Off-line data quality monitoring for the GERDA experiment
GERDA is an experiment searching for the neutrinoless {\beta}{\beta} decay of
Ge-76. The experiment uses an array of high-purity germanium detectors,
enriched in Ge-76, directly immersed in liquid argon. GERDA recently started
the physics data taking using eight enriched coaxial detectors. The status of
the experiment has to be closely monitored in order to promptly identify
possible instabilities or problems. The on-line slow control system is
complemented by a regular off-line monitoring of data quality. This ensures
that data are qualified to be used in the physics analysis and allows to reject
data sets which do not meet the minimum quality standards. The off-line data
monitoring is entirely performed within the software framework GELATIO. In
addition, a relational database, complemented by a web-based interface, was
developed to support the off-line monitoring and to automatically provide
information to daily assess data quality. The concept and the performance of
the off-line monitoring tools were tested and validated during the one-year
commissioning phase.Comment: Contribution prepared for the proceeding of the TAUP 2011 conferenc
The MGDO software library for data analysis in Ge neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments
The GERDA and Majorana experiments will search for neutrinoless double-beta
decay of germanium-76 using isotopically enriched high-purity germanium
detectors. Although the experiments differ in conceptual design, they share
many aspects in common, and in particular will employ similar data analysis
techniques. The collaborations are jointly developing a C++ software library,
MGDO, which contains a set of data objects and interfaces to encapsulate, store
and manage physical quantities of interest, such as waveforms and high-purity
germanium detector geometries. These data objects define a common format for
persistent data, whether it is generated by Monte Carlo simulations or an
experimental apparatus, to reduce code duplication and to ease the exchange of
information between detector systems. MGDO also includes general-purpose
analysis tools that can be used for the processing of measured or simulated
digital signals. The MGDO design is based on the Object-Oriented programming
paradigm and is very flexible, allowing for easy extension and customization of
the components. The tools provided by the MGDO libraries are used by both GERDA
and Majorana.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, proceedings for TAUP201

Based on the established essential characteristics and the structure of professional training of students, taking into account the results of the observational experiment, the levels of future preschools’ teachers search and research skills formation of preschool institutions were determined. The methods of scientific research were the analysis of scientific and methodological literature, educational documentation on pedagogical practice, questionnaires of future educators, as well as observation of research activities of students of higher education institutions. Analysis of psychological and pedagogical research, conducting a statement experiment made it possible to establish the features of the structural elements of research activities. The research experiment made it possible to check the level of formation of research skills in students – future educators of preschool education, as well as how they master the motivational-value, content-procedural, research components of professional training, acquire knowledge and research skills. The results of the inspection were carried out in accordance with the developed criteria, indicators and levels of research skills of future educators of preschool educational institutions
GELATIO: a general framework for modular digital analysis of high-purity Ge detector signals
GELATIO is a new software framework for advanced data analysis and digital
signal processing developed for the GERDA neutrinoless double beta decay
experiment. The framework is tailored to handle the full analysis flow of
signals recorded by high purity Ge detectors and photo-multipliers from the
veto counters. It is designed to support a multi-channel modular and flexible
analysis, widely customizable by the user either via human-readable
initialization files or via a graphical interface. The framework organizes the
data into a multi-level structure, from the raw data up to the condensed
analysis parameters, and includes tools and utilities to handle the data stream
between the different levels. GELATIO is implemented in C++. It relies upon
ROOT and its extension TAM, which provides compatibility with PROOF, enabling
the software to run in parallel on clusters of computers or many-core machines.
It was tested on different platforms and benchmarked in several GERDA-related
applications. A stable version is presently available for the GERDA
Collaboration and it is used to provide the reference analysis of the
experiment data.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, submitted to JINS
Measurement of the temperature dependence of pulse lengths in an n-type germanium detector
The temperature dependence of the pulse length was measured for an 18-fold
segmented n-type germanium detector in the temperature range of 77-120 K. The
interactions of 122 keV photons originating from a Europium-152 source were
selected and pulses as observed on the core and segment electrodes were
studied. In both cases, the temperature dependence can be well described by a
Boltzmann-like ansatz.Comment: 17 pages, 2 tables, 13 figures, published in EPJ A
Signal recognition efficiencies of artificial neural-network pulse-shape discrimination in HPGe -decay searches
A pulse-shape discrimination method based on artificial neural networks was
applied to pulses simulated for different background, signal and signal-like
interactions inside a germanium detector. The simulated pulses were used to
investigate variations of efficiencies as a function of used training set. It
is verified that neural networks are well-suited to identify background pulses
in true-coaxial high-purity germanium detectors. The systematic uncertainty on
the signal recognition efficiency derived using signal-like evaluation samples
from calibration measurements is estimated to be 5\%. This uncertainty is due
to differences between signal and calibration samples
The background in the neutrinoless double beta decay experiment GERDA
The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment at the Gran Sasso underground
laboratory (LNGS) of INFN is searching for neutrinoless double beta decay of
76Ge. The signature of the signal is a monoenergetic peak at 2039 keV, the
Q-value of the decay, Q_bb. To avoid bias in the signal search, the present
analysis does not consider all those events, that fall in a 40 keV wide region
centered around Q_bb. The main parameters needed for the neutrinoless double
beta decay analysis are described. A background model was developed to describe
the observed energy spectrum. The model contains several contributions, that
are expected on the basis of material screening or that are established by the
observation of characteristic structures in the energy spectrum. The model
predicts a flat energy spectrum for the blinding window around Q_bb with a
background index ranging from 17.6 to 23.8*10^{-3} counts/(keV kg yr). A part
of the data not considered before has been used to test if the predictions of
the background model are consistent. The observed number of events in this
energy region is consistent with the background model. The background at Q-bb
is dominated by close sources, mainly due to 42K, 214Bi, 228Th, 60Co and alpha
emitting isotopes from the 226Ra decay chain. The individual fractions depend
on the assumed locations of the contaminants. It is shown, that after removal
of the known gamma peaks, the energy spectrum can be fitted in an energy range
of 200 kev around Q_bb with a constant background. This gives a background
index consistent with the full model and uncertainties of the same size
Current state and development prospects of the road and transport infrastructure of Ukraine
The article is devoted to current issues of the state of Ukrainian roads and the importance of repairing and updating road sections. The structure of public highways in Ukraine is analyzed. An analysis of the State target economic program for the development of public highways of state importance for 2018-2022, the purpose of which is the development and restoration of public highways of state importance. The amount of funding for the development and maintenance of public highways by type of work was considered. The innovation of the reform in the field of the road industry carried out in 2018 was studied, in particular, the creation of a single target fund for financing the industry – the State Road Fund, and the sources of its filling were also determined. Funding sources for road infrastructure have been identified. An analysis of the structure of financing of the road and transport infrastructure of Ukraine for 2018-2020 was made, while the trend from the introduction of decentralization of road management was traced. The structure of highways in Ukraine by type of surface was analyzed and conclusions were drawn regarding its modification. The main problems preventing the implementation of the European road management system have been identified. In particular, inadequate funding and ineffective redistribution of available financial capital between the structure of public highways and types of works for their renewal and repair. In addition, the implementation of European standards in the field of road infrastructure is also hindered by the inadequate use of available opportunities and technologies. One of these technologies is an asphalt-concrete mixture loader, which reduces the likelihood of potholes and rutting on roads in the future, as well as the construction of cement-concrete roads, which are practically non-existent in Ukraine, but in the countries of the European Union, their share in the structure is the vast majority
