Gypsy women overcoming social exclusion through education

    Get PDF
Gypsy women are expressing their own analysis of the discrimination they suffer in very different ways. lVith education as one of the most vital resources to overcome social and economic exclusion. The research presented is grounded in the premise that gypsy women are active players in society and their communities, endowed with the ability to transform. The acti ve role of gypsy women is even further reafirmed by reinforcing education for coexistence among men and women, and cultures on the basis of equality and egalitarian dialogue in which each voice is vested with the same value in an aim to reach consensus among all in volved parties. These are educational policies that also take up cultural differences but always from within the framework of equality, not homogeneity: that is from the equality of differences

Arbitrage Pricing Theory (APT) e variáveis macroeconômicas. Um estudo empírico sobre o mercado acionário brasileiro

This paper analyses monthly returns of 10 share portfolios negotiated at Bovespa between 1987 and 1997 in order to test the APT model. Macroeconomic factors were created as sources of common variance of these assets. The factors were statistically significant in explaining the relationship between the asset returns in general; besides, evidence was found in favor of the APT.

Influence of wind speed and ammonia concentration on its evaporation rate from aqueous solution spills

    Get PDF
In the event of an accidental spill of an aqueous solution of ammonia, a toxic cloud can be generated, being the ammonia evaporation rate a key issue. In this communication, new experimental data have been obtained at different initial ammonia concentrations and air speeds. The evolution of the evaporation rate, of the ammonia concentration in the solution and of the solution temperature have been studied. Three phases have been clearly identified in the evaporation process, affected by the ammonia concentration, the evaporation rate and the condensation of water. A simple model has also been proposed, based on previous ones from the literature and now including the condensation of water. The proposed model has been compared with experimental data. Although some scattering has been found, it still proves itself useful at predicting the source term in the event of an accidental spill.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Imidazolium based gemini amphiphiles derived from L-valine. Structural elements and surfactant properties

    Get PDF
Imidazolium amphiphiles often display excellent surfactants properties, while amide functionalities and chirality can implement self-assembly. The introduction of these functionalities in imidazolium gemini amphiphiles is expected to allow tuning their aggregation, achieving a higher emulsifying capacity of interest for practical applications. L-valine-derived gemini surfactants have been prepared and their aggregation investigated using NMR, UV-CD, fluorescence, LS or microscopy. The imidazolium gemini amphiphiles synthetized, presented excellent surfactant properties. The aromatic substitution pattern defines additional geometric constrains facilitating a fine tune of their properties, displaying the para-substituted compound best properties. This can be associated to facilitating the required conformational organization of polar and apolar fragments, while reducing coulombic repulsions between imizadolium rings. Two critical aggregation concentrations (CACs) were observed by fluorescence in aqueous media, with the formation of well-defined vesicles in the second step. Dynamic equilibria between aggregates of different sizes seem to be present. These gemini surfactants revealed of interest as emulsifiers for oil/water systems and for controlled fragrance delivery using (R)-limonene as a benchmark volatile compound. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V.

Open chain pseudopeptides as hydrogelators with reversible and dynamic responsiveness to pH, temperature and sonication as vehicles for controlled drug delivery

    Get PDF
A new family of open chain-pseudopeptidic compounds displaying a pendant carboxylic group have been prepared with excellent yields. Their self-assembly has been studied under different conditions and in different media. Some of the compounds obtained have revealed to act as very efficient hydrogelators at low concentrations (CGC 1 mg mL−1). The resulting hydrogels show some interesting properties, including a high thermal stability, with the hydrogels maintaining their structure at temperatures above 65 °C, and their reversible dynamic sol–gel behavior being responsive to thermal and sonochemical inputs and to changes in the basic/acidic properties of the medium. Preliminary studies for controlled drug delivery have been carried out using a Franz Cell and employing a skin pig membrane, confirming that these Low Molecular Weight Gelators (LMWGs) can be appropriate vehicles for the controlled transdermal delivery of small-molecule drugs.Funding for open access charge: CRUE-Universitat Jaume

Supramolecularly assisted synthesis of chiral tripodal imidazolium compounds

    Get PDF
A strong preference for the formation of tripodal systems over the related monotopic and ditopic compounds is observed for the reaction between tris(halomethyl)benzenes and imidazoles derived from amino acids and containing an amide fragment. This preference allows the formation of the tripodal derivative as the major product even when an equimolar mixture of the tris(halomethyl)benzene and the imidazole is reacted (1 : 1 ratio instead of the stoichiometric 1 : 3 ratio). The reactions were monitored using 1 H NMR spectroscopy and ESI mass spectrometry and kinetically characterized. Computational studies were also performed in order to rationalize the observed preference of the tri-substituted product. The results reveal the existence of well-defined supramolecular interactions between the imidazolium groups and the reacting imidazoles that facilitate the formation of the multitopic systems once the first imidazolium group is formed. Analysis of the different structural components shows that the presence of the amide group from the amino acid moiety is the key structural requirement for such supramolecular assistance to take place. The preorganization of the supramolecular intermediates formed through hydrogen bonding interactions involving amide-NH fragments in imidazoles and bromide anions in imidazolium groups seems to be also present at the corresponding TSs, decreasing the associated energy barriers

[EN] In this paper we discuss an educational research case of study centered on the visualization and ubiquitous access to educational material on multimedia mobile devices. The object of the study is the urban development and improvement project and the design of new street market stalls in Tonalá, Jalisco, Mexico. The educational experiment was conducted in a course of the Master’s Degree in Graphical Processes at the University of Guadalajara. In its evaluation, BLA (Bipolar Laddering Assessment) qualitative surveys, originated in user experience studies, were used as complementary methodologies to the quantitative analysis. After its development, analysis and evaluation, the authors can conclude that these new interactive visualization strategies are proven to motivate students, despite the requirement of a greater dedication time as a result of their complexity and technological novelty[ES] Presentamos un estudio de caso de investigación educativa centrado en la visualización y acceso a contenidos docentes de forma ubicua en dispositivos multimedia móviles.
