    Infinite Factorial Finite State Machine for Blind Multiuser Channel Estimation

    New communication standards need to deal with machine-to-machine communications, in which users may start or stop transmitting at any time in an asynchronous manner. Thus, the number of users is an unknown and time-varying parameter that needs to be accurately estimated in order to properly recover the symbols transmitted by all users in the system. In this paper, we address the problem of joint channel parameter and data estimation in a multiuser communication channel in which the number of transmitters is not known. For that purpose, we develop the infinite factorial finite state machine model, a Bayesian nonparametric model based on the Markov Indian buffet that allows for an unbounded number of transmitters with arbitrary channel length. We propose an inference algorithm that makes use of slice sampling and particle Gibbs with ancestor sampling. Our approach is fully blind as it does not require a prior channel estimation step, prior knowledge of the number of transmitters, or any signaling information. Our experimental results, loosely based on the LTE random access channel, show that the proposed approach can effectively recover the data-generating process for a wide range of scenarios, with varying number of transmitters, number of receivers, constellation order, channel length, and signal-to-noise ratio.Comment: 15 pages, 15 figure

    Core excitation effects in the breakup of halo nuclei

    The role of core excitation in the structure and dynamics of two-body halo nuclei is investigated. We present calculations for the resonant breakup of 11Be on protons at an incident energy of 63.7 MeV/nucleon, where core excitation effects were shown to be important. To describe the reaction, we use a recently developed extension of the DWBA formalism which incorporates these core excitation effects within the no-recoil approximation. The validity of the no-recoil approximation is also examined by comparing with DWBA calculations which take into account core recoil.     Modification of a Brazilian smectite clay with different quaternary ammonium salts

    In this work, a smectite clay from the State of Paraiba, Brazil, was treated with six different types of ammonium salts, which is an usual method to enhance the affinity between the clay and polymer for the preparation of nanocomposites. The clays, before and after modification, were characterized by X ray diffraction. The conformation of the salts within the platelets of the clay depended on the number of long alkyl chains of the salt. The thermal stability of the clays was also studied.     Genetic study of gestation length in andalusian and arabian mares

    The length of gestation in Andalusian, or Spanish Purebred (SPB) and Arabian (AB) mares reared in Spain was analysed, based on 766 spontaneous full-term deliveries appertaining to 141 mares of SPB breed and 72 mares of AB breed in 31 breeding seasons. The data were obtained from the Yeguada Militar de Jerez de la Frontera stud farm in Cadiz, Spain. The mean length of gestation was of 336.8 ´ ± 0.48 days in the SPB mares and 340.3 ± 0.63 days in AB mares. To assess the accurate prediction of time of birth the potential effect of a number of factors was investigated. The influences of the breed, mare, month and year of mating, age of the mother, number of births and sex of the foal were statistically significant. The factor have the greatest influence over the gestation length was the mare itself, with a correlation among consecutive births of around 0.4. The effect of inbreeding, both of the mare and foal, was negligible. Gestation length shortened as the breeding season progressed: in both breeds, a delay of 1 month in mating corresponded to a decrease of 3 days in the gestation length. According to our results, gestation length decrease as the mare gets older, with the shortest gestation periods when the mare is 10–12 years old, and from this point on, it slowly increases. The gestation period shortens as the 4th or 5th birth approaches, and then gets progressively longer. The range of variation in gestation length due to the number of births to the mare is of 2.9 days for the AB mares, and 2.2 days for SPB mares. The heritability for the gestation length for AB and the SPB breeds was 0.2, with a repeatability of 0.36 and 0.37, for SPB and AB breeds, respectively. With the data from both breeds, and using a classical approach, the response to selection was estimated if mares with extreme gestation lengths were culled, i.e. lengths which are under 310 days, or over 360 days. According to our results, in the case of SPB, a decrease of 14–45% would occur in the number of extreme gestation lengths, while in the AB breed, this value would decrease from 2 to 39%

    Applicability of the Peclet number approach to blow-off and flashback limits of common steelworks process gases

    The ever-increasing importance of energy efficiency has given rise to numerous areas of concern for operators and developers of combustion plants; as the need to utilise fuel gases of increasingly poor quality and variability is essential for sustainability, while emission standards continuing to become more stringent. Swirl combustors are ubiquitous in industry owing to their great stability range which occurs due to the formation of a CRZ, which through the recycling of heat and active chemical species to the root of the flame enhances stability over a wide range of operating conditions. Alternative fuels containing hydrogen offer the possibility of reduced greenhouse gas emissions; however flashback is of special concern with hydrogen enriched fuels, owing to the very high flame speed of hydrogen. Many by-products of process and waste industries can include a high proportion of hydrogen, for example Coke Oven Gas. Alternatively, many by-product process gases can contain a high proportion of non-combustible species such as nitrogen and carbon dioxide which can substantially reduce their flame speed and as a consequence increase the possibility of the flame extinguishing through blow-off. This paper examines the blow-off and flashback potential of common steelworks process gases (including one which contains hydrogen) in a compact, premixed swirl burner in swirl number regimes representative of those found in practical systems. Methane is used as a base fuel for comparison. All results are obtained at atmospheric pressure without air preheat. The Peclet number modelling approach incorporating a flame quenching parameter was applied to the results obtained for each of the fuel gases. Using this model, the quench factor value was seen to be dependent on burner configuration as well as fuel composition. It was found that the stable burner operating conditions significantly change from fuel to fuel; with the operating points at which flashback occurs with Coke Oven Gas producing blow-off with weaker process gases such as Blast Furnace Gas and Basic Oxygen Steelmaking gas

    The preburning condition of Chalcolithic cremated human remains from the Perdigoes enclosures (Portugal)

    The Iberian Chalcolithic displayed a remarkable variety of funerary practices, which has been related to interpopulation differences, intrapopulation social-cultural differences, and complex multistage funerary rituals. Perdigoes, a Chalcolithic set of ditched enclosures, reflects such diversity including a wide array of funerary practices. Among those practices is cremation, which, despite relatively rare, is represented in different structures in Perdigoes. One of these structures (Pit 40) presents an unparalleled high minimum number of individuals (n = 240), contrasting with nearby and coeval structures. In this study, we analyse heat-induced bone changes and other archaeothanatological variables to tentatively assess the preburning condition of the human remains. The results of Pit 40 are also compared with other comparable contexts to assess if this unique context presents further funerary differences relative to those other contexts in, for example, body processing. Our results suggest preferential cremation of fleshed human remains, but burning of at least a minority of skeletonised remains and deposition of possibly unburned remains also likely occurred.     Large-angle scattered light measurements for quantum-noise filter cavity design studies

    Optical loss from scattered light could limit the performance of quantum-noise filter cavities being considered for an upgrade to the Advanced LIGO gravitational-wave detectors. This paper describes imaging scatterometer measurements of the large-angle scattered light from two high-quality sample optics, a high reflector and a beam splitter. These optics are each superpolished fused silica substrates with silica:tantala dielectric coatings. They represent the current state-of-the art optical technology for use in filter cavities. We present angle-resolved scatter values and integrate these to estimate the total scatter over the measured angles. We find that the total integrated light scattered into larger angles can be as small as 4 ppm.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure
