    Context Exploitation in Data Fusion

Complex and dynamic environments constitute a challenge for existing tracking algorithms. For this reason, modern solutions are trying to utilize any available information which could help to constrain, improve or explain the measurements. So called Context Information (CI) is understood as information that surrounds an element of interest, whose knowledge may help understanding the (estimated) situation and also in reacting to that situation. However, context discovery and exploitation are still largely unexplored research topics. Until now, the context has been extensively exploited as a parameter in system and measurement models which led to the development of numerous approaches for the linear or non-linear constrained estimation and target tracking. More specifically, the spatial or static context is the most common source of the ambient information, i.e. features, utilized for recursive enhancement of the state variables either in the prediction or the measurement update of the filters. In the case of multiple model estimators, context can not only be related to the state but also to a certain mode of the filter. Common practice for multiple model scenarios is to represent states and context as a joint distribution of Gaussian mixtures. These approaches are commonly referred as the join tracking and classification. Alternatively, the usefulness of context was also demonstrated in aiding the measurement data association. Process of formulating a hypothesis, which assigns a particular measurement to the track, is traditionally governed by the empirical knowledge of the noise characteristics of sensors and operating environment, i.e. probability of detection, false alarm, clutter noise, which can be further enhanced by conditioning on context. We believe that interactions between the environment and the object could be classified into actions, activities and intents, and formed into structured graphs with contextual links translated into arcs. By learning the environment model we will be able to make prediction on the target\u2019s future actions based on its past observation. Probability of target future action could be utilized in the fusion process to adjust tracker confidence on measurements. By incorporating contextual knowledge of the environment, in the form of a likelihood function, in the filter measurement update step, we have been able to reduce uncertainties of the tracking solution and improve the consistency of the track. The promising results demonstrate that the fusion of CI brings a significant performance improvement in comparison to the regular tracking approaches

Magmatic Hydrothermal Alteration and Secondary Post-Shock Features in Martian Olivine-Phyric Basalt Northwest Africa 10416; Petrology and Geochemistry of Primitive Achondrite Northwest Africa 11042

The Martian olivine-phyric basalt Northwest Africa (NWA) 10416 contains large olivine xenocrysts whose cores have been stained brown by hydrothermal alteration and whose rims are composed of pristine olivine overgrowths. Microanalysis of these olivine cores reveals various degrees of amorphization, some of which have been overprinted by terrestrial weathering, evident as part of a weathering rind along the exposed surface of the meteorite. Studies of a completely unweathered terrestrial analogue basalt from southern Colorado reveal similar features and indicate that both basalts were altered in a supersolidus magma chamber setting. The alteration features in NWA 10416 thus imply the presence of significant quantities of magmatic water on Mars and a potentially unique igneous reservoir. Northwest Africa (NWA) 11042 is a primitive achondrite whose O isotopes plot with the L chondrites, but whose petrology resembles that of a cumulate igneous rock. It is heavily shocked and contains high-pressure phases, indicating an origin on a large parent body that underwent sufficient heating to completely melt it, and experienced an impact large enough to create extensive shock-melt pockets. Microanalysis of these melt pockets, trace element geochemistry, and isochron radiometric dating reveal a possible origin deep within the L chondrite parent body where temperatures were sufficient to produce an igneous rock

Never too much—the benefit of talent to team performance in the National Basketball Association: Comment on Swaab, Schaerer, Anicich, Ronay, and Galinsky (2014)

