Social Network Games with Obligatory Product Selection
Recently, Apt and Markakis introduced a model for product adoption in social
networks with multiple products, where the agents, influenced by their
neighbours, can adopt one out of several alternatives (products). To analyze
these networks we introduce social network games in which product adoption is
obligatory.
We show that when the underlying graph is a simple cycle, there is a
polynomial time algorithm allowing us to determine whether the game has a Nash
equilibrium. In contrast, in the arbitrary case this problem is NP-complete. We
also show that the problem of determining whether the game is weakly acyclic is
co-NP hard.
Using these games we analyze various types of paradoxes that can arise in the
considered networks. One of them corresponds to the well-known Braess paradox
in congestion games. In particular, we show that social networks exist with the
property that by adding an additional product to a specific node, the choices
of the nodes will unavoidably evolve in such a way that everybody is strictly

Fiscal policy and lending relationships
This paper studies how fiscal policy affects loan market conditions in the US. First, it conducts a Structural Vector-Autoregression analysis showing that the bank spread responds negatively to an expansionary government spending shock, while lending increases. Second, it illustrates that these results are mimicked by a Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium model where the bank spread is endogenized via the inclusion of a banking sector exploiting lending relationships. Third, it shows that lending relationships represent a friction that generates a financial accelerator effect in the transmission of the fiscal shock
User Interface Design for Electronic Learning Software: Promoting Usability and Facilitating Learning for Children
Computing devices have become ubiquitous in our technologically-advanced world, serving as vehicles for software applications that provide users with a wide array of functions. Among these applications are electronic learning software, which are increasingly being used to educate and evaluate individuals ranging from grade school students to career professionals. This study will evaluate the design and implementation of user interfaces in these pieces of software. Specifically, it will explore how these interfaces can be developed to facilitate the use of electronic learning software by children. In order to do this, research will be performed in the area of human-computer interaction, focusing on cognitive psychology, user interface design, and software development. This information will be analyzed in order to design a user interface that provides an optimal user experience for children. This group will test said interface, as well as existing applications, in order to measure its usability. The objective of this study is to design a user interface that makes electronic learning software more usable for children, facilitating their learning process and increasing their academic performance.
This study will be conducted by using the Adobe Creative Suite to design the user interface and an Integrated Development Environment to implement functionality. These are digital tools that are available on computing devices such as desktop computers, laptops, and smartphones, which will be used for the development of software. By using these tools, I hope to create a user interface for electronic learning software that promotes usability while maintaining functionality. This study will address the increasing complexity of computing software seen today – an issue that has risen due to the progressive implementation of new functionality. This issue is having a detrimental effect on the usability of electronic learning software, increasing the learning curve for targeted users such as children. As we make electronic learning software an integral part of educational programs in our schools, it is important to address this in order to guarantee them a successful learning experience
Zosteric acid and salicylic acid bound to a low density polyethylene surface successfully control bacterial biofilm formation
The active moieties of the anti-biofilm natural compounds zosteric (ZA) and salicylic (SA) acids have
been covalently immobilized on a low density polyethylene (LDPE) surface. The grafting procedure
provided new non-toxic eco-friendly materials (LDPE-CA and LDPE-SA) with anti-biofilm properties
superior to the conventional biocide-based approaches and with features suitable for applications
in challenging fields where the use of antimicrobial agents is limited. Microbiological investigation
proved that LDPE-CA and LDPE-SA: (1) reduced Escherichia coli biofilm biomass by up to 61% with
a mechanism that did not affect bacterial viability; (2) significantly affected biofilm morphology,
decreasing biofilm thickness, roughness, substratum coverage, cell and matrix polysaccharide
bio-volumes by >80% and increasing the surface to bio-volume ratio; (3) made the biofilm more
susceptible to ampicillin and ethanol. Since no molecules were leached from the surface, they
remained constantly effective and below the lethal level; therefore, the risk of inducing resistance
was minimized

The SXI telescope on board EXIST: scientific performances
The SXI telescope is one of the three instruments on board EXIST, a
multiwavelength observatory in charge of performing a global survey of the sky
in hard X-rays searching for Supermassive Black Holes. One of the primary
objectives of EXIST is also to study with unprecedented sensitivity the most
unknown high energy sources in the Universe, like high redshift GRBs, which
will be pointed promptly by the Spacecraft by autonomous trigger based on hard
X-ray localization on board. The recent addition of a soft X-ray telescope to
the EXIST payload complement, with an effective area of ~950 cm2 in the energy
band 0.2-3 keV and extended response up to 10 keV will allow to make broadband
studies from 0.1 to 600 keV. In particular, investigations of the spectra
components and states of AGNs and monitoring of variability of sources, study
of the prompt and afterglow emission of GRBs since the early phases, which will
help to constrain the emission models and finally, help the identification of
sources in the EXIST hard X-ray survey and the characterization of the
transient events detected. SXI will also perform surveys: a scanning survey
with sky coverage of about 2pi and limiting flux of 5x10^{-14}cgs plus other
serendipitous. We give an overview of the SXI scientific performance and also
describe the status of its design emphasizing how it has been derived by the

Convergence of the forward-backward algorithm: beyond the worst-case with the help of geometry
We provide a comprehensive study of the convergence of the forward-backward algorithm under suitable geometric conditions, such as conditioning or Łojasiewicz properties. These geometrical notions are usually local by nature, and may fail to describe the fine geometry of objective
functions relevant in inverse problems and signal processing, that have a nice behaviour on manifolds, or sets open with respect to a weak topology. Motivated by this observation, we revisit those
geometric notions over arbitrary sets. In turn, this allows us to present several new results as well
as collect in a unified view a variety of results scattered in the literature. Our contributions include
the analysis of infinite dimensional convex minimization problems, showing the first Łojasiewicz
inequality for a quadratic function associated to a compact operator, and the derivation of new linear rates for problems arising from inverse problems with low-complexity priors. Our approach
allows to establish unexpected connections between geometry and a priori conditions in inverse
problems, such as source conditions, or restricted isometry properties
