    Western Mediterranean climate and environment since Marine Isotope Stage 3: a 50,000-year record from Lake Banyoles, Spain

    We present new stable isotope (δ¹⁸Ocalcite and δ¹³ Ccalcite) and diatom data from a 67-m sediment core (BAN II) from Lake Banyoles, northeastern Spain. We reassessed the chronology of the sequence by correlating stable isotope data with a shorter U-series-dated record from the lake, confirming a sedimentological offset between the two cores and demonstrating that BAN II spans Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 3–1. Through comparison with previous records, the multi-proxy data are used to improve understanding of palaeolimnological dynamics and, by inference, western Mediterranean climate and environmental change during the past ca. 50,000 years. Three main zones, defined by isotope and diatom data, correspond to the MIS. The basal zone (MIS 3) is characterised by fluctuating δ¹⁸Ocalcite and benthic diatom abundance, indicating a high degree of environmental and climate variability, concomitant with large lake-level changes. During the full glacial (MIS 2), relatively constant δ¹⁸Ocalcite and a poorly preserved planktonic-dominated diatom assemblage suggest stability, and intermittently, unusually high lake level. In MIS 1, δ¹⁸Ocalcite and δ¹³Ccalcite initially transition to lower values, recording a pattern of Late Glacial to Holocene change that is similar to other Mediterranean records. This study suggests that Lake Banyoles responds limnologically to changes in the North Atlantic ocean–atmosphere system and provides an important dataset from the Iberian Peninsula, a region in need of longer-term records that can be used to correlate between marine and terrestrial archives, and between the western and eastern Mediterranean

Computer-assisted translation tools (CAT tools) and machine translation (MT) are increasingly important and essential in the training of future translators. The main objective of this article is to analyze the attitudes of students towards translation technologies. Specifically, this work aims to make a first approach to the opinions and attitudes of Chinese students about CAT tools and AT in the Chinese-Spanish combination.En el siglo XXI la traducción y las innovaciones tecnológicas son ya inseparables.     En este artículo se describe el curso en línea masivo y abierto (MOOC) “¡Iníciate a la Traducción e Interpretación en los Servicios Públicos!” de la Universidad de Alcalá, el primer curso sobre iniciación a la Traducción e Interpretación en los Servicios Públicos (TISP) en España, así como los resultados de calidad obtenidos hasta este momento a través de encuestas de satisfacción considerando la variedad de los perfiles del alumnado. A lo largo de diez semanas y utilizando el español como lengua vehicular, el curso ofrece una aproximación al mundo de la TISP y pretende contribuir a la difusión de información sobre esta profesión emergente entre profesionales y usuarios de distintos sectores en los que la comunicación intercultural se encuentra presente. [This article describes the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC)“Try Public Service Interpreting and Translation!” taught at the University of Alcalá, the first course on introduction to Public Service Interpreting and Translation (PSIT) in Spain, as well as the results obtained up to now from quality surveys considering the variety of students’ profiles who attended it. The course, in Spanish, offers a general overview of the world of PSIT over a period of ten weeks. It aims to contribute to the dissemination of information about this emerging profession among professionals and users of different sectors who need specific knowledge on intercultural communication.

    This article explores, from a critical point of view, if the current training given to court interpreters and translators in Spain is sufficient in preparing them to do an adequate job in the courtroom and presents the opinions of legal professionals who work with interpreters and translators on a daily basis. We aim to present a new perspective, one that has not been sufficiently covered in existing curricula: that of the users of courtroom interpreting and translation services. Data comes from personal interviews and an anonymous survey of judicial legal professionals to know their views on the work carried out by interpreters and translators as well as their suggestions for improving the quality of the interpreting and translation services. This is a preliminary and partial analysis that requires a deeper study which we hope to undertake in the future.En este artículo analizaremos, desde un punto de vista crítico, si la formación que reciben actualmente en España los intérpretes y traductores judiciales en las universidades españolas es suficiente para desempeñar su trabajo con calidad ante los tribunales, y la confrontaremos con la opinión que tienen los profesionales del Derecho que trabajan habitualmente con intérpretes y traductores.     Late Pleistocene to Holocene palaeoenvironmental variability in the north-west Spanish mountains: insights from a source-to-sink environmental magnetic study of Lake Sanabria

    International audienceWe present a source-to-sink environmental magnetic study of a sediment core from Lake Sanabria (north-west Iberian Peninsula) and rocks of its catchment. The results indicate the occurrence of magnetite, and probably also pyrrhotite, in sediments accumulated between ca. 26 and 13 cal ka BP in a proglacial lake environment. These minerals also appear to dominate the magnetic assemblage of Palaeozoic rocks from the lake catchment. This indicates that sedimentation was then driven by the erosion of glacial flour, which suffered minimal chemical transformation due to a rapid and short routing to the lake. A sharp change in magnetic properties observed in the lake sediments between 13 and 12.6 cal ka BP reflects the rapid retreat of glaciers from the lake catchment. Sediments from the upper half of the studied sequence, accumulated after 12.6 cal ka BP in a lacustrine environment with strong fluvial influence, contain magnetite and smaller amounts of maghemite and greigite. We suggest that greigite grew authigenically under anoxic conditions caused by enhanced accumulation of organic matter into the lake. The occurrence of maghemite in these sediments suggests pedogenic activity in the then deglaciated lake catchment before the erosion and transportation of detrital material into the lake