As long ago as the 4th century BCE, Aristotle (~350 BCE/1999) claimed that moderate amounts of qualities, rather than an abundance thereof, are needed for success. Indeed, there are a number of too-much-of-a-good-thing (TMGT) phenomena in psychology in which generally positive traits start to exert negative influence after a certain point (for reviews, see Grant & Schwartz, 2011; Pierce & Aguinis, 2013; for a general framework, see Busse, Mahlendorf, & Bode, 2016). Swaab, Schaerer, Anicich, Ronay, and Galinsky (2014) demonstrated such a phenomenon in team sports: Having more talented team members leads to better team performance up to a certain point, after which talent becomes “too much” and detrimental to performance. This too-much-talent (TMT) effect was present in basketball and soccer, professional team sports with high coordination requirements, presumably because status conflicts among highly skilled members impair coordination in teams. The TMT effect was absent in baseball, in which these requirements are lower. Here, we reexamine the TMT effect in basketball, the only domain in which the TMT effect has been shown,1 using the same data set as in the original study as well as a much larger data set. We demonstrate that Swaab et al.’s evidence of TMT is based on an inappropriate approach to testing the inverse-U-shaped relation. The results demonstrate that the common belief among laypeople (Swaab et al., 2014 Study 1) is actually correct—teams generally benefit from more talented members although the benefits decrease marginally. We did not observe any case in which increased talent was detrimental to team success

The paper discusses the elements of the quest romance in Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (1719), Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels (1726), Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), and Jerome David Salinger's The Catcher in The Rye (1951). It focuses on the novels' male protagonists who embark on an identity quest by distancing themselves from their family and friends and experiencing numerous adventures. The more adventures the protagonist undertakes, the more he learns about himself and the world around him. Yet, towards the end of his journey, he realizes that he does not fit into society and that he must continue with his quest. Accordingly, neither of these characters' quests leads to a closure. The analysis pays attention to both the hero's psychological development and his changed relation to society upon his return. It also interprets Defoe's, Swift's, Twain's, and Salinger's works in terms of social critique as all of them draw attention to important political and social issues of their time. Whereas Defoe and Swift expose the psychology of colonialism, corruption, and dishonesty, Twain and Salinger address racial issues, hypocrisy, and materialism of nineteenth- and twentieth-century American society, respectively. Additionally, the paper discusses the role of gender in shaping the narrative formulas and social implications of the quest genre

In his novel The Great Gatsby (1925) F. Scott Fitzgerald places a great emphasis on the characters’ social status, and the corresponding level of power or weakness it denotes in society. Moreover, the author highlights the issue of the characters’ never-ending quest for wealth, which is seen as the only basis of their lives. At the beginning of the novel, we are introduced to the character of Nick Carraway, the narrator, who comes to East Egg in search for a better job. Nick represents a member of the working class, a common man who has to earn for his living. Thus, the idea of the quest for financial security is stated at the very beginning of the novel. The first chapter also introduces Jay Gatsby, who is described as a well-off, successful man. The character of Jay Gatsby encompasses all types of pursuits; he struggles to obtain a status of a well-to-do person, while at the same time he unsuccessfully searches for joy and his long-lost love. He, as well as Tom and Daisy Buchanan, blindly believe that one’s position in society depends on a person’s wealth. Tom and Daisy Buchanan stand for clear examples of opulent members of higher class, who never seem to have enough money to buy what they truly lack. All in all, the novel deals with money and the consequences it has on people. These are seen through greedy and corrupted people, who always want more. The novel also challenges the question of social class and the distinctions felt between people of different status. The Great Gatsby is all about money, the pursuit of wealth and possessions

Large data and Bayesian modeling—aging curves of NBA players

Researchers interested in changes that occur as people age are faced with a number of methodological problems, starting with the immense time scale they are trying to capture, which renders laboratory experiments useless and longitudinal studies rather rare. Fortunately, some people take part in particular activities and pastimes throughout their lives, and often these activities are systematically recorded. In this study, we use the wealth of data collected by the National Basketball Association to describe the aging curves of elite basketball players. We have developed a new approach rooted in the Bayesian tradition in order to understand the factors behind the development and deterioration of a complex motor skill. The new model uses Bayesian structural modeling to extract two latent factors, those of development and aging. The interaction of these factors provides insight into the rates of development and deterioration of skill over the course of a player’s life. We show, for example, that elite athletes have different levels of decline in the later stages of their career, which is dependent on their skill acquisition phase. The model goes beyond description of the aging function, in that it can accommodate the aging curves of subgroups (e.g., different positions played in the game), as well as other relevant factors (e.g., the number of minutes on court per game) that might play a role in skill changes. The flexibility and general nature of the new model make it a perfect candidate for use across different domains in lifespan psychology
