between particles.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Influence of electron correlations on ground-state properties of III-V semiconductors

    Lattice constants and bulk moduli of eleven cubic III-V semiconductors are calculated using an ab initio scheme. Correlation contributions of the valence electrons, in particular, are determined using increments for localized bonds and for pairs and triples of such bonds; individual increments, in turn, are evaluated using the coupled cluster approach with single and double excitations. Core-valence correlation is taken into account by means of a core polarization potential. Combining the results at the correlated level with corresponding Hartree-Fock data, we obtain lattice constants which agree with experiment within an average error of -0.2%; bulk moduli are accurate to +4%.     Ca2+-binding protein 2 inhibits Ca2+-channel inactivation in mouse inner hair cells

    Ca2+ channels mediate excitation-secretion coupling and show little inactivation at sensory ribbon synapses, enabling reliable synaptic information transfer during sustained stimulation. Studies of Ca2+-channel complexes in HEK293 cells indicated that Ca2+-binding proteins (CaBPs) antagonize their calmodulin-dependent inactivation. Although human mutations affecting CABP2 were shown to cause hearing impairment, the role of CaBP2 in auditory function and the precise disease mechanism remained enigmatic. Here, we disrupted CaBP2 in mice and showed that CaBP2 is required for sound encoding at inner hair cell synapses, likely by suppressing Ca2+-channel inactivation. We propose that the number of activatable Ca2+ channels at the active zone is reduced when CaBP2 is lacking, as is likely the case with the newly described human CABP2 mutation

    Interactions of anaerobic ammonium oxidizers and sulfide-oxidizing bacteria in a substrate-limited model system mimicking the marine environment

    In nature anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) and denitrification processes convert fixed nitrogen to gaseous nitrogen compounds, which are then released to the atmosphere. While anammox bacteria produce N2 from ammonium and nitrite, in the denitrification process nitrate and nitrite are converted to N2 and the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O). Furthermore, nitrite needed by the anammox bacteria can be supplied by nitrate reduction to nitrite. Consequently, the interplay between nitrogen-transforming microorganisms control the amount of harmless N2 or the greenhouse gas N2O released to the atmosphere. Therefore, it is important to understand the interactions of these microorganisms in the natural environment, where dynamic conditions result in fluctuating substrate concentrations. Here, we studied the interactions between the sulfide-oxidizing denitrifier Sedimenticola selenatireducens and the anammox bacterium Scalindua brodae in a bioreactor mimicking the marine environment by creating sulfide, ammonium and nitrate limitation in distinct operational phases. Through a microbial interaction, Se. selenatireducens reduced nitrate to nitrite, which together with the supplied ammonium was converted to N2 by Sc. Brodae. Using comparative transcriptomics, we determined that Sc. Brodae and Se. selenatireducens had significant responses to ammonium and nitrate limitation, respectively, indicating that the activities of these microorganisms are regulated by different nitrogen compounds
