Listening to Greater Boston\u27s Climate Change Concerns

    Get PDF
As climate change threatens our communities, it reminds us of the importance of preparing for the future. Cities and towns are trying to understand how climate change will place their citizens at risk. To create resiliency measures and adaptation plans, they will need climate related parameter information. The Greater Boston Research Advisory Group (GBRAG) knew it was necessary to listen to the needs of stakeholders in Greater Boston about the climate parameter information they need to prepare resilient communities. To accomplish this goal, GBRAG held community workshops, collected a survey, and reviewed their Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness reports. These three methods allowed GBRAG to gain a comprehensive understanding of the information needed by the 101 Greater Boston communities. GBRAG also evaluated the inclusive and exclusive language surrounding the participant’s responses. This allowed GBRAG to understand if the outreach produced tones that accounted for all community groups. The engagement methods and their findings were analyzed and critically studied to understand how future engagement processes could be improved. The process of engaging with the public is challenging but ensures that the GBRAG report will hold information that is needed by the public to create adaptive and resilient communities

Economic growth and externalities are rooted in spatial dynamics, however, their spread over space is not unlimited. In this document it is estimated the strength spatial externalities from capital on output and the spatial spillover of the economic growth for Mexican municipalities at different distances. The estimation is carried out implementing a Spatial Durbin Model with distance-based spatial weight matrices in a panel data structure from 1988 to 2013. The results show evidence of weak spatial externalities from capital on output at short distances, say 20 or 60 km. Additionally, it is found that the diffusion of economic growth is directly related to distance, moreover, there is evidence in favor about the convergence hypotheses, finding out that distance between stationary states is insufficient to explain differences among municipalities’ growth rates, but geographical distance matters as well.

    Get PDF

IR-doped ruthenium oxide catalyst for oxygen evolution

    Get PDF
A method for preparing a metal-doped ruthenium oxide material by heating a mixture of a doping metal and a source of ruthenium under an inert atmosphere. In some embodiments, the doping metal is in the form of iridium black or lead powder, and the source of ruthenium is a powdered ruthenium oxide. An iridium-doped or lead-doped ruthenium oxide material can perform as an oxygen evolution catalyst and can be fabricated into electrodes for electrolysis cells

Electrode and interconnect for miniature fuel cells using direct methanol feed

    Get PDF
An improved system for interconnects in a fuel cell. In one embodiment, the membranes are located in parallel with one another, and current flow between them is facilitated by interconnects. In another embodiment, all of the current flow is through the interconnects which are located on the membranes. The interconnects are located between two electrodes

Phase change material thermal power generator

An energy producing device, for example a submersible vehicle for descending or ascending to different depths within water or ocean, is disclosed. The vehicle comprises a temperature-responsive material to which a hydraulic fluid is associated. A pressurized storage compartment stores the fluid as soon as the temperature-responsive material changes density. The storage compartment is connected with a hydraulic motor, and a valve allows fluid passage from the storage compartment to the hydraulic motor. An energy storage component, e.g. a battery, is connected with the hydraulic motor and is charged by the hydraulic motor when the hydraulic fluid passes through the hydraulic motor. Upon passage in the hydraulic motor, the fluid is stored in a further storage compartment and is then sent back to the area of the temperature-responsive material

The Determinants of Income Inequality: The Role of Education

    Get PDF
The economics literature reports mixed evidence on the importance of education as a determinant of income inequality. In this document we shed light on the debate by testing this relationship for a sample of developing and developed countries from 1990 to 2014. We control for country specific characteristics including trade openness, unemployment, foreign direct investment, and the share of elderly population. The results of robust panel data estimations unequivocally find that education is negatively and significantly associated with income inequality.JEL Codes - O1; O15; O5
